Description

T. W. MOKEEVER. Drum-Cymbal.
No. 224,204. Patented Feb. 3,1880.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
TIMOTHY W. MOKEEVER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
DRUM-CYMBAL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 224,204, dated. February 3, 1880,
Application filed July 7, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Beitknown that I, TIMOTHY W. MOKEEVER, of the city and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Drum-Cymbals, of which the following is a specification.
Cymbals are often carried in a band by the same person that plays one of the drums, in order that the cymbals may be used when the drum is silent. The cymbals are usually carried in a pocket, and inconvenience arises in their use, in consequence of the necessity of laying aside the drum-sticks and taking the cymbals, and the reverse.
My improveinei'it is for the convenience of the musician and for improving the music.
I make use of a cymbal that is connected to the drum so that it is in position for use, and 1 arm the drum-sticks with metal tips, so that the same may be used upon the cymbal or upon the drum.
This improvement allows the drummer to use the cymbal or drum alternately, or at whatever time the music may be appropriate, and when the drum is in use the cymbal attached thereto responds to the corresponding resonant vibrations to increase the volume of the tone of the drum, and when the cymbal is struck the drum becomes a sounding or resonant case to the same, to promote the vibrations.
In the drawings, Figure l is a plan of the drum and the cymbal attached, and Fi 2 is a partial section of the drum and cymbal.
The drum is of any desired size or shape. I have shown the head a, cylinder 1), and hoop c. The cymbal d is .of the proper size and shape, and it is mounted upon an arm, 0, having a clamp, 11, by means of which it is connected with the drum. It is preferable to have a thumb-screw by which the same can be easily clamped to or removed from the drum.
The drum-sticks are preferably of wood, and tipped with metal knobs I, as seen in Fig. 3, the surface of such metal tips being smooth, so as not to injure the drum when used upon the same, and the sticks are adapted to use in striking the cymbal.
I claim as my invention 1. The combination, with the cymbal, of an arm and clamp, substantially as set forth, whereby the same is adapted to be removabl y connected with a drum.
2. The drum-sticks provided with metal tips, substantially as set forth, to adapt the same for use on cymbals as well as the drum, as set forth.
Signed by me this 2d day of July, A. D. 1879.
