My invention relates to vacuum cleaner and more particularly to means for connecting a flexible hose to the vacuum cleaner casing.
In vacuum cleaners of the so-called inside bag type, an inlet opening is usually end and an outlet opening at the other end of the casing. For ordinary cleaning, a flexible hose is connected in the inlet opening. However, it is sometimes desirable to use a blowing action,

An object of my invention is to provide an improved means for facilitating the connection and disconnection of the hose to the inlet and outlet openings.
Another object of my invention is to provide an improved bayonet type locking means for rigidly securing the hose in the inlet and outlet openings. What I consider to be novel and my invention may be better understood by reference to the following specification and appended claims when considered in connection with the accom pany drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the vacuum cleaner casing broken away in part to show the securing means for the flexible hose;

Fig. 3 is an enlarged view of the securing means located in the outlet opening;

Referring to the drawing, I indicates a vacuum cleaner casing provided with a cover II at one end and a housing I2.at the other end, an inlet opening I3 is provided in the cover II and an outlet opening I4 provided in the housing I2. In the normal operation of the vacuum cleane air is drawn in through the inlet opening I3 and exhausted through the outlet opening I4. A flexible hose I is shown in Fig. 1 connected in the inlet opening I3.
When it is-- desired to use the blowing action of the vacuum cleaner, the hose I5 is disconnected from the inlet opening I3 and connected in the outlet opening I4. In Fig. 2, the hose I5 provided at one 5 Between the sectors I1, openings 20 are provided. One ring I6 is secured in the outlet opening I4 1 as by means of a forced fit. Another ring I6 is the flanges 24 and is shown connected in the outlet opening I4.
Secured in the inlet and outlet openings are similar locking rings I6. Rings I6 are provided with three sectors I1 having surfaces I8 inclined upwardly from the two ends toward the center where a radially. extending groove I9 is located.

'Hose I5 is provided with an inner metallic sleeve 2I and an outer metallic sleeve 22. Sleeves 2I and 22 may be secured together beyond the end of hose I5 as by means of welding. Extending over the outer sleeve 22 is a rotatable connecting member 23. An inwardly extending flange 24 of connecting member 23 overlaps an outwardly extending flange 25 of sleeve 22. A ring 26 of resilient material is located between 25. Secured to the outer end of connecting member 23 are three pins 21. Pins 21 are adapted to be inserted in the openings 20 between the sectors I1. By rotating the connecting member 23 in either a clockwise or counter-clockwise direction, the pins 21 are caused to ride up the inclined surfaces l8 to a position seated in the grooves I9.
When the pins 21 are seated in the grooves l9, the flexible hose I5 is locked in position in either the opening I3 or II, as the case may be. For resiliently holding tion, an outwardly extending flange 28 is secured, spaced from the end of connecting member 23 and provided with a U-shaped ring 29 of non-metallic material. Within the ring 29, an annular spring 30 is provided and located to the left of the flange 28, as shown in Fig. 2. Spring 30 is provided with a plurality of outwardly bent elastic fingers 3|. When the hose I5 is secured to the ring I6, ring 29 urged by spring 30 engages the opposite side of ring I6 from the side engaged by the pins 21.
When connecting hose l5 into either the inlet opening I3 or the outlet opening I4, the pins 21 are inserted in the openings 20 between the sectors I1. The spring 30 is compressed and the connecting members 23 rotated in either a clockwise or counter-clockwise direction. The pins 21 ride up the inclined surfaces I8 until the pins reach the grooves IS. The compression of spring 30 is somewhat relaxed but is sufficient to hold the pins 21 in the grooves I9. The spring 30 insures a tight connection between the hose I5 and the vacuum cleaner.
To disconnect the hose l5 from the vacuum cleaner, spring 30 is compressed and then the connecting member 23 rotated slightly around in either a clockwise or counter-clockwise direc tion until the pins 21 register with the openings 20. The hose I5 may then be removed by a longitudinal movement.

1. The combination with a vacuum cleaner casing having an opening and a flexible hose, of means for securing the flexible hose in the opening of the vacuum cleaner casing including a ring having a plurality of spaced sectors, said sectors having transversely extending grooves, said ring being secured in the opening of the casing, outwardly extending pins secured to the end of the hose, and resilient sealing means secured between the hose for holding said pins in engagement with said grooves and forsealing said hose with respect to said casing.
2. The combination with a vacuum cleaner casing having an opening and a flexible hose, of means for securing the hose in the opening of the vacuum cleaner casing including a ring having a plurality of spaced sectors secured in the opening, said sectors having transversely extending grooves, outwardly extending pins secured to the end of the hose, a compressible packing secured around the hose and spaced from the end, and resilient means associated with said compressible packing for resiliently holding the hose in engagement with the vacuum cleaner when the pins are seated in said grooves and for compressing said packing against the exterior of said casing.
3. The combination with a vacuum cleaner casing having an opening of means for detachab ecuring a flexible hose in the opening of a vacuum cleaner casing including a ring secured in said opening having a plurality of sectors with spaces therebetween, said sectors having transverse grooves, a connector rotatably mounted on said hose, outwardly extending pins radially spaced around said connector, a flange secured to said connector spaced from its end and from said pins, a non-metallic U-shaped ring loosely mounted on said flange, and a spring located within said ring abutting the side of said flange addacent to said pins for holding said pins in said grooves and sealing said hose in the opening of said casing.
4. The combination with a vacuum cleaner casing having an opening, of means for detachably securing a flexible hose in the opening including a ring secured in said opening having a plurality of sectors with spaces therebetween, said sectors having transverse grooves, a connector rotatably mounted on said hose, outwardly extending pins radially spaced around said connector, a flange secured to said connector spaced from its end and from said pins, an annular spring having outwardly bent elastic fingers abutting the side of said flange adjacent said pins, and a U-shaped non-metallic ring inclosing said spring and said flange for holding said pins in said grooves and sealing said hose in the opening of said casing.
