UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM H. STEVENS, OF MENDON, MICHIGAN.
THlLL-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 224,113, dated February 3, 1880. Application filed December 20, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. STEVENS, of Mendon, in the county of St. Joseph and State of Michigan, ha"e invented certain new and useful Improvements in Thin-Couplings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it,
of the coupling.
reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in thill-couplings; and it consists in the arrangement and combination of parts, whereby the two parts of the coupling are not only held together by a spring, but prevented from rattliing, as will be more fully described hereina ter.
Figure l is a perspective of the two parts Fig. 2 is a vertical sectio ot the two parts put together.
a represents the part of the coupling which is fastened to the axle, and which consists of a cylinder that is closed at the end' I) and open at the one 0; From the open end 0 there is made a narrow cut, (I, in toward the center of the cylinder, which extends but a short piece, when it runs into an opening, 0, which is about one-fourth as wide as the entire circumference of thecylinder. 0n the front side of this cylinder is made a groove, 9, in which the rear end of the spring 2' catches so as to hold the two parts of the coupling together.
The other part, h, of the coupling forms a part of the plate Z, which is secured to the rear end of the thill n. The rear end of this plate 1 is formed into-the round part 0, which just fits the bore of the cylinder, and to one end of this part is secured a cap, 7', which incloses the open end of the cylinder when the two parts of the coupling are put together. Also, secured to the cap r and plate 1 is a covering-plate, '0, which covers over the opening e in the side of the cylinder after the two parts have been put together and the thills turned downward. While the two parts are together the rear end of the spring 6 catches in the groove 9 in the cylinder and holds the two parts together, so that they cannot be separated until the spring has been pried back, when the thills can be moved sidewise. Before the two parts of the coupling can be separated, however, the tliills must be raised upward until the part as of the plate comes just opposite the out d. The opening 6 in the cylinder allows the part of the coupling on the thill to'turn in the part a sufficiently to give "the thills all of the play that is necessary.
The spring prevents all rattling of the parts at all times.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim In a thill-coupling, the combination of the part aqhaving the groove g, with the thill Z, provided with the cap '0, spring 1', part 0, and cap 4", the parts being arranged to operate as shown. g
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 17th day of December, 1879.
WILLIAM H. STEVENS.
