BUTTON AND STUD.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent no. 224,098, dated February 3, 1880.

Application filed December 17, 1879.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, NATHAN F. MATHEW- SON, of Providence, in the State of Rhode Island, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Buttons and Studs; and I do hereby declare that the following specification, takenin connection with the drawings making a part of the same, is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.

My invention relates to that. class of buttons or studs in which the two parts are separated for the purpose of inserting and removing the samcfrom the garment; and it consists in the improvements hereinafter described.

The sleeve or post E is made with a longitudinal channel, f, and projects beyond the upper surface of the disk (3 and into the space before referred to, when the latter is united to the concave shell or front D.

i To the back B of the button is attached a hollow post, H, provided upon its circumfer ence, near the top, with a nib 0r prong, I, and having within a spiral spring, J projecting beyond the top thereof when not compressed. The post E is also provided atits upper end and above the disk 0 with a notch or slot, K, and is filed down between the latter and the channel f. 1 I

The operation of my invention is as follows: The post H is inserted in the button .or eyelet hole, and the sleeve or hollow post E slipped over the same, the channel f and a corresponding notch in the disk 0 permitting the passageof the nib or prong I.

'With a slight pressure of the thumb and finger the hollow post E slides down upon the post H until the protruding spring J comes in contact with the shell or front D, as shown in Fig. 1. A continued and slightly-increased pressure upon the top of the button compresses the spring J and sends the sleeve or hollow post E down upon the post H and the nib I upon the latter, above that portion of the sleeve or post E which separates the channel f from the notch K.

By holding the top down with sufficient force to retain the compression of the spring the back B is pressed against the person so that the friction prevents it from turning, while the top of the button is turned to the right and the notch K brought beneath the nib I, when the pressure from the top is removed, and the spring J throws down the post H, and the nib I into the notch K, and a positive fastening is thus secured.

When it is desired to remove the button the resistance of the spring is overcome, as before, and the top turned in the opposite direction until the nib l is in a perpendicular line with the channel f, when the pressure is removed and the two parts separated.

The several parts are so constructed and adjusted with reference to each other that the nib [can only pass over that portion of the sleew e or post E which is between the channel f and the notch K, and which has been filed I down for that purpose, it being prevented from going above the flush end of the sleeve or post E by the end of the post H coming in contact with thetop of the button.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Lettegs Patent, is-
