Description

I v W. STAUDE R. Box for Holding Embroidery, &o.
No; 223,958. Patented Jan. 27, 1.880..
irib'lessesf fill 0122b) M Wm ".FEI'ERS. PHOTO-LITHDGRAFHER, WASHINGTON. I10.
UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
WALTER STAUDER, OF ST. G'AiITJ, SWITZERLAND, ASSIGNOR TO THE SWISS EMBROIDERY MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
BOX FOR HOLDING EMBROIDERIES, 80C.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 223,958, dated January 27, 1880.
Application filed December 10, 1879.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WALTER STAUDER, of .St. Gall, Switzerland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxes or Cases for Holding Embroideries and other goods, of which the following is a specification.
My improvements consist in the combination, with a box or case and its cover, of a strap IO or straps made of elastic material, serving to hold the contents of the box or case in place independently of the cover, and serving also to fasten the cover when closed. The strap or straps preferably have the ends secured within the box or case by means allowing of their detachment to facilitate the removal of the contents of the box or case; but the cover may be removed by simply slipping the strap or straps over the end or ends of the cover and box or case without detaching the ends of the strap or straps.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a box or case embodying my improvements, with the case closed and shown in section near one end, the better to exhibit one of the straps; and Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the box with the cover open.
Similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts in both figures.
A designates a box or case, the body of which may be made of card-board or other suitable material, for containing strips of embroidery; Preferably it is so constructed that one end of a strip of embroidery may be passed through transverse slots sin the top of the box and displayed outside the portion of the same and between said slots, and so that the other end of the strip may bev drawn out through an 7 4 end of the box without opening the cover, in
used,) consisting of elastic material, such as strapsof india-rubber covered with a woven orknitted material. These straps pass through holes 66 in the top of the box or case near the sides and ends thereof, and extend across the strip of embroidery folded and laid in the box or case, so as to hold the same in place independently of the cover B,and pass to the outside of the box or case. Their portions outside the box or case, when the cover B is closed, may be slipped over the ends of the box or case across the cover, so as to hold it in place, or, when desirable to release the cover, may be slipped over the ends of the box or case across the top of the box without detaching the ends of the straps, whereupon the cover may be opened without occasioning the release of the strip of embroidery.
The ends of the straps are preferably fastened inside of the box or case by means allowing them to be unfastened to facilitate the removal of the embroidery when desirable. A button, b, on one end of each strap, operating in conjunction with a button hole or loop,
:0, on the other end, may be employed for this purpose. In this way a single continuous strap or straps may serve to hold the contents of a box or case independently of the cover, and may serve the additional purpose of securing the cover in place. This is advantageous, as. the difficulty of fastening 8o straps to the box or case is avoided, and there is a. greater length of strap or straps, when made of elastic material, to act by its resilience in tightly securing the contents of the box or case as they decrease in quality through consumption.
Of course my improvements are applicable to boxes or cases for various goods other than embroideries.
What I claim as my invention, and desire 0 to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with a box or case and its cover, of a strap or straps made of elastic material, serving to hold the contents of the box or case in place independently of the cover, and also to fasten the cover of the box or case when closed, while affording provision for opening the cover by simply slipping the strap or straps over the end or ends of the the box or case when closed, and having the 10 cover and box or case Without detaching the ends inside the box or case secured by means ends of said strap or straps, substantially as allowing of their detachment to facilitate the and for the purpose specified. removal of the contents of the box or case, 5 2. The combination, with a box or case and substantially as specified.
its cover, of a strap or straps made of elastic q W. STAUDER. material, serving to hold the contents of the Witnesses:
.box or case in place independently of the 7 HENRY BRUNNEY,
cover, and serving also to fasten the cover of EDWIN H. BROWN.
