Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ENOCH THOMAS, OF BEVERLY, VIRGINIA.
CAM-PRESS.
Specification of Letters Patent N o. 22,387, dated December 21, 1858.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ENocH THOMAS, of Beverly, Randolph county, Virginia, have invented new and useful improvements in the application of mechanical principles for the various purposes of pressing cotton, hay,
tobacco, brick, coal, cheese, &c., also for books, copying, printing, embossing, &c., and for punching metals.
The nature of my invention consists, in the inode of constructing and arranging the journal boxes, so as easily to vary the space Linder the follower (to receive more or less substance,) and retain the uniform posit-ion of the pressure,-also combining the cam and windlass, cast in one solid piece.
To enable others skilled in the arts to make and use my improved press I will proceed to describe it more fully, reference being had to the accompanying drawings which make a part of this specification, the letters referring to the same parts in the different figures.
Figure l is a plane side elevation. Fier. 2 is an end view, showing the journal box and mode of inserting it-also the hidden parts of the cam and follower in dotted lines.
(A) is the bed piece, or bottom, on which rests the substance to be pressed, to which the upright standards (B, B,) are secured.
These are cast with an opening through,-
notched on the inside to receive the journal boxes, (C, (1,) which'are notched on two sides to iit into the corresponding notches in the slot or opening in the standards (B, B,) in such manner as to hold iirmly against the resisting power, and still are free to slip on their journals, and be moved one or more notches to elevate or lower the concentric cam, so as to accommodate the quantity, or thickness of the substance required.
(D) is the revolving wedge, or concentric cam, upon its axle (d) which may be cast in one solid piece, with flanges (c c c c) projecting over on both sides of the periphery for the purpose of lifting the follower (E) by means of the pieces (e, e,) screwed on to the follower (E) operating on both sides of the cam On each side and cast solid with the cam (D) are wheels (F, F,) with square holes (f, f, f,) like the windlass to insert the end of a lever (G) whereby the power is applied by the hand, or a much greater power is obtained by the concussion of a blow, on the end of the lever, which multiplies the force on the revolving wedge, in proportion as the length of the lever is to the fulcrum.
Having thus fully speciiied, and described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The mode of making and arranging the journal-boxes, so as easily to vary the space under the follower, and retain the uniform position of the pressure,in combination with the cam and windlass, cast solid, when constructed and operated substantially as specified, and for the purposes set forth.
