This invention relates to. new and useful improvements in an adjustable cover for flush tanks.
The invention contemplates the construction of acover for flush tanks which is characterized by abutment members adjustably mounted on the bottom thereof and adapted to extend into the top of a tank and engage the side walls thereof so that the cover is firmly held upon the tank irrespective. of the fact that it is larger than the top dimensions of the tank.
More specifically, the invention proposes to provide the. cover with lugs at its bottom side, and to adjustably mount the abutment members on these lugs in a manner so that they may be adjusted to various positions according to the size of the. tank for which the cover is intended.
Still further the invention proposes to characterize the abutment members by headed bolts slidably mounted on the lugs previously mentioned, and tubular bushings of resilient material mounted on the bolts and adapted to contact the Walls of the tank.
Still further the invention proposes a simple arrangement by which the abutment members may be properly positioned on the cover to fit any particular tank.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

The adjustable cover for flush tanks, in accordence with this invention, comprises a rectangular cover [0 of the usual porcelain material and having a top wall portion Ell and edge flange portions lo on three sides thereof. This is the usual form of the cover of a flush tank, such as for the tank I I illustrated in Fig. 1. A plurality of abutment members 12 are adjustably mounted on the bottom of the cover Ill and are adapted to extend into the top of the tank H and engage the side walls thereof to securely hold the cover in position irrespective of the fact that the cover may be slightly too large for the tank.
Each abutment member l2 includes a tubular bushing l2 of resilient material, such as rubber, supported by a bolt M. The bolts l4 have heads M which are slidably mounted in slots l5 having overhanging edges l5. These slots 15 are formed in lugs IS on the sides of the cover I0. These lugs I6 project from thickened portions Ill extended around the three sides of the top Wall lll of the cover Ill. These thickened portions 0 are immediately adjacent the edge flanges It. A nut ll threadedly engages on the outer end of each bolt l4, and abuts the ends of the tubular bushings w The slots 15% are arranged at right angles to the sides of the cover "I.
The cover, in accordance with this invention, is used as follows:
The nuts I! are loosened and the abutment members I2 are shifted in the slots. l5 until the sides of the abutment members strike the inner faces of the side walls of the tank II, as illustrated in Fig. 6. The abutment members l2 may be properly positioned by trial, that is, it is necessary to lift the cover l0 off the tank several times and shift the abutment members l2 to new positions until they reach the correct positions. Then the nuts I1 are turned tight to lock the bolts M in stationary positions. Once the correct adjustment of the abutment members l2 has been attained it is not necessary to change it any more, except in the event that the tubular bushings 12 shrink or deteriorate.
In Figs. 7 and 8 a modified form of the invention has been disclosed which distinguishes from the prior form in the fact that means has been provided for assisting in properly locating the abutment members I2 in positions to abut the inner faces of the side Walls of the tank H. In accordance with this form of the invention the head I4 of each bolt is provided with roughened or serrated faces I l engaging serrations I 5 extended along the overhanging portions l5 of the slots IS. A leaf spring I9 is mounted on each bolt head I l and acts against the bases of the slots l5 and serves to urge the serrations I 4 and I5 into contact with each other. A passage 20 is formed through the flanges m of the cover adjacent each slot I5. These passages terminate in the edges Ill of the flanges ID A cord or wire 2| is threaded through each passage 20, and through apertures I4 formed in the bolt heads [4. The ends Zi of the cords or wires 2| are knotted.
In other respects this form of the invention is similar to the prior form and like parts are indicated by like reference numerals,
The adjustable cover, in accordance with this form of the invention, is used as follows:
The nuts I! are loosened and the abutment members I2 are shifted to the free ends of the slots IS. The cover H1 is then placed on the tank H. The strings or wires 2| are pulled so as to move the abutment members l2 firmly against the inner faces of the side walls of the tank H. The cover I0 is then removed and the nuts- I 1 are tightly screwed down to hold the members l2 in their new positions. The strings or wires 2| are then removed. The cover is now used in the conventional manner.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
1. An adjustable cover ,for flush tanks, comprising a cover for flush tanks, and abutment members adjustably mounted on the bottom of said cover and adapted to extend into the top of a tank and engage the side walls thereof, and comprising bolts slidably mounted on said cover, resilient tubular bushings on said bolts, and means for locking said bolts in fixed positions.
2. An adjustable cover for flush tanks, comprising a cover for flush tanks, and abutment members adjustably mounted on the bottom of said cover and adapted to extend into the top of a tank and engage the side Walls thereof, said abutment members comprising bolts having their heads slidably engaged in slots provided with overhanging edges, tubular bushings mounted on said bolts, and nuts threadedly engaged on the bolts and abutting the tubular bushings, and when turned tight adapted to force the heads of the bolts against the edges of the overhanging portions of said slots.
3. An adjustable ,cover for flush tanks, comprising a cover for flush tanks, and abutment members adjustably mounted on the bottom of said cover and adapted to extend into the top of a tankv and engage the side walls thereof, said abutment members comprising bolts having their heads slidably engaged in slots provided with overhanging edges, tubular bushings mounted on said bolts, and nuts threadedly engaged on the bolts and abutting the tubular bushings, and when turned tight adapted to force the heads of the bolts against the edges of the overhanging portions of said slots, said slots being formed in lugs arranged on the portions extended along the sides of said cover.
4. An adjustable cover for flush tanks, comprising a cover for flush tanks, and abutment members adjustably mounted on the bottom of said cover and adapted to extend into the top of a tank and engage the side walls thereof, said abutment members comprising bolts having their heads slidably engaged in slots provided with overhanging edges, tubular bushings mounted on said bolts, and nuts threadedly engaged on the bolts and abutting the tubular bushings, and when turned tight adapted to force the heads of the bolts against the edges of the overhanging portions of said slots, the contacting faces of said bolts and overhanging portions of the slots being provided with inter-engaging serrated portions, resilient means urging said serrations into engagement with each other, and flange elements connected with said bolts and extending through passages into said cover to points where they may be pulled to move the bolts along said slots.
