Description

5 Claims.
This invention relates to containers and has reference more particularly to that type of con-I tainer which employs a sealing strip or ring to fasten the cover to the container body and one of the objects of this invention is to reenforce the container at the joint between the cover and the container body whereby the joint may remain leakproof despite any shocks and jars against the joint. Sealing rings of the type employed for fastening the cover to the container body are usually of inverted U shape in cross section and desirably have curled edges, one of which is clenched underneath the usual false wire edge at the open top of the container body so as to lock the parts together, and one difficulty, which has been encountered heretofore in connection with this type of sealing ring, is that of removing the ring for the purpose of opening the container-Q and one of the objects of this invention is to provide simple and efiicient means as a part of;
the ring whereby the latter may be easily and quickly removed without the use of a hammer. pliers or other heavy tools.
With these and other objects and advantages in view, this invention consists in the severaly novel features of construction, arrangement and} combination of parts hereinafter fully set forth and claimed.
One embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the drawing accompanying this specification, in which:

Referring to said drawing, which is illustrativ of one embodiment of the invention, the refer ence character In designates a fragment of a: container body of conventional form desirably; but not necessarily formed with an outstanding? annular bead H adjacent its upper end, .above which is a neck l2 which terminates in a fals ternal side of the neck l2 of the container. Ex-
tending up from. the margin of the cover is an annular flange H which is arched outwardly at its upper extremity to provide an annular flange or rim l8 overlying the wire edge iii of the container body and adapted to receive a flexible gasket l9 between the rim and false wire.
The locking ring 20 is desirably composed of a metal strip rolled into tubular form and struck up with suitable dies to form an inverted U shaped ring, the side members 2| and 22 of which terminate in curled edges 23, 24 (see Fig. 5). Instead of the curled edges, the edge portions may be doubled upon themselves and flattened down to provide smooth edges, whereby the seal ring may be handled without danger of cutting ones hands. The strip is of sufiicient length to overlie the rim [8 of the cover with the ends telescoping each other as is seen in Figs. 1 and 5.
To fasten a cover upon a container body, the sealing ring is placed upon the rim l8 of the cover with the curled edge 23 seated in the annular depression [6 of the cover, and downward pressure is then applied to the ring to tightly compress the gasket l9, after which the edge portion 24 of the outer side member 22 of the ring is bent under and up against the false wire l3 of the container body, thereby locking the cover to the container body and providing a leakproof joint.
The curled edge 23 being seated in the annular depression of the cover, it is protected against deformation and a more rigid structure is provided at the joint whereby any shocks or jars against the joint is resisted by the rigid structure, thereby preventing any of the parts from becoming deformed and preventing any leak at the joint.
To facilitate the removal of the ring when opening the container, a slot 25 is formed in the inner side member 2| of that part of the ring which is located adjacent the telescoped ends and is disposed outside the inner part thereof, and below the slot the curled edge 23 is flattened slightly and offset laterally and outwardly from the interior of the ring as is shown at 26 to provide a loop of double thickness.
To remove the ring, the point of a small screwdriver or other small pointed tool, illustrated in dotted lines at 21, is inserted down through the slot 25 and is brought into engagement with the rear face of the loop 26, as is indicated by the dotted lines 21 in Fig. 3. The tool is then swung in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 3 using the upper face of the ring as a fulcrum and the loop 26 and adjacent parts of the curled edge 23 are then pried out of the annular depression [6 in the cover and at the same time part of the curled edge 23 of the outer ring part is drawn out of the curled edge 23 of the inner telescoped end of the ring. Fig. 4 shows the parts after the tool 21 has been swung down beyond a horizontal plane. The tool is then withdrawn and inserted through the slot 25 from the opposite side, as seen at 21 and by swinging the tool in the direction of the arrow andusing the upper side of the ring as a fulcrum, the telescoped ends of the ring are pulled apart, thereby permitting the workman to grasp the outer previously telescoped end part of the ring and pull it off the cover and false wire.
It is to be understood that the ring is com-,
posed of light gauge metal which permits it to yield and be readily pulled off the cover and container body.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
' 1. In a container, a container body formed with an outwardly flanged rim, a cover therefor having an upstanding marginal flange formed with an outwardly flanged. rim overlying the flanged rim of the container body, and a ring having an inverted, substantially U shaped cross section and straddling the cover flange, the outer side member of the ring being clenched under and against the flanged rim of the container body and the inner side member of the ring having a laterally offset part at its edge portion and a slot adjacent said offset part, through which slot a tool may be introduced and engaged with the rear face of the offset part of the edge portion of the inner side member of the ring, the U-bend of the ring acting as a fulcrum for the tool in prying up the adjacent part of the inner member of the ring.
2. In a container, a container body formed with an outstanding flanged rim, a cover therefor having an upstanding marginal flange formed with an outwardly flanged rim overlying the flanged rim of the container body, and a split ring, the ends of which are telescoped, said'ring having an inverted, substantially U shaped cross section and straddling the cover flange, the two side members of the ring being formed with curled edges, the outer side member being clenched under and against'the flanged rim of the container body and the inner curled edge being flattened and offset outwardly from the interior of the ring at a place adjacent one of the ring ends to provide a double thickness loop, and there being a slot in said side memberextending upward from the flattened and offset loop, whereby a screwdriver or other tool may be inserted through the slot into engagement with tainer.

3. In a container, a container body formed with an outwardly flanged rim, a cover therefor having an annular depression, and having a marginal upstanding flange formed with an outstanding flanged rim overlying the flanged rim of the container body,.and a splitring, the ends of which aretelescoped, said ring having an inverted, substantially U shaped cross section, the side members of which are formed with curled edges, the outer curled edge being clenched under the flanged rim of the container body, and the inner curled edge being seated in said annular depression in the cover and having an offset flattened part'at a place adjacent one of the ring ends to provide a double thickness loop, and there being a slot in said side member of the ring extending upwardfrom the loop whereby a tool may be inserted through the slot and into engagement with the rear face of the loop for the purpose set forth. 1
4a In a container, a container body formed with a false wire at its open upper end, a cover therefor having an upstanding marginal flange formed with an outwardly flanged rim overlying the false wire of the. container body, and a split ring, the ends of which are telescoped, said ring having an inverted, substantially U shaped cross section, the two side members of which are formed with curled-edges; the outerside member being clenched under and against the false wire, and the curled edge adjacent one end of the ring being flattened and offset laterally, there being a slot in the inner side member immediately above the offset, flattened curled edge thereof, located adjacent the telescoped ends of the ring, whereby a tool may beinserted through the slot and behind the curled edge therebelow, the upper side of said ring acting as a fulcrum for the tool in prying apart the telescoped ends of the ring.
5. In a container, a container body having a false wire edge at its open top, a cover having a disclike-.- body portion and an upstanding annular flange fitting into the open top of the container and terminating in an outstanding rim overlying the false wire of the container body, and there being an annular depression in the cover between the body portion and upstanding flange, and a sealing ring of substantially inverted U shape in cross section formed with curled edges, one fit ting in and being seated in the annular depression of :the cover and the other curled edge being clenched under the false wire of the con- ANTONIO GIAMMANCO.
