ANTISKID ATTACHMENT FOR SHOES Filed July 25, 1940 ATTORNEY.
Patented Apr. 8, 1941 UNITED STATES FATE @FFHQ 2 Claims.
This invention relates to antiskid attachments for shoes. One object is to provide a readily attachable and detachable device for applying to shoes and the soles thereof, with spikes or calks for preventing slipping, and with means for adjusting the device to shoes of different sizes.
Another object is to provide in a device of the kind described, a flexible sole plate with calks set therein, adjustable means for engaging the toe of the shoe over the top thereof, an adjustable clamp for engaging the sole of the shoe forwardly of the heel, and adjustable connections between the sole plate and the sole clam-p.
A preferred embodiment of the invention is shown in the drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the lower part of a shoe, showing my improved anti-skid attachment mounted thereon.
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the attachment removed from the shoe and the toe-flaps opened out.
Figure 3 is a detail in elevation on the line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is an enlarged detail on the line 5--'5 of Figure 2. I
The invention comprises a flexible sole plate 5 of leather or other suitable material, having a plurality of spikes or calks 6 firmly anchored therein in any conventional manner as by passing the heads of the calks through washers l at the upper and lower sides of the sole plate and spreading the ends, with the lower ends of the rivets left protruded at the under side as shown at 6a. A broad toe strap 8 is secured by its medial portion to the upper side of the toe of the sole plate,
by passing the upper ends of the rivets therethrough and seating the upper washers thereover before upsetting the ends of the rivets. The strap 8 includes side flaps 8a pierced along its margins by eyelets 9 firmly set therein, The arrangement and fitting are such that these flaps may be closely folded up over the toe B of the shoe A, and secured thereover by a lace II], as shown in Figure 1, thus holding the toe of the device firmly in place and preventing its slipping rearwardly.
The sole plate 5 is formed with an integral tongue 5a extended medially rearward and reinforced on its upper side by a metallic strip I I having its forward end clamped beneath the upper washer 1 of a rearmost rivet 6. A series of aligned adjustment holes Ila are pierced along through this strip l and underlying tongue 5a..
A metallic, adjustable sole clamp 12 is provided, and includes a medial tongue l3 for disposal beneath the longitudinal axis of the shoe sole C and pierced with a pair of aligned adjustment holes ltd. A short bolt Hi passed through either of the holes Ida and Ha detachably locks the tongue E3 to the strip ll and enables adjustment of the elements as will be later referred to. From the rear end of the tongue I3 there is laterally extended a flat lug I 5 formed with a sole engaging claw H3 at its extremity. The inner end of this lug overlaps inwardly the end of the tongue I3 and is turned down as shown at ll for engaging the threaded end of a clamp screw It. A short claw l9 complemental to the claw I6 is provided and is pivotally pinned at 20 to an angular footpiece 2 I, the down-turned web of which is tapped as at 2m for passing the screw I8. The claws l5 and i9 are thus adapted to engage the shoe sole C at either side, to which the claws are clamped by turning up the screw it with a screw driver. The pivotal mounting of the tongue H3 at Hi, and of the claw [9 enables the claws It and It to automatically adjust themselves to the curvature of the edge of the soleat point of contact. The device may be lengthened or shortened to fit various sizes of shoes, by means of the adjustment holes Ha, Ma, and the bolt M.
From the description given, it is thought that the construction and use of the device will be fully understood, and the described structural features may be modified within the scope of the claims.
I claim:
1. In a device of the kind described, a flexible sole plate having a tongue extended rearwardly, a reinforcement strip on the tongue, both the tongue and strip being pierced by a series of adjustment holes, a sole clamp including laterally arranged claws for engaging the sole of a shoe, means for closing the claws upon the sole and a forwardly extending tongue overlying the rearwardly extending tongue of the soleplate, said tongue being pierced with holes for alignment with the holes of the sole plate, and a bolt passed through such aligned holes.
2. In a structure as defined in claim 1, means at the toe portion of the sole plate for releasably engaging the toe of a shoe.
