Description
March 18, 1941. D, MATALA VISE FOR PIPE THREADING MACHINES Filed Jan. 2, 1940 Inuenior fiametm'asliazam (wwmfr Aiiomews Patented Mar. 18, 1941 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
The present invention relates to a vise for pipethreading machines of a type disclosed in the Landis Patent No. 948,888 and has for its primary object to provide a yieldable mounting for the vise on its support in order to insure the perfect cutting of the threads on the pipe under circumstances when the pipe is not perfectly straight. In the usual construction of a vise of this character the same is mounted on a support in an unyielding position with respect to the pipethreading machine and is adjusted relative thereto by means of set screws. Accordingly, unless the pipe is perfectly straight, a perfect cutting of the threads will not occur, and it is accordingly an object of the present invention to avoid the cutting of imperfect threads by providing a yieldable mounting for the vise on its support.
A further object is to provide a device of this character of simple and practical construction, 20 which embodies slight changes in the construction of the device and which is otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the de- 25 tails of construction as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which- 30 Figure 1 is a top plan View.
Figure 2 is a side elevational View with parts of the support broken away, and
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view taken substantially on a line 33 of Figure 2. d5 Referring now to the drawing in detail, the numeral 5 designates the upstanding edge of the supporting carriage for the vise and the numeral 6 designates the adjustable support for the work holding jaws 1. Horizontal and vertical adjust- 40 ment between the jaw supports 6 and the supporting carriage 5 is accomplished by means of set screws 8 and 9. The jaw supports 6 are adjustably mounted on the upright portion of the carriage support 5 by means of set screws II] which project through holes H in the carriage which are larger than the set screws and are threaded into the jaw supports 6 as more clearly shown in Figure 3 of the drawing. Accordingly the play provided by the large opening I I permits the vertical and horizontal adjustment of the jaw support 6 on the supporting carriage.
Mounted on the set screw [0 is a coil spring l2, the spring being compressed between the adjacent sides of the carriage bar by means of the head I3 of the set screw and accordingly, instead of the rigid connection which has heretofore been provided between the carriage 5 and the jaw support 6 the coil spring [2 will permit a yielding movement between such parts to compensate for any irregularity which might occur in the pipe while the same is held by the jaws during the threading action.
It is believed the details of construction, advantages and manner of use of the device will be readily understood from the foregoing without further detailed explanation.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is- In a vise of the class described, a supporting carriage, jaw supports, work holding jaws in said supports, said carriage having openings therein, set screws carried by the jaw supports loosely mounted in said openings, coil springs mounted on said set screws adapted to provide yieldable supports between the carriage and the jaw supports, and independent means for effecting horizontal and. vertical adjustment between said jaw supports and the carriage.
DEMETRIUS MATALA.
