1 Claim.
Our invention relates to the application of an emulsion substance upon the paper surface and more particularly to devices and special apparatus which are used for automatically treating the paper surface or a portion thereof with said emulsion, so that said paper, after drying, may be used for printing thereon. special designs, pictures or indicia, such as may be found useful in stationery, for personal or individual use, or in printing designs for commercial advertising.
Manifestly, an object of our invention, is to provide a. machine or an apparatus, which may be of simple construction and adapted for semiautomatic operation, said apparatus being adapted for carrying the paper in single sheets, or, in folded or roll form, and allowing it to pass over a suitable emulsion applicator, in form of a roller, which will quickly apply said. emulsion thereon and immediately thereafter eject said paper into a suitable rack, so as to allow the coated surface to be dried, in readiness for print- One of the main objects of our invention is to provide said apparatus or a machine with a set of suitable rollers, which are positioned in a close proximity to each other and running parallel with each other, one of said rollers having a suitable lever member attached to its shaft for controlling its position in relation to the other roller, so that it may be continually or intermittently immersed in a suitable tank member containing said emulsion and therefore causing said roller to apply said substance upon the paper surface, by bearing upon said paper surface against the other roller, also, having a suitable guage associated therewith for controlling thereon the thickness of the applied emulsion application, as in practice may be most desirable.
Another object of our invention is to provide said machine with a set of conically grooved pulleys, having a drive arranged for facilitating the diversified speeds of said machine, also having a pair of said pulleys so arranged and connected to a suitable roller rotation control lever member, whereby in operation, an intermittent action of a short or longer duration may be had, so that the entire paper surface or any desired portion thereof, or any particular spot on the paper surface, may be coated or treated with emulsion for whatever purpose it may be required.
Further object of our invention is to provide said machine with an electrically controlling member, which may be in a form of a solenoid and which, in operation may be so arranged, whereby the application of the emulsion upon (Cl. ill-40) the surface of the paper, may be had at any desired spot or place and in addition thereto, having a suitable feed controlling member, whereby the feed and the speed of the paper passing therethrough may be constantly regulated.
Further objects and advantages of our invention as will hereinafter more fully appear, we attain by the construction herein shown on the drawing and described in the specification, forming a part of our application.
Reference is had to the accompanying" drawing, in which the similar reference characters denote the similar parts.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 shows the plan view of the machine, showing the position of the feed and emulsion. applicating rollers, the application control and the feed pulleys connected to the drive.
Fig. 2 shows the front elevational view of the machine, taken from the Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 shows the diagrammatical View of the machine wiring diagram, and the solenoid con.- trol associated therewith.
Fig. 4 shows the enlarged front elevational view of the switch used in the machine for operating 1 and controlling the solenoid of the machine.
Fig. 5 shows the perspective view of the paper, showing the emulsion applied to its surface.
Fig. 6 shows the transverse cross-sectional view of the paper taken on the line 6-6 of the Fig. 5.
Describing our invention more in detail, in its broader aspect, said invention comprises a suitable frame member, generally designated by numeral 2, which is mounted upon a stand l and having a suitable driving mechanism 6, as shown.
Said frame member 2, comprises a pair of upright members 8 having a cross member IE1 upon which the roller bearings l2 are mounted, and which are for the purpose to hold in place a top roller l4 suspended upon. a shaft it, which is held in engaged position in. the said bearings it.
The inner upright members I8, at the underside of the said cross member I0, are provided with a suitable pivot shaft 20, upon which a pair of levers 22 are pivotally mounted, of which, one end thereof is provided with a roller shaft 2 5 having a spreading roller member 26 positioned thereon, as shown, while the other end of the said lever 22 is provided with a cam section 30, the purpose of which will be presently described.
The said spreading roller member 26 may, if so desired, be positioned directly over the tank member 32, wherein the paper coating emulsion is placed, said tank member 32 having suitable trough 34 adapted for controlling the flow of the solution or emulsion into the center and beneath the said spreading roller 26, and also for preventing an accidental spilling of the said solution, further, for the purpose to drive the said roller M and the spreading roller 26 in proper direction, the ends of the said shafts are provided with suitable grooved pulleys 36 and 38 respectively, having a cross belt 40 associated therewith, which causes said rollers to operate in the same peripheral direction, also, in order to rotate said rollers at a desired speed, the opposite shaft end 42 of the shaft I6 is provided with a driving pulley 44, which is driven by means of a transmission pulley 46 and interconnected by means of a cross belt member 48, as shown.
Said transmission pulley 46 is mounted upon a suitable shaft to which a speed reduction pulley 50 is connected and which are operable by means of a belt 52 connecting the motor driving pulley 54 of the electric motor 56.
It may be noted, that the said set of driving pulleys, may, if so desired, be changed, so as to increase or decrease the speed of the roller [4, which governs the speed of the paper passing thereunder and co-relatively controlling the speed of the spreading roller member 26.
In order to feed the paper through the machine in short strips and widths, or, in long strip out of a suitable roll, the said machine is provided with suitable guide tapes 58, which are arranged in pairs of which one set of said guide tape 58 entrains the rollers l4 and 62 only, While the other set of guide tape 58 entrains over the rollers 60 then under and over the roller l4 entraining the pulleys 64, 66 and 68, finally returning to the rollers 60, as shown, thus allowing the paper to be guided continually, under and over the roller [4, when in operation.
For the purpose to actuate the pivotally mounted spreader roller 26, the lever extension 28 provided with the cam section 30 is adapted to engage the draw bar 10 which is operable by means of the magnetic influence of the solenoid member 12.
Said solenoid 12' is influenced by the electric current passing therethrough when the switch 14 is closed, and which is automatically closed or opened whenever the switch finger member 16 makes one turn or one revolution, so that, by changing the belt member 18 to any of the grooves of the said pair of grooved pulleys 80, then their rotation or speed and the opening or closing of the switch 14 in relation to the speed of the roller l4, may be regulated, consequently actuating the solenoid 12, which will cause the draw bar 16 to bear against the cam section 30, and therefore pivoting the spreading roller 26 in and out of the said tank 32 and against the said roller I4, or against the surface of the paper passing thereover.
By the arrangement of the mechanism herein described, an intermittent application of the emulsion, upon the paper surface may be had, further, it may be noted, that the driver of the grooved pulleys 36 may be changed at the main transmission shaft 82, in order to provide a slower or faster movement of the spreader roller 26 without greatly impairing the general driving members of the machine.
In the Fig. 3, the wiring diagram shows the source of power G from which the lead wire 84 connects the driving motor M and the lead wire 86 connecting the contact switch 14, and the return lead wire 90 from the motor M connects the solenoid member 12 at one end while the lead wire 92 completes the circuit between the said solenoid l2 and the said contact switch 14; then, in order to provide a complete circuit for the wiring, a lead wire 94 connects the wire 90 having a starting switch 96 from which the lead wire 98 leads to the source of power G, as shown.
We claim as our invention:
