BINDER FOR BOOKS I Filed June 14, 1939 INVENTOR ATTORN EY Patented Mar. 4, 1941 UNITED STATES BINDER FOR BOOKS Carl E. Skoog, Warwick, R. I., assignor to J. C. Hall Company, a corporation of Rhode Island Application June 14, 1939, Serial No. 279,017
1 Claim.
My present invention relates to the manufacture of books and the like, and has specific reference to a novel construction for binding pages and leaves which are secured with spiral 5' wire coils, to a cover.
It is the principal object of my invention to provide a simple and inexpensive construction for locking a spiral wire coil carrier for pages and leaves to a cover.
10} A further object of my invention is to provide a construction which permits flat opening of the leaves of the book at any point.
Another object of my invention is toprovide a construction for holding each coil of wire 15} under a slight tension, the construction being designed to facilitate assembling the parts and my locking the assembled parts to the cover.
With the above and other objects and advantageous features in view, my invention consists of a novel arrangement of parts more fully disclosed in the detailed description following, in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, and more specifically defined in the claim appended thereto.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is aperspective view, partly broken away, showing the novel mounting of pages in a cover;
Fig. '2 is an enlarged detail showing the arrangement of the parts when in secured position;
Fig. 3 is an end section of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 5 is a section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 6 is a perspective view, partly broken away, of the improved lock base; and
Fig.- 7 is a bottom View of one end of the improved lock base, the figure showing the end section in dotted lines prior to assembly.
It has been found desirable to provide a lock- 49] ing arrangement for check books, blank books,
printed pages, and the like which are secured together and supported by means of a spiral wire coil, and includes a lock base for effectively 1 gripping the separate wire coils, the lock base being secured to a cover. I have provided an improved lock base which may be made in one piece out of sheet metal stock, preferably by stamping, and which will engage each separate coil of the spiral coil and will effectively hold it under slight tension, the improved lock base being designed to extend upwardly within the spiral coil and to generally conform to the shape of the coil itself so as to provide a firm base M for the inner ends of the pages or leaves, and III having end sections which have securing tabs adapted to be positioned beneath the improved lock base.
Referring to the drawing, a book is illustrated, having a plurality of leaves or pages ll secured together by means of a spiral wire coil l2, the spiral Wire coil being locked to an outer cover I3 by means of an improved lock base M. The leaves are freely movable on the wire coil l2, see Fig. 2, as each leaf is provided with a plurality of openings [5 of larger diameter 10 than the width of the wire forming the spiral coil, which is threaded through the openings in well known manner. The improved lock base l2, see Fig. 6, is preferably stamped from sheet metal into an arcuate generally U-shaped form, the stock being shaped and bent over and formed with a plurality of slots IS on each edge H, the stock being also shaped at the ends to provide, end closures l8 which terminate in securing tab-s l9 adapted tobe bent beneath the lock base and having openings for riveting the tabs to the book cover. The upper portion of the lock base has openings 2| therein positioned in alignment with the openings 20 of the securing tabs, whereby a rivet tool may be readily inserted to permit use of rivets 22 in securing the fastening tabs to the book cover.
The height of the slots is preferably slightly less than the normal corresponding height of the wire coil above the cover, whereby the base of each coil is slightly flattened after the lock base is secured to the cover and thus imparts a desirable tension to each separate coil to increase the rigidity of the mounting.
The assembly of the parts is made by inserting the lock base through the coil, positioning the separate wire coils in their respective slots, then placing on the cover, and riveting or otherwise locking the fastening tabs [9 to the back of the cover by inserting the necessary tools through the openings 2|. The ends 23 of the coil are gripped by the end slots, but may be turned laterally or may have enlargements at the ends to provide a permanent lock of the free ends of the spiral coil within the lock base.
Although I have described a simple and satisfactory construction for an improved lock base, which utilizes a single easily manufactured stamping, the construction of the parts may be modified by changing the slot arrangement.
While I have described specific constructional embodiments of my invention, it is obvious that changes in the arrangement of the parts, in the materials therefor and in the shape and size and spacing of the slots, may be made to suit the requirements for different book designs, without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention, as defined in the appended claim.
I claim:
A lock base for a book cover comprising an inverted U-shaped elongated sheet metal member having spaced sides, the edges of said sides having spaced slots adapted to receive a coiled page support, said base having integral portions 1 at each end extending downwardly from the cen-
