My present invention relates, to the manufacture of Vbooks and the like, yand has specic reference to a novel lconstruction for binding pages and leaves secured with spiral wire coils, to a cover. 4 v Itis the principal object of my invention to provide a simple and inexpensive construction for locking the spiral wire coil to a cover.
A further object of my invention is to provide a. construction which permits structurally iiat opening of. the book at any point.
Another object of my invention is to provide a construction which will hold each coil of wire under a slight tension so as to render the mount-` ing more rigid.
With the above and other objects and advantageous features inlview, my invention consists `of a novel arrangement .of parts more fully disclosed in the detailed description following, in conjunction with lthe accompanying drawings, and more specifically dened in the claims appended thereto.

It has `been rfound desirable to provide a locking arrangement for check books, blank books, printed pages, and the like which are secured together and supported by means of-a spiral wire coil. The preferred locking arrangement consists of a lock base for `effectively gripping the separate Wire coils, the lock '.base then 4being se` cured `to a cover. I have provided 4a lool; base which may be made in one piece out of sheet metal stock, preferably by stamping, .and which will engage each separate coil of the spiral wire and'will effectively hold Vit .under slight tension,
thus provide for reiills of replacement pages.

The leaves .are freely movable on the Wire coil l2, see Fig. .2, :as .each leaf is provided with a plurality of .openings t5 `of larger diameter than the width of the wire forming the spiral coil, which is threaded through the openings in well known manner. The novel lock .base ill, see Fig. 5, is preferably` stamped from sheet metal into `an arcuate generally U-shaped form, with a plurality of slots i6 oneachedge il, the `stock being shaped and bent over at the ends to form closures .i8 30 "the `cover, whereby the base of each coil is slightly flattened to impart a .desirable tension to each separate coil and thus increase'rigidity of the mounting. Each slot 1 is preferably slightly` widened at the entrance to facilitate positioning the wire coils within the slots, theasseinbly being made by inserting the lock base through the coil, positioning `the separate wire coils in their respective slots, and then riveting the tabs `li) to the back of the cover. The ends 2l of the coil are gripped by the end slots, and need not be locked therein for. ordinary book construction, out may be turned laterally if desired asindicated in Fig. .6, to provide a permanent lock of the free ends of the spiral coil `within the locli base. 5
"If the book pages have substantial width, there may be a slight tendency for the cover to bow outwardly and .thus leave va 4sligl'rt gap Iadjacent the center of the mounting; in fsuch case, I may make 'the edges of the lock base convex tocompensate 5 for such bowing, or I may form the lock base with two tabs which extend laterally from-the edges adjacent the center of the lock base for additional riveting to the cover Although I have described a simple and satisfactory construction which utilizes a single easily manufactured locking element, the construction of the parts may be modified to secure a better locking, Fig. 7 showing an illustrative keyhole construction of slot v22 with inwardly sloping sides which form a restricted entrance to a slightly enlarged wire receiving recess 23, thus permitting a snap passage of the spiral wire coils into the terminal recesses 23, whereby the coils cannot be inadvertently displaced or separated from their respective slots. Or, the slots may be a combination of the type indicated at I6 with end slots of the keyhole type indicated in Fig. 7, as shown in Fig. 8, the end slots then grip- Y ping the free ends of the coil so as to obviate necessity for turning the free ends laterally Within the lock base as illustrated in Fig. 6.
For small pocket refills, such as for example for pocket check books, the lock base may be formed as illustrated at 24 in Fig. 9, the ends 25 being provided with downwardly extending fingers 26 which may be bent inwardly as indicated in dotted lines to detachably lock the movable lock base and its associated pages to a cover, the preferred construction including recesses within the cover into which the bent tongues may be received. If the cover is made of flexible material, the iingers 26 may be initially bent, and the cover then curved so as to slip the bent fingers into the receiving cover recesses.
If it be desired to provide a rell arrangement, the novel lock base may be formed as indicated at 21, in Fig. 10, with downwardly extending ngers 21a which are inserted in openings 28a ina slider plate 28 and bent over, the slider plate closing the open ends of the slots and being adapted to be slidingly received within a retention member 29 having inturned edges 30; the lock base 21 and its associated pages and spiral coil can be detachably secured to the cover by sliding the plate 23 within the edges 3U, suitable releasable locking means such as snap projections and for retaining the parts together being provided if desired. In certain constructions, it may be preferred to form the slider plate 28 of relatively exible material, so that the mounting within the member 29 may be accomplished b-y simply bending the sides of the lock base towards each other and positioning the flanges within the member 29, then releasing they lock base to permit the anges to slide laterally into locking engagement within the edges 30.
While I have described specic constructional embodiments of my invention, it is obvious that changes in the construction of the parts, in the materials used therefor, and in the general arrangement of the slots and the cover securing means for the locking base, may be made to suit the requirements for different book designs, without departing from the spirit and the scope of the invention as dened in the appended claims. I claim: l
1. In combination, with a coil support for a book or the like, a lock base having a central portion and spaced sides with aligned free edges, the free edges of said sides having slots to receive the coilsof said support, and a closure secured to said base and closing said slots to lock the coils in the slots.
2. In combination with a coil support for a book or the like, a cover, a lock base having a central portion and spaced sides with aligned free edges, the free edges of said sides having slots to receive the coils of said support, and means securing said base to said cover with said edges engaging said cover to lock the coils in the slots.
3. In combination with a coil support for a book or the like, a cover, a lock base having a central portion and spaced sides with aligned free edges, the free edges of said sides having slots to receive the coils of said support, and means for securing said base to said cover with said edges engaging said cover to lock the coils in the slots, said means including tabs secured to said cover.
4. In combination with a coil support for a book or the like, a lock base having a central portion and spaced sides with aligned free edges, thefree edges of said sides having slots to receive the coils of said support, said lock base having closed ends, and 'a closure secured to said base and closing said slots to lock the coils in the slots.
5. In combination with a coil support for a book or the like, a cover, a lock base having spaced sides, the edges of said sides having slots to receive the coils of said support, said lock base having closed ends terminating in tabs secured to said cover, whereby the edges engage the cover to lock the coils in the slots.
6. In combination with a coil support for a book or the like, a cover, a lock base having spaced sides, the edges of said sides having slots to receive the coils of said support, said lock base having closed ends terminating in nger tabs secured to said cover, whereby the edges engage the cover to lock the coils in the slots.
'7. In combination with a coil support for a book or the like, a lock base having spaced sides, the edges of said sides having slots to receive the coils of said support, said slots having recesses shaped to rmly grip said coils, and a closure secured to said base and closing said slots to lock the coils in the slots.
8. In combination with a coil support for a book or the like, a lock base having spaced sides, the edges of said sides having slots to receive the coils of said support, the end slots having recesses shaped to rmly grip said coils, and a closure secured to said base and closing said slots to lock the coils in the slots.
9. In combination with a coil support for a book or the like, a cover, a retention member having iianged edges and secured to said cover, and a lock member having a central portion and spaced sides terminating in aligned edges, said edges having spaced transverse edge slots adapted to receive individual coils of the coil support, and said lock member having lateral portions eX- tending outwardly from said sides and adapted to slide within the flanged edges of the retention member.
10. In combination with a coil support for a book or the like, a cover, a lock base having a central portion and spaced sides terminating in aligned free edges, the free edges having spaced slots for receiving individual coils of said support, a closure member for closing the open ends of said slots to lock the individual coils therein, and means for securing the closure member to said cover.
