Description

Feb. 25, H w l s COVER FASTENER Filed July 25, 1936 filwuherbe rt 06155 Patented Feb. 25, 1941 I r i I UNITED "STATES PATENT orrics Coven FASTENER John Herbert Weiss, Augusta, Ga., assignor to Leighway Fastener Company Benton Harbor,
Mich, a corporation of Michigan Application July 25, 1936, Serial No. 92,536 7 Claims. (01. 217-124) This invention relates to cover fasteners, and the hoop I and the under side of the stave 5, as more particularly to thewire fasteners employed shown more clearly in Figs. 2 and 4 of thedrawon bushel basket covers, or on the covers. for ing, and as indicated in dotted lines in Fig.3 of half bushel baskets, for removably securing the the drawing. V
covers in place, after the baskets are filled. As shown in Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawing, the 5 Generally stated, the object of the invention basket body 8 is provided with inner and outer is to provide a novel construction and arrangetop hoops 9 and H1, in the well known manner, ment whereby the ends of the wire, of the and the other members ll, of the two wire cover fastener members that are secured to the basket fasteners are attached to these hoops in the 10 cover, are inserted between the upper edge of manner shown, by inserting the wire inwardly, 10
the cover hoop and the lower surface of the and by suitably clinching the ends I2 against the veneer strips of'the cover, thereby to more firmly inside hoop. The tonguelike loops thus formed anchor the end portions of the wire in the maextend straight, upwardly, from the points terials of the cover, and also to prevent the ends where they are inserted through the hoops, when of the wire from scratching or injuring the the basket is ready for filling, and when the hands of the workers, one kind or another, who coveris placed in position; as is obvious, these are called upon to handle the baskets and covers. tongues I3 will extend upwardly through the It is also an object to provide certain details loops It of the cover fastener members, and the and specific features of construction tending to tongues l3 are then bent down in the manner increase the general efficiency and desirability of shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing.
wire basket cover fasteners of this particular In this way, the cover is securely, but removcharacter. ably, held in place on the top of the basket.
To the foregoing and other useful ends, the By anchoring the wire ends "I, in the manner invention consists in matters hereinafter set shown and described, the fastener member 6 is 5 forth and claimed and shown in the accompanyless liable to pull out, when it is interconnected ing drawing, in whichwith the wire members on the basket body, and
1 is a plan View of a basket cover proin addition, the ends I are embedded and covered vided with wire fastener members embodying in a manner to prevent them from scratching the the principles of the invention. i hands of workers who have to handle the baskets Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail or fragmentary and covers. In addition, it will be seen that the section on line 2-4 in Fig. l of the drawing. points of downward insertion of the wire, in the Fig. 3 is a perspective of a portion of abasket sheet material 2, are co-operatively close to the cover, and the adjacent portion of the basket points of horizontal insertion between the sheet body, showing the two wire fastener members, material and the hoop, whereby the stiffness of one on the cover, and the other on the basket the wire is effeotiveto prevent loosening of the 35 body, interconnected to hold the cover in place. 100D. where it is vertically, B fi in e Sheet 4 is a detail or fragmentary section on material. Moreover, the sharp points of the line la in Fig.3 of the drawing. wire are prevented from moving downward,
As thus illustrated, the basket cover, to which when a pull is imposed on the loop, and. thus the invention is applied, comprises a preformed ju y e u t o ther C ntents of the 40 hoop I, to which the flat staves or boards 2 are basket is prevented. In other words, without the secured by staples 3, in the well known manner. engagement of the sharp points of the wire with There is a cross stave 4, fastened to the top of the 1100p, the e Wou d not o y be the danger the cover, with projecting ends, so that these of the loosening of the loop where it is inserted 5 ends can be inserted through the basket handles, through the sheet material, but there would also in the well known manner. be the danger that the end portions of the wire At the opposite ends of the top stave 5, which would swing or move downward, as the result of is above the staves 2 and under the cross stave such loosening, and would scratch or injure the a, wire fastener members 6 are provided, each contents of the basket.
member being loop-shaped or bail-shaped in Thus it will be seen that an effective method 50 form, with the end of the loop extending beyond is provided for the disposition of the ends of a the end edge of the stave 5, in the manner shown. wire fastener member. As shown and described, The end portions of the wire are inserted downthe said fastener member is a cover fastener for w-ardly through the stave 5, and the extreme a basket cover. But a staple-shaped or baleend portions I are inserted outwardly between shaped wire member, of any suitable or desired form or character, for any suitable or desired purpose, may have its ends covered and disposed in position by insertion between flat material and the edge of a hoop, in order not only to more thoroughly anchor the wire member in the materials, but also to protect the hands of workers against injury by the sharp ends of the wire.
Thus the tight clamping of the ends 1 on the upper edge of the hoop or strip l, by the flat material 5, so that the member I4 will not pull out in ordinary use, is an important feature of the invention.
It is also obvious that this invention relates to covers having a reinforcing strip on the under side thereof, as without the reinforcing strip, such as the hoop I, the ends of the wire could not be clamped and rigidly held in place in the manner shown and described. More specifically considered, the invention relates to basket covers of the kind that have a hoop .on the bottom thereof, which hoop is adapted to rest upon the round upper edge of the basket.
As shown more clearly in Fig. 2, the edge of the flat material 5 preferably extends a distance beyond the hoop l and thus the ends of the wire terminate short of said edge, and thus do not extend beyond the outer side of said hoop.
