My invention relates to an apparatus and method for securing, by an added operation, the pasted flaps of the bottom of a folded bottom bag. More specifically my invention relates to an apparatus for pressing on the folded bottoms of bags as they are delivered on to the delivery belt, the apparatus having a flopping motion and a sideways motion that moves with the moving bags.
Great difilculty has been experienced in the manufacture of bags with bottoms that are formed by pasting down the flaps on a folded bottom because of the fact that the flaps tend to separate from the bag bottoms while the paste is still undried and consequently imperfect bags are formed. Since it is impossible to economically repaste the bottoms of these bags, they constitute rejects. Although a small percentage of bags come through the machine with the flaps unsecured, there is a serious loss incumbent in these rejects.
I have devised a novel apparatus which acts upon the bags directly as they are delivered from the forming machine on to the delivery apparatus. This apparatus has remedied completely the difficulty of separated or unpasted bottom flaps. Specifically, I provide a plate that is so actuated and timed with the bag forming ma- 3 chine as to move down upon the bag bottoms as the bags come out of the forming machine and press the bottoms so as to secure firmly bonded flap and bottom engagement.
Preferably, the plate is further actuated so as 5 to move in the direction of the travel of the bags so as to provide no stoppage to the automatic and continuous delivery of bags. By means of a novel arrangement of drive and cam engagements, this desirable pressing effect is obtained.
40 It is the object of my invention to provide a novel apparatus for synchronously pressing folded and pasted bag bottoms as the bags emerge from the forming machine.
It is another object of my invention to pro- 45 vide a novel plate apparatus synchronously timed with the forming machine that acts by means of a cam to press the bag bottoms at that point where a loosening of engagement of the bag flaps with the bag bottom may occur.
50 It is a further object of my invention to provide a novel apparatus comprising a plate which moves down upon the bag bottoms and at the same time moves in the direction of travel of the bags.
55 Other objects of my invention will be apparent from the drawing and the description of the operation which follows.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the apparatus of my invention.
Figure 2 represents a cross section taken along the line 2-2 of Figure 1 as the plate prepares to descend upon a bag whose flaps have separated from the bag bottom.

Referring now more specifically to the drawing, in Figure 1 I show a drive shaft I terminating in a bevel gear 2 which coacts with a similar bevel gear 3 mounted on a shaft 4 carried by the bearing 5. Rlgidly mounted on the shaft 4 is a split cam 8 with the two sections 1 and 8 which are joined through the slot 9 by means of the screw I0. By means of this split cam arrangement a cam surface of the desired length may be had. Thus, by adjustment of the two sections 1 and 8 of the cam by means of the slot and screw arrangement a greater or lesser cam surface may be provided. The split cam 8 acts on rotation upon a roller ll rotatably mounted on an arm I2. The arm I2 and the arm l3 are rigid with respect to each other and are mounted for rotation in the bearing I4. A spring l5 acts to draw the arm I2 down against the cam 6. The bearing 14 may be a cast piece and can be secured by means of the plate IS on to a suitable surface.
' The arm l3 terminates in an engaging member H which engages the link IS. The link l8 rides in a slot [9 in a block 20. This positioning of the link in a slot prevents a sideways motion of the link IS. The link I8 is secured at 23 to the shaft 24 mounted in the bearings 25 and 26 which constitute a portion of the brackets 21 and 28. The brackets 21 and 28 are securely mounted by means of the fastening means 30 to the plate 3|.
Returnin now to the driven shaft 4, it is found that the shaft is mounted in the bearing 40. At the end of the shaft there is rigidly mounted thereon a cam 4| with a cam surface 42. This cam surface acts on rotation with the roller 43 mounted by meansof the pin 44 on the arm 45. Rigid with the arm 45 is an arm 46. Arms 45 and 46 are mounted to rotate about the rigid shaft 41 mounted in the bearing 48 secured by the bracket 49 to a suitable surface. A spring 50 secured to the arm 46 at 5| pulls the arm 46 so as to maintain the roller 43 against the cam surface 42. 56
The arm 46 terminates in a forked member 51 where it is engaged with a link 58 by means of a pin 59. The link 58 engages. by means of the pin 60, a bracket 3| which is rigidly mounted upon the shaft 62 by means of a suitable secur ing means. The shaft 62 is loosely mounted in the bearings 10 and II so that it can move freely back and forth through these hearings under the pull of the bracket 8|. The bearings I0 and II are secured by means of the flanges l2 and I3 to a suitable surface. The plate 3| is secured for rotation with the shaft 62 by means of the brackets 14 and I5. The plate 3| is adapted to move down upon the bags which are delivered in the direction shown by the arrow 3| onto the delivery belt 82. This delivery belt is maintained as a fairly rigid surface to support the pressure plate 3| by making the delivery belt of metallic material as in sections or by providing suitable supporting, surfaces thereunder. The delivery belt is adapted to move about the drums 30 and ill which rotate about the shafts 92 and 93, the shafts being driven by a suitable power source.
Referring now more specifically to Figure 2, there is shown a bag 80 upon the delivery belt 82 with the bottom flap Hill separated from the bag bottom. The delivery belt rides over a rigid supporting surface 85. Positioned to move down upon and press the bag flap upon the bag bottom is the plate 3| actuated by the link IS.
The operation of the apparatus will now be described. As has been noted above, as the bag 80 comes from the bag forming machine there is often a tendency for the flap I00 to separate from the bag. It is very desirable to prevent this separation and for that purpose the plate 3| moves down upon the bag bottoms as the bags ride on the delivery belt, and repeatedly presses'the flaps down upon the bag bottoms. In order not to interrupt the continuous motion of the bags, in addition to the downward flopping motion of the plate 3|, a sidewise travel in the direction of travel of the bags is provided for this plate.
It is imperative that the action of the plate 3| be synchronized with the formation of the bags and their delivery from the machine on to the de- ,livery belt. In order to effect this synchronization the drive for the apparatus of my invention is provided through the shaft I which is connected with the drive mechanism for the bag forming machine itself. The drive I acts through the bevel gears 2 and 3 to rotate the shaft 4. The split cam 6 is so adjusted as to provide a suitable cam surface so that the plate 3| is pressed down upon the bags for sufllcient time, in accordance with what is necessary to prevent separation of the bag bottoms.
Split cam G rotated by the shaft 4 acts against the roller II to move the arm I 2 against the action of the spring l5. The arm |2 in turn moves the rigidly connected arm |3 which acts through the connecting member I! on to link I 8 throwing that link l8 forward when the high surface of the cam 6 acts upon the roller As the link l8 moves forward through the slot l9 it positions against the surface 24 thus forcing down the plate 3| onto the bags 80 and the possibly detached bag flaps I00. The plate 3| then bears against the bags 80 for the time determined by the extent of the high cam surface on the cam 6. When the low cam surface acts on the roller II, the spring l5 pulls the arm |2 down to bring the link l8 back consequently lifting the plate 3|. In synchronous arrangement with this vertical movement, a side travel of the plate 3| is provided by means of the cam 4| on the end of the shaft 4 acting against the roller 43 mounted on the arm 45. As the high portion of the cam 42 bears against the roller 43 the arm 45 is forced downwardly and the rigidly connected arm 46 is thereupon thrown to the right against the action of the spring 50. By means of the connection 51 this thrust is transmitted to the link 58 which is connected at 60 to the bracket 6|. The bracket 6| being rigidly secured to the shaft 62 moves the shaft to the right and with it the plate 3| which is rigidly secured to the shaft by means of the brackets 14 and 15.
Upon movement of the plate 3|, as indicated, the link |8 through the opening 23 rides freely upon the shaft 24. The li nk-|8 is maintained as has been noted against sideways motion by the rigidly secured block 20 and the slot l9 therein.
Thus, as a bag is delivered from the bag forming machine at 8| on to the delivery belt 82,
the plate 3| moves down upon the bag and. presses it firmly so that any separated flap ||l|| is resecured to the bag bottom. At the same time that the plate 3| is moved down, it is also moving at a predetermined speed in the direction of travel of the bags so that there is no interruption to the travel of the bags. At the end of its path of travel, the plate is again lifted and returns by reason of the action of the spring 50 against the link 46 and because of the action of the roller portion of the cam 4| against the roller 43. The plate 3| again descends at a predetermined time and presses both the newly delivered bags and the bags which have just been pressed. Thus the bags as they travel upon the delivery belt are continuously subjected to the pressing action of the plate 3| so that any possibly detached flaps of the bag are resecured.
The machines can be used in the manufacture of flat bottom bags, single flap bags, satchel bottom bags, coffee bags and double bottom bags. New and improved results have been secured by the use of this synchronizing mechanism. The problem of separated bag bottoms has been a serious one in the industry and it has been diflicut to devise a mechanism which can effect the desired resecuring without interrupting the travel of the bags.
As is evident the split cam G is adjusted with respect to the cam 4| so that the proper up and down motion of the plate 3| is eflected with respect to the sidewise travel of the plate.
I claim:
1. A bag bottom pressing apparatus comprising a reciprocating plate rigidly attached to and adapted to move with a shaft, said shaft being mounted in bearings, means for moving the plate down upon bags travelling on a delivery belt comprising a link, said link being actuated by an arm, said arm being actuated by a cam mounted on a driven shaft.
2. A bag bottom pressing apparatus comprising a reciprocating plate rigidly attached to and adapted to move with a shaft, said shaft being mounted in bearings, and means for moving the plate down upon bags travelling on a delivery belt comprising a. link moving within a slot, said link being actuated by an arm, said arm being actuated by a cam mounted on a driven shaft.
3. A bag bottom pressing apparatus comprising a reciprocating plate and means for moving the plate down upon bags travelling on a delivery belt, and a driven shaft having two cams rigidly aflixed thereto for actuating said reciprocating plate in the two movements. v
4. A bag bottom pressing apparatus comprising a reciprocating plate rigidly attached to and adapted to move with a shaft, said shaft being mounted in bearings, and means for moving the plate down upon bags travelling on a delivery belt comprising a link moving within a slot, said link being actuated by an arm, said arm being actuated by a cam mounted on a driven shaft to move in timed relation with the bag forming machine which delivers the bags to be pressed.
5. A bag pressing apparatus comprising a supported delivery belt, a reciprocating plate adapted to rotate on a shaft to press freshly pasted bag bottoms, and means for moving the plate down upon bags travelling on a delivery belt comprising a link, said link being actuated by an arm to move in timed relation with the bags to be pressed, said arm being actuated by a cam.

A bag pressing apparatus comprising a supported delivery belt, a reciprocating plate adapted to rotate on a shaft to press freshly pasted bag bottoms, and means for moving the plate down upon bags travelling on a delivery belt comprising a link moving within a slot, said link being actuated by an arm to move in timed relation with the bag forming machine which delivers the bags to be pressed, said arm being pivoted about a fixed point, said arm being actuated by a cam.

A bag pressing apparatus comprising a supported delivery belt, a reciprocating plate adapted to rotate on a shaft to press freshly pasted bag bottoms, means for moving the plate down upon bags travelling on a delivery belt comprising a link, said link being actuated by an arm, said arm being actuated by a cam mounted on a driven shaft, a second cam mounted to act in timed relation with said first mentioned cam, said second cam being mounted on said driven shaft, said second cam being positioned to actuate an arm, said arm being positioned to actuate a link, said link being positioned to effect a reciprocating sidewise motion of the reciprocating plate.

A bag pressing apparatus comprising a supported delivery belt, a reciprocating plate rigidly attached to and adapted to move with a shaft, said shaft being mounted in bearings, said shaft extending a distance on both sides of said bearings, means for moving the plate down upon bags travelling on a delivery belt comprising a link, said link being actuated by an arm, said arm being pivoted about a fixed point, said arm being actuated by a cam mounted on a driven shaft, a second cam mounted to act in timed relation with said first mentioned cam, said second cam being mounted on said driven shaft, said second cam being positioned to actuate an arm, said arm being positioned to actuate a link, said link being connected with a bracket, said bracket being rigidly secured to said first mentioned shaft whereby upon actuation by said second cam said first shaft and rigidly attached pressing plate are moved in sidewise motion in the direction of the bags on the delivery belt.

A bag pressing apparatus comprising a supported delivery belt, a reciprocating plate rigidly attached to and adapted to move with a shaft, said shaft being mounted in bearings, said shaft extending a distance on both sides of said bearings, means for moving the plate down upon bags travelling on a delivery belt comprising a link moving within a slot, said link being actuated by an arm, said arm being pivoted about a fixed point, said arm being actuated by a cam mounted on a driven shaft, a second cam mounted to act in timed relation with said first mentioned cam, said second cam being mounted on said driven shaft, said second cam being positioned to actuate an arm, said arm being pivoted about a fixed point, said arm being positioned to actuate a link, said link being connected with a bracket, said bracket being rigidly secured to said first mentioned shaft whereby upon actuation by said second cam said first shaft and rigidly attached pressing plate are moved in sidewise motion in the direction of the bags on the delivery belt.
10. A bag pressing apparatus comprising a supported delivery belt, a reciprocating plate rigidly attached to and adapted to move with a shaft, said shaft being mounted in bearings, said shaft extending a distance on both sides of said bearings, means for moving the plate down upon bags travelling on a delivery belt comprising a link moving within a slot, said link being actuated by an arm, said arm being pivoted about a fixed point, said arm being actuated by a cam mounted on a. driven shaft, a second cam mounted to act in timed relation with said first mentioned cam, said second cam being mounted on said driven shaft, said second cam being positioned to actuate an arm, said arm being pivoted about a fixed point, said arm being positioned to actuate a link, said link being connected with a bracket, said bracket being rigidly secured to said first mentioned shaft whereby upon actuation by said second cam said first shaft and rigidly attached pressing plate are moved in sidewise motion in the direction of the bags on the delivery belt, said driven shaft carrying the actuating cams being synchronously connected to the bag forming machine.
11. A bag bottom pressing apparatus comprising a reciprocating plate rigidly attached to and adapted to move with a shaft, said shaft being mounted in bearings, and means attached to said shaft for effecting lateral movement of said plate, said last mentioned means comprising a pivoted rocking arm, one end of said arm engaging a link in operative engagement with said shaft, the other end of said arm being actuated by a cam.

A bag bottom pressing apparatus comprising a reciprocating plate rigidly attached to and adapted to move with a shaft, said shaft being mounted in bearings, means attached to said shaft for efiecting lateral movement of said plate, said last mentioned means comprising a pivoted rocking arm, one end of said arm engaging a link in operative engagement with said shaft, the other end of said arm being actuated by a cam, and means comprising a link for moving the plate down upon bags travelling on a delivery belt.
13. A bag bottom pressing apparatus comprising a reciprocating plate rigidly attached to and adapted to move with a shaft, said shaft being mounted in bearings, and means for moving the plate down upon bags travelling on a delivery belt comprising a link, said link being actuated by an arm; said arm being actuated by an intermittent actuating means.
14. A bag bottom pressing apparatus comprising a supported delivery belt, a reciprocating plate adapted to move with a shaft to press freshly pasted bag bottoms, and means for moving the plate in the direction of travel of the delivery belt when it presses against the delivery belt, and means for retracting the plate from its pressing "position and returning it laterally to its original position and means for providing both movements of the reciprocating plate in timed relation to the delivery of the bags from the bag forming machine, both said reciprocating plate and said means for providing movement of the plate in the direction of travel of the delivery belt being actuated from, a. common shaft, two
