'l Claims.
This invention relates to an improvement in devices for applying a liquid adhesive to sheet or strip material.
The disclosed form of the invention is adapted to apply a liquid adhesive to a marginal portion of one face of material in sheet or strip form.
The device may be either manually or mechanically operated to feed the material therethrough and provides means for varying the quantity of adhesive that may be applied to the material.
' Prior to this invention it has been the practice to apply an adhesive to sheet or strip material through the use of a brush or special cap on an adhesive container. In some instances the material is treated with a quick drying adhesive that can only be used upon the application of moisture. In manybusiness organizations it is frequently necessary to superpose printed or other forms upon contracts or other memoranda. Because'thls is not a general requirement, it is unnecessary to have all forms prepared with an adhesive marginal portion and, therefore, it becomes advantageous to apply a coating of adhesive to a sheet or strip as and g5 when it is desired to permanently mount the sheet or strip.
The present invention has been developed for the purpose of providing a device for applying an adhesive to sheet or strip material, and this,
therefore, constitutes one of the objects of the invention.
Anther object of the invention lies in the provision of a device for applying a liquid adhesive to a marginal portion of sheet or strip material.
Another object of the invention lies in the provision of a device for applying an adhesive to sheet or strip material in which adjustment may be made to vary the amount of adhesive o to be applied.
Another object of the invention lies in the provision of an adhesive applying device having means for maintaining a sheet or strip in contact with an adhesive applicator during movement of the sheet or strip through the device.

Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view, taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Figure 1;
Figure 4 is an enlarged fragmentary vertical sectional view with parts broken away showing the means by which sheet or strip material is held in contact with an adhesive applicator; and
Figure 5 is a Vertical sectional view, taken substantially on the line 5-5 of Figure 1.
Figure 6 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view, taken substantially on line 6-6 of Figure 4, and discloses meansv for disengaging the material from the feed roller.
Reference is now had to the drawing wherein the numeral I0 is employed to designate, in general, one modification of a device for use in applying a coating of adhesive to sheet or strip material. The device comprises a rectangular box-like structure IU having a front wall II, rear wall I2, and side walls I3 and I4. A plate 20 I'I covers the top of the device and forms a work receiving surface. To provide adequate surface for receiving sheet or strip material, the plate I6 may be of such proportions as to overhang the front wall II of the device. Adjacent the 25 rear of the device, an opening or slot Il is made transversely of the plate I6. Mounted in any suitable manner, as by bearings I8 located in the side walls I3 and I4, is a shaft I9. This shaft serves to mount a roller 2| that, for con- 30 venience, may be separated into several roller surfaces by the provision of annular grooves 22. Located within the device is an adhesive reservoir 23. One end of the reservoir may be mounted on a bracket 24 and the other end secured 35 to the wall I3 along a flange 26, by means of a screw 21. Mounted on the shaft I9, between one end of the roller 2| and the wall I3, is an adhesive applicator 28 that is in the form of a roller. This roller, in the present disclosure, is o of substantially the same diameter as roller 2| and at all times a portion thereof is within the reservoir 23.- The rollers 2I and 28 project above the plate I6 through the opening I I provided therefor. Secured to the inner face of the plate I6, adjacent the circumferential edge of the roller 28, is a bracket 29. The bracket 29, through a pin 3|, pivotally supports one end of an arm 32. The other end of the arm is forked and adapted to receive the circumferential edge of the roller 28 in the space thus formed. One end of a shaft 33 is joined to the arm 32. The other end oi' this shaft projects through the front wall Il and is fitted with a suitable knob 34. A bracket 36, secured to the wall II, has an opening through which the shaft 33 projects. Threads on the shaft and in the walls of the opening of the bracket prevent longitudinalmovement of the shaft 33 in any manner except by rotation. A lock nut 31, mounted on the shaft 33, serves to prevent inadvertent rotation thereof and consequent axial movement.
Above the plate I6 is a guide roller supporting member, generally 'indicated by the numeral 38. The member 38 includes a plate 39 that is arranged transversely of one end of the device. The end 40 of the plate, located adjacent the roller 28, is provided with one or more vertical flanges 4I that project downwardly through a suitable opening in or adjacent one edge of the plate I6 and are secured in any suitable manner to the rear and side walls I2 and I3 of the device. Adjacent the end 40, the plate 39 is formed with slots 42, the corresponding walls 43 of which serve to pivotally mount the upper ends of a pair of arms 44 and 46. A further pair of arms 44 and 46 are pivotally joined to the free end 41 of the plate 39. As may be seen from the drawing, arms 46 are straight, being suspended adjacent the rear of the plate 39. These arms serve to carry a shaft 46 located beneath the front of the plate 39. Arms 44 are suspended at the front edge of the plate 39 in the same plane as arms 46 and are formed with centrally offset portions 49 for this purpose. The lower ends of arms 44 carry a shaft 5| located adjacent the rear of the plate 39. Mounted on each of the shafts 48 and 5| are spaced apart rollers 52. Adjacent the lower ends of arms 44 and 46 are pins 53. These pins are engaged by springs 54 that normally urge the rollers 52 downwardly into positive contact with the roller 2 I.
In the present modification, three rollers 52 are positioned on each of the shafts 48 and 5|. Between corresponding rollers of each shaft is located a shoe 56. The shoe is formed with a central portion that is adjacent and generally conforms to the contour of the roller 2|. The shoe is formed with upwardly curved ends 51 that extend over the plate I6 of the device. Each shoe is carried by one or more rods 58 that are threaded into the plate 39. Lock nuts 59 serve to prevent displacement of the shoes 56 and at the same time permit vertical adjustment thereof.
Having described the structural features of the invention, the operation thereof is as follows. It is assumed that a liquid adhesive has been placed in the reservoir 23. A sheet or strip of material 6| is placed on the plate I6 adjacent a guide bar 62. The material is moved along the plate until the front edge thereof projects beneath the forward ends 51 of shoes 56 and contacts the meeting surfaces of rollers 2| and 52. Any suitable means may be employed to rotate roller 2|, such, for example, as a crank 63, which is securedto an extension of the shaft I9. Rotating the shaft I9 causes rollers 2| and 52 to rotate, feeding the material 6I over roller 2| and beneath shoes 56. The adhesive applicator roller 28 is rotated simultaneously with the rotation of roller 2| and having accumulated a quantity of adhesive, transfers it to the material. The adhesive applied to the material is of uniform thickness due to the forked end of arm 32. The thickness of the adhesive layer may be varied by rotating knob 34, which, through shaft 33, adjusts arm 32 toward or away from the roller 28. Thus, when the adhesive coated roller 28 comes into contact with the under surface of the material 6I, only a desired amount of adhesive is applied to said material.
It will be noted that lugs 64 are provided on the plate I6. These lugs are incurred upwardly and project into grooves 22 of the roller 2|. Their purpose is to strip the material from the roller 2l following application of the adhesive.
It will be understood that the applicator may be of different proportions than shown and may be located other than adjacent one side of the device for the purpose of applying an adhesive to any other part of the material 6I. Furthermore, it will be noted that through the provision of the floating rollers and shoes the material is at'all times caused to follow a definite and predetermined path through the device during the process of applying the adhesive.
Although applicant has shown and described only one modification of his invention, it will be understood by those skilled in the art that other modifications and adaptations thereof may be made vwithout departing from the spirit andy scope of the invention as definedein the hereunto annexed claims.
Having thus set forth my invention what I claim as new and for which I desire protection by Letters Patent is:
l. A device for applying an adhesive to flexible material comprising a support, an adhesive reservoir, a rotatable applicator projecting into said reservoir, a feed roller in said device, guide shoes positioned above said roller, means causing the material to contact said roller and' said applicator, said means being interspaced with said shoes, and further means for simultaneously rotating said roller and said applicator whereby to move the material through said device and progressively transfer adhesive from said applicator to the material.l
2. A device for applying an adhesive to flexible material comprising a support, an adhesive reservoir, a rotatable applicator projecting into said reservoir, a material receiving top on said support, a feed roller in said device projecting through a suitable opening in said top, guide means located above and adapted to direct said material onto said feed roller, floating rollers interspaced with said guide means serving to contact the material with said feed roller and said applicator, said feed roller and said applicator being rotatable to move the material through said device and transfer adhesive thereto.
3. A device for applying a liquid adhesive to flexible material comprising a support, an adhesive reservoir carried by said support, a rotatable shaft in said support, a feed roller and applicator carried by said shaft, said applicator projecting into said reservoir, sets of rollers above said feed roller, adjustable guide means interposed between corresponding rollers of said sets, said rollers and said means serving to contact the material with said feed roller and said applicator, and means for rotating said shaft whereby to move the material through said device and apply an adhesive coating thereto.
4. A device for applying a liquid adhesive to flexible material comprising a support, an adhesive reservoir carried by said support, a rotatable shaft in said support, a feed roller and applicator carried by said shaft, said applicator projecting into said reservoir, sets of spaced apart rollers adjacent said feed roller, guide shoes interposed between corresponding rollers of said sets, spring urged means mounting said rollers forpressure contacting the material with said feed roller and said applicator, meansmovable into immediate proximity with said applicator serving to vary the quantity of adhesive taken on by said applicator, and further means for rotating said shaft.
5. In a device for applying liquid adhesive to flexible material, a support, an adhesive reservoir carried by said support, a rotatable shaft in said support, a feed roller and applicator carried by said shaft, -said-l applicator projecting into said reservoir, two sets of rollers, means suspending said sets of rollers above said feed roller, said sets of rollers being engageable with said feed roller under pressure produced at least in part by the Weight of said sets of rollers, said sets of rollers being so positioned as to produce a slight wrap around of said flexible material on said feed roller and said applicator when said material moves through said device by rotation of said feed roller.

In a device for applying a liquid adhesive to flexible material, a support, a feed roller and adhesive applicator mounted on a shaft in said support, a plate above said roller, depending arms pivotally connected with said plate, shafts carried by said arms, spaced rollers on each of said shafts, the rollers on each shaft being in close proximity with and caused at least in part to contact the upper surface of said feed roller by force of gravity said roller serving, when material is fed through said device, to produce a slight wrap around of said material on said feed roller.
7. In a device for applying a liquid adhesive to fiexible material, a receptacle member, an adhesive reservoir in said member and having exterior connection for manual removal thereof, a feed roller on said shaft, an adhesive applicator roller on said shaft adjacent one end of said feed roller, said applicator roller projecting into said reservoir, a plate extending transversely of and positioned above said member, pairs of arms pivotally connected at opposite ends of said plate, the arms of each pair being crossed, shafts carried by corresponding pairs of said arms, spaced apart rollers on said shafts, guide means depending from said plate, said guide means being interposed between'the spaced apart rollers and in close proximity with a portion of said feed roller, the rollers carried by said shafts cooperating with said guide means to contact said material with said feed roller and said adhesive roller.
