10 Claims.
This invention relates to a device for the expressing of juices from a pulp. More particularly the invention pertains to a device for the expressing of fruit juices from pulped fruits through cloth.
An important object of the present invention is to provide an appliance for securely holding and tightly clamping the upper portion of a cloth bag to conne within the bag pulped fruit from which juices may then be expressed by compressing said bag.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device for the expression of fruit juices from fruit pulps comprising a cloth bag and an easily detachable and replaceable holder therefor.
Yet another object of this invention is to provide a device of the nature indicated which may conveniently be held by one hand while compression oi" the bag is effected by the other hand.
A further object of this invention is to provide a device for the separation of juices from a pulp without `burning or staining the hands of the operator.
Other and further objects of the present invention will become apparent to those skilled in the art from the following description and appended drawing.
The above mentioned ends are attained in a device which maiT be broadly described as comprising an elongated open-framed handle constricted adjacent one end and a rounded loop or eye at said end. Across the open frame of the non-constricted end portion of the handle there may be alixed a depending plate whose terminal portion is bent toward the full end of the handle.
This novel device is hereinbelow described in greater detail with special reference to the drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a top plan View of a holding device according to this invention.
Figure 2 is a side view of the device illustrated in Figure l.
Figure 3 is a side elevational View of a cloth bag, a holding device as shown in Figure 1, a potato masher, a colander, and a container, in assembled relationship for the expressing of juices from a pulp contained in said bag.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary side elevational view, with parts broken away, of the handle of the device of Figure 1 together with the upper portion of a cloth bag, illustrating the manner of coaction between the depending bent plate and the bag.
As shown on the drawing:
In Figures l and 2 the reference numeral It) indicates generally a holding device according to this invention. The holder Il] comprises an elongated open-:framed handle II constricted at I2, and, adjacent thereto, a rounded loop or eye I3. Across the open-framed non-constricted end portion of the handle I I there is iixedly attached a depending plate Ill whose terminal portion IllA is bent at right angle away from the constricted end portion of the handle I I.
A holding device as described may be made by 10 looping a heavy wire back upon itself into narrow U-shape, constricting the resulting loop completely adjacent its bottom and incompletely at a second and higher point, bending the end portions of the shanlis of said U to circularly close 15 the top of said U, and uniting contacting portions of said two Shanks by soldering or welding. If desired, the U formed by the wire may be twisted through 180 at a point near its bottom and thereafter incompletely constricted above the2u point of twisting.
That end portion of the handle il beyond the point of constriction I2 is suitably made narrower and longer than the loop i3. 'Ihe inner surface of this narrow portion may be provided with intermittently projecting points or ridges. The loop I3 is preferably round.
For afilxing to the handle II the depending plate it may be formed with a therewith integral strip HQE which lies flatly across the handle II with its ends curled around the frame of said handle. The depending plate It projects at right angle from the middle portion of that side of the strip ItB facing the full end of the handle II and extends through and beyond the space within the open-framed handle, tapering from an original width preferably equal to said space to a terminal width on the order of a 1/4 inch.
The depending plate I4 with its strip MB may 4be stamped or otherwise formed from sheet metal, the strip MB and the terminal portion IllA being bent to project away from each other in parallel planes. The thus formed plate is then assembled with the handle Il as indicated hereinabove, the ends of the strip HiB being curled around the frame of the handle.
IThe holding device oi this invention is preferably constructed of acid resisting material. It may be fabricated from iron o-r steel and thereafter tinned.
Our novel holding device is utilized for the expression of fruit juices from fruit pulps in combination with a bag made of cloth adapted to allow said juices to pass therethrough while retaining the substance of said pulp, for instance, muslin or other like 4coarse porous material.
Such a bag is partially filled with fruit pulped by crushing or cooking. A filter aid may be intermixed with said pulp. The top of the bag is gathered in compactly and threaded upwardly through the round loop I3 as far as possible. The free end of the bag is then pulled downwardly through the open-framed handle I I,' through the constricted throat I2 and into the adjacent narrow end portion. The bag is then held securely and its top is clamped oi to prevent the escape of pulp therethrough.
To render the clamping eiect more certain, the bag may be twisted relative to the holder after its top has been inserted therein.
As shown in Figure 3, a bag I5 containing fruit pulp and held by the holder I0 in the manner described hereinabove may beplaced in a colander I6 standing in a container I'I and compressed by means of a potato masher I8 or other serviceable instrument, to easily and completely express the juices from said pulp. If desired, the bag may be pulled further into the holder as juice is eX- pressed.
Juices may also be expressed by simply twisting a bag partially lled with pulp held by the present device. Such a twisting may be followed by a compression of the bag eifected as described hereinabove.
However utilized, the present device is easily assembled With and detached from a vbag and permits the operator to hold the latter securely and tightly with one hand, the other hand being left free to effect the compression of the bag. At the same time the length of the handle and the fact that compression can be effected by the use of a potato masher or like instrument protects the hands of the operator from being burned or a strained.
The depending plate I4 oiers an additional means for securing a bag onto the holder I0. As shown in Figure 4, if the bag I5 is transversely slotted adjacent its top in two diam-etrcally opposed places I9, the top of the bag may be threaded through the loop I 3, pulled through the throat I2, as explained hereinabove, and thereafter pulled back over the plate I4 which is inserted through the slots I9. The bent terminal portion I4A then serv-es to keep the bag I5 from slipping olf the plate I ll. Instead of being slotted in one or more places, the top of the bag I5 may also have one or more short looping bands sewn thereto.
The depending plate I 4 may also serve to remove crown caps from vacuum sealed jars, the constricted end I2 of the device I0 then serving as a handle.
This invention thus provides a device adapted for holding a bag having its top threaded therethrough not only by offering great frictional resistance against the slipping of the bag therethrough but also by providing means for catching a slot, loop or the like in the top of the bag.
It Will, of course, be understood that various details of construction may be varied through a Wide range Without departing from the principles of this invention and it is, therefore, not the purpose to limit the patent granted hereon otherwise than necessitated by the scope of the appended claims.
We claim as our invention:
1. A device adapted for holding and clamping the top of va bag comprising an elongated openframed handle portion constricted near one end and a closed loop shorter than said handle portion integrally connected to said end and lying in the plane of said handle portion.
2. A device adapted for use in expressing juices from a pulp comprising an elongated openframed handle constricted near one end, a rounded loop integrally connected to said end, and a plate depending transversely from the full end portion of said handle at a point spaced from the end thereof, the terminal portion of said plate being bent away from said constricted end portion.
3. A metallic device adapted for holding and clamping off the top of a bag comprising an interiorly open iiat handle constricted laterally at a point adjacent but spaced from one end of said handle, that portion` of said handle intermediate said point of constriction and said end being narrower than the rest of said handle, together With a closed rounded loop integrally connected to said end.
4. An integral metallic device adapted for holding and clamping olf the top of a bag comprising an elongated flat handle interiorly open throughout its length and constricted laterally at a point adjacent but spaced from one end of said handle, that portion of said handle intermediate said point of constriction and said end being narrower than the rest of said handle but Wider than said constricted point, together with a closed round at loop in the plane of said handle connected to said end.
5. A metallic device adapted for holding and clamping off the top of a bag comprising/an interiorly open at handle constricted laterally at a point adjacent but spaced from one end of said handle, that portion of said handle intermediate said point of constriction and said end being narrower than the rest of said handle, together with a rounded loop integrally connected to said end and a depending plate transversely aixed to the wider portion of said handle at a point spaced from the other end thereof.
6. A metallic device adapted for holding and clamping olf the top of a bag comprising an elongated at handle interiorly open throughout its length and constricted laterally at a point adjacent but spaced from one end of said handle, that portion of said handle intermediate said point of constriction and said end being narrower than the rest of said handle but Wider than said constricted point, a round flat loop integral With and in the same plane as said handle and continuing said end, together with a metallic strip traversing the Wider portion of said handle at a point adjacent to but spaced from the end thereof, the ends of said strip being curled around the edges of said handle, a metallic plate integral with and depending from said strip through and beyond the interior of said handle and having a terminal portion bent away from said loop.

A metallic device adapted for holding and t clamping off the top of a bag comprising an elongated closed wire loop completely constricted at a point adjacent to but spaced from one end thereof and incompletely constricted at a second point adjacent to but spaced from said rst point, the portion of said loop intermediate said two points being narrower than the rest of the loop.
8. A metallic device adapted for holding and clamping olf they top of a bag comprising an elorrgated flat wire loop completely constricted at a point adjacent to but spaced from one end thereof and incompletely constricted at a second point adjacent to but spaced from said rst point, to-
gether With a flat member depending transversely from said loop at a point adjacent to but spaced from the other end thereof, said flat member being bent at a point adjacent to but spaced from its end to project away from said constrictions.
9. An integral device adapted for use in eX- pressing juices from a pulp contained in a bag, said device comprising a closed eye through which the top of said bag may be threaded and a handle member interiorly open in the same direction as said eye and constricted adjacent the same to receive and hold in said constricted portion the top of said bag threaded through said eye.
10. A metallic device adapted for use in expressing juices froIn a pulp contained in a bag having a top adapted to receive a plate therethrough, said device comprising an eye through which the top of said bag may be threaded, a handle member integral with said eye, interiorly open in the same direction as said eye and constricted adjacent the same to receive and hold in said constricted portion a portion of the top of said bag threaded through said hole, and a plate depending transversely from the full end portion of said handle member at a point spaced from the full end thereof and adapted to be received by the top of said bag, the terminal portion of said plate being bent away from said constricted end portion, to prevent the disengagement of the top of said bag from said plate.
