' invention aims to supply novel means for mounting and operating the closure member. The invention aims, further, to supply a casing of novel form, and to provide novel means for holding it in place.
It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the present invention appertains.
With the above and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination andarrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise em bodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings:
Fig. 1 shows in front elevation, a device con.- structed in accordance with the invention;
Fig. 2 is a section on the line 22 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a Vertical section on the line 44 of Fig.2;
Fig. 5 is a section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 6 is a vertical sectional view illustrating the means for securing the upper portion of the casing.
The drawings show the floor of a building, having an opening 2. On the floor is secured a base frame 3, having an opening 4 registering with the opening 2 in the floor. The base frame 3 has an upstanding rim 5 about its entire margin. The base frame 3 is provided along the forward edge of the opening 4, and at the ends thereof, with a depending flange 6, fitting within the opening 2 in the floor. Along the rear edge of the opening 4, the base frame 3 is supplied with an upstanding lip l, disposed parallel to the rear portion of the upstanding rim 5.
The numeral 8 designates a casing, having an opening H5 at the front, the casing being open at the bottom. The casing 8 is received at its lower end within the upstanding rim 5 on the base plate 3, the lower part of the rear wall of the casing being received between the lip 1 and the rear portion of the rim 5. Any suitable means 50 may be provided for delivering air into the bottom of the casing 8. Securing elements 9 connect the end members of the rim 5 of the base plate 3 with the end walls of the casing 8.
At its top, the casing 8 is supplied with a depending threaded stud lll. Along the top of the casing, near the front opening l6 thereof, extends a depending flange H. The casing 8 includes a downwardly extended front member l2, defining the upper edge of the front opening H5 in the easing. Attached to the front member l2 of the casing 8, and disposed behind it, is an elongated guide 14, which is L-shaped in vertical transverse section, as Fig. 4 will show. There are vertical, inwardly extended wings l5 on the casing, at the ends of the front opening l6 of the casing.
A grating 26 is provided, and includes vertical end rails ll, connected by horizontal louvers which may have such downward and forward curvature as is desired. The end rails I! of the grating 26 extend upwardly from the baseframe 3 to the front member l2 of the casing 8, and to the flange H. The end rails ll of the grating 26 are disposed between the wings l5 of the easing 8, and are connected thereto by securing elements I9.
A hanger plate 20 i provided, and is supplied withv a transverse, elongated slot 2|, receiving the stud it on the top of the casing 8, the construction being such that the hanger plate can be adjusted forwardly and backwardly. The hanger plate 20 is held against the under-surface of the top of the casing 8 by a nut 22 threaded on the stud ID. The hanger plate 20 is provided at the ends of its forward edge with suspension hooks 23, disposed close to the flange II on the top of the casing 8, and on the intermediate portion of the forward edge of the hanger plate there is a depending, rectangularly disposed stop 24.
A closure plate 25 cooperates with the rear surface of the grating 26, to control the passage of air between the louvers l8, and is mounted at its upper "edge for swinging movement. At its upper edge, the closure plate 25 has a roll bead 21, containing a hinge rod 28, and in two places, the head is cut away, as at 29 in Fig. 5, to receive the suspension hooks 23 on the hanger plate 20, which engage the rod 28, and thus suspend the closure plate for swinging movement. The bead 21 of the closure plate 25 has engagement with the flange H on the upper part of the casing 8. To the rear surface of the closure plate 25 is secured a vertical tubular socket 3|], and in the closure plate there is a horizontally elongated slot 3|, there being an opening 32 in the socket 30, behind the slot. A keeper pin 33 is held frictionally but securely in the socket 30.
A downwardly and rearwardly inclined, plate like operating member 34, is mounted for horizontal sliding movement in the slot 3| of the closure plate 25 and extends through the opening 32 in the socket 30. An inclined slot 35 is formed in the closure plate 34, the keeper pin 33 on the closure plate 25 being received in the slot 35. Near its forward end, the operating member 34 has a depending finger piece 36, located accessibly with respect to the front of the casing 8. At its forward edge, the operating member 34 is supplied with a hook flange 31, slidably engaged with the horizontal part of the guide l4 on the casing 8 and held thereon by engagement With the front member I2 of the casing 8. The construc-. tion is such that the operating member 34 is mounted on the casing 8 for horizontal right line sliding movement.
The closure plate 25 is moved to and from open position, by reciprocating the operating member 34 through the instrumentality of the finger piece 36. Since the keeper pin 33 on the closure plate 25 is received in the inclined slot 35 of the operating member 34, theclosure plate will be swung backwardly and forwardly, from and to closed position with respect to the grating 26, an observation which will be understood readily when Fig. 3 of the drawings is examined. As the closure plate 25 swings backwardly and upwardly, the upper end of the socket 30 comes into contact with the stop 24 on the hanger plate 20, and, thus, the opening movement of the closure plate 25 is limited.
The device forming the subject matter of this application is simple in construction, but will be found thoroughly advantageous for the ends in view Attention is directed to the fact that the article maybe assembled and taken apart readily.
Referring to Fig. 6, should it be desired to mount the casing 8 in the plastering 38 on a wall 39, recourse may be had to an angular anchor 40, secured at 4| to the wall 39, and at 42 to the top of the casing 8..
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:.
