Description

W. F. LAMELA ELECTRIC CABLE ATTORNEYS Feb. 4, 1941.
Passau Feb. 4, 194i UITED STATES PATENT ori-ica ELEUI'BIC CABLE poration of New Jersey Application .my zs, ma, sensi No. zzrssz 5Clalml.
'I'his invention is directed to electric cables, both single and multi-conductor, and has for one of its objects the provision of a cable which is highly fire-resistant and at the same time moisture-resistant, well adapted for use inside buildings, power houses, on ships, etc.
In the accompanying drawing:
Fig. 1 shows a single conductor cable constructed in accordance with my invention; and
Fig. 2 ls a cross section through a multi-conductor'cable embodying my invention.-
Referring to the drawing in detail and ilrst of all to Fig. 1: 2 designates the cable conductor. Immediately about the conductor I apply abbestos rovings 4. This layer is saturated with fiameproof compound. This compound may be made, for example, by mixing zinc oxide and calcium carbonate with benzine as the dispersing medium. This compound is water insoluble, non-conductive and will not decompose under heat or fire to leave a conducting path of carbon, and will not decomposeor react in any way to form a conducting medium.
About the asbestos 4 I apply glass wool 6, preferably in the form of a serving of glass rovings. 'I'his serving is saturated with a ilameproof compound similar to the compound with which the asbestos 4 is saturated.
Over the glass layer 6 I provide another layer of asbestos 8 saturated with flameproof material.
About the asbestos layer 8 I apply a tape Il consisting of a polymerized vinyl halide plasticized by a substantially non-volatile solvent and frictloned into cotton sheeting. About this tape l0 I apply a wall l2 of a polymerized vinyl halide. The surface of this wall is painted with aluminum paint i4. An aluminum braid Il is applied over the paint lli. The surface of this braid is painted with aluminum paint.
The wall I2 is molstureproof but in the event of injury to this wall the cable will still be protected by the flameproof compound with which the asbestos layers 4 and l and the glass 6 are saturated, this compound not only rendering these materials flameproof but moistureproof as well. In addition this compound acts as a binder.
'I'he construction illustrated in Fig. 2 is a multi-conductor cable. The conductors of this embodiment of my invention are designated Il. Asbestos rovings 20 saturated with a flameproof compound are applied about each conductor. The compound employed is the same as referred to in connection with Fig. 1.
About the asbestos layer 20 of each conductor I apply glass wool 22, preferably servings oi.' glass rovings also saturated with ilameproof compound. About the glass layer 22 I apply asbestos rovings 24 also saturated with ameproof compound.
These conductors are then cabled over a center of asbestos .2l treated with the ilameproof compound. Dry asbestos fillers 2B treated with flameproof compound are then added to provide an assembly which is round in cross section.
About this assembly I provide a wall or layer 30 of asbestos, saturated with the tiameproof compound and about this asbestos I apply a tape 32 similar to the tape I0 of Fig. 1, and over this tape a polymerized vinyl halide wall 34 is applied which is painted with aluminum paint. An aluminum braid 38 is applied about the exteriioof the cable and painted with aluminum pa n It will be seen from all of the foregoing that I have provided acable construction which is highly fire-resistant and at the same time moisture-resistant, rthe fiameproof compound, as above pointed out, being of such a nature that it will not decompose under the influence of heat or nre to leave a conducting path of carbon, and will not decompose or react to form a conducting medium.
It is to be understood that changes may be made in the details of construction and arrangement of parts herein described and illustrated withinthe purview of my invention.
What I claim is:
1. An electric cable comprising in combination an electric conductor. asbestos layers and an intermediate layer of glass wool surrounding said conductor, said layers being saturated with a water insoluble, non-conductive ilameproof compound incapable of being decomposed to a conductive medium, a tape comprising a polymerized vinyl halide about the outer layer of asbestos, a polymerized vinyl halide layer about said tape, and an outer sheath about said last last mentioned layer.
2. An electric cable comprising in combination an electric conductor, layers of asbestos rovings and an intermediate layer of glass wool surrounding said conductor, said layers being saturated with a water insoluble, non-conductive iiameproof compound incapable of being recomposed to a conducting medium, a tape comprising fabric nlled with a plasticlzed polymerized vinyl halide about the outer asbestos layer, a
polymerized vinyl halide layer about said tape. and an outer metallic sheath.
3. An electric cable comprising in combination an electric conductor, asbestos layers and an intermediate glass wool layer, said layers being saturated with a water insoluble ilameproo't compound incapable of decomposing under heat or tire to form a conducting path of carbon. said layers surrounding said conductor, 'a polymerized vinyl halide layer surrounding said saturated layers, and an outer sheath about the vinyl halide layer.
4. An electric cable comprising in combination a plurality of electric conductors, each surrounded with asbestos layers and an intermediste glass wool layer, said layers being saturated with a non-conductive, water insoluble flameproof compound incapable of being decomposed to a conducting medium, llers of asbestos in the spaces between said conductors, an asbestos layer saturated with a non-conductive,
water insoluble ilameprooi compound enclosing said assembly, and a polymerized vinyl halide layer surroundinz the last mentioned asbestos layer.
5. An electric cable comprising in combination a plurality of electric conductors, each surrounded with layers of asbestos rovinss and an intermediate glass wool layer, said layers being saturated with a nonconductive,. water insoluble ilameproof compound incapable oi beins decomposed to a conducting medium; illlers of asbestos saturated with nameproot compound similar to the ilrst mentioned compound in the spaces between said conductors, an asbestos layer saturated with tiameprooi compound similar to the tlrst mentioned compound enclosing said assembly, a tape iilled with a polymerized vinyl halide surrounding the last mentioned asbestos layer. and a polymerized vinyl halide layer about said tape.
