This invention relates to typewriting machines, adding machines, accounting machines and machines of this general class in which records are typed or imprinted on record sheets and more particularly to devices for holding rolls of sheet material during the use of said material in such machines.
The primary objects of the invention are to improve the construction and mode of operation of roll holders for holding rolls of sheet material in machines of the above class and to provide a roll holding device which is simple in construction and inexpensive to manufacture, which may be quickly and easily attached to and detached from a machine and which is constructed to enable rolls of sheet material readily to be applied to the holder and to be removed therefrom.
Another object of the invention is to produce a roll holding device for attachment to machines of the above type having novel and improved means for adjusting axially the position of the rolls with relation to the sheet supporting platen.
The invention is particularly designed for application to a typewriting machine of the Elliott Fisher type to hold audit sheet rolls, and is shown in this application as embodied in a form especially adapted for such machines. It is t be understood, however, that the invention is not limited to the particular form thereof illustrated in this application but that certain features thereof may be embodied in other forms and that certain features may be applied to other types of machines.
The invention will be clearly understood from an the accompanying drawing illustrating the invention in its preferred form and the following detailed description of the construction therein shown.

In the form of the invention shown in the drawing, the roll holder is particularly constructed to be applied to the platen frame of a typewriting machine of the Elliott Fisher type. An endless work sheet holding and feeding tape 8 overlies the platen at the right hand side of the machine and is provided with a series of studs for engaging in openings in a work sheet such as that in- 5 dicated at 9. -This tape passes, at the forward end of the platen, about a wheel l9 mounted on the inner end of a shaft I2 journaled in a sleeve 14 secured in an opening in the right hand side rail by means of nuts l6 and I8 threaded on the sleeve. A knurled hand wheel or disk 20 is mounted on the outer end of the shaft l2 and is secured in place by means of a screw 22. The
hand wheel is connected to rotate with the shaft so that the shaft may be rotated by the rotation of the hand wheel by means of a pin 24 projecting radially from the shaft, the ends of which engage in recesses 26 in the inner end of the hub of the hand wheel.
The platen frame and platen illustrated in the drawing have substantially the same construction, arrangement and mode of operation as the corresponding parts of the machine illustrated and described in the patent to Fcothorap No. 1,904,127, dated April 18, 1933. The work holding and feeding tape and the mechanisms for supporting the tape and for moving the tape manually are similar to the corresponding mechanisms shown and described in the patent to Foothorap No. 1,730,566, dated October 8, 1929. 3
The roll holder comprises a trough indicated as a whole at 28. The trough is provided with front and rear side walls 30 and 32, a bottom wall 33 and with end walls 34. The trough is preferably cut from a single piece of sheet metal 35 and is shaped into the form shown by stamping operations. The end walls are turned at substantially right angles to the side and bottom walls to positions inside these walls and are each connected with the bottom wall as at 36. The forward and rear portions of each end wall are preferably bent inwardly as indicated at 38.
The trough is preferably applied to the front end of the platen frame in the position shown in the drawing with the end walls 34 located beneath the side rails 2 of the platen frame and engaging the under surfaces of said rails and with the forward wall 39, which extends some distance above the rear wall, in engagement with the front end surfaces of the side rails. The
length of the trough is preferably such that, when applied to thep-laten in the position shown, the outer surfaces of the end walls are. substantially flush with the outer surfaces of the side rails.
The trough is detachably suspended from the side rails 2 of the platen frame in the position shown. The left hand end of the trough is suspended from the corresponding side rail by means of a hanger plate 40 secured. to said side rail by means of a hand screw 42 passing through an opening in the plate and threaded into the side rail. This hand screw is provided with a shoulder or flange 44 for engagement with the plate 40 toclamp the same against the outer face of the side rail and with a knurled head 46 by which the screw may be operated.
The plate 40 is formed with an opening in which engages a .pin 41 secured in the corresponding end wall 34 of the trough to support the left hand end of the trough on the plate.
The right hand end of the trough is suspended from the corresponding side rail of the platen frame by means of a plate 48 similar to the plate 40. The plate 48 is provided with an opening of suitable size to receive the sleeve I4 and the plate is applied over the sleeve and secured to the right hand side rail by means of the nut 18. The plate 48 is also provided with an opening to receive a pin 56 secured in the corresponding end wall of the trough to support the end of the trough. The trough is thus suspended from the forward ends of the rails 2 by means of the hanger plates 40 and 48 and is held from angular movement about the axis of the pins 4'! and 50 by the contact of the end walls and the rear wall of the trough with the under surfaces of the side rails.
In the operation of the roll holder, a roll 52 of sheet material is placed in the trough 28 as shown and the sheet is drawn back over the platen into position to type a record thereon, the contact of the roll with the trough acting to retard frictionally the rotation of the roll. In order to hold .the roll axially in the desired position in the trough, spring clips are mounted on the trough and arranged to engage the ends of the roll. These spring clips are each provided with a body portion 54 arranged to span the front and rear walls of the trough and with down-turned end portions 56 arranged to extend downwardly along the front and rear Walls of the trough and to engage the said walls with a yielding pressure to hold the clips in position. Each clip is formed with a projection 58 extending downwardly from the body portion to engage one end of the roll.
The spring clips are thus arranged for adjustment longitudinally of the trough to adjust the position of the roll axially and the position of the sheet laterally of the platen.
The trough may be quickly and easily removed from the platen by loosening the screw 42 sufficiently .to enable the lower end of the hanger plate 40 to be moved away from the corresponding side rail to disengage the pin 41 from the opening in said plate and then moving the trough endwise to disengage the pin 50 from the opening in the hanger plate 48. The trough may be just as readily attached to the platen frame by a reverse operation.
The pins 41 and 50 removably engaging respectively in the openings in the hanger plates 4s and .48 constitute a simple and efficient means for suspending the trough upon the side rails of the platen frame. This construction, while securely supporting the trough upon the platen frame, enables the trough to be conveniently detached from said frame by simple manipulations. The spring clips constitute a simple and readily adjusted means for locating the roll of sheet material axially of the trough and the sheet resting on the platen laterally of the platen.
Having explained the nature and object of the invention and having specifically described a construction embodying the invention in its preferred form, what is claimed is:
1. In a record making machine, a platen frame, a device secured to the platen frame for supporting a roll holding device, a roll holding device suspended from the platen frame and a pin projecting from one of said devices and removably engaging in an opening in the other device to detachably support the roll holding device and arranged to be disengaged from said opening :by'a relative movement of said devices axial-1y of the pin the roll holding device engaging the platen frame to hold the same from angular movement.
2. In a record making machine a platen frame comprising substantially parallel spaced side rails, a trough stamped from sheet metal and having integral bottom and side walls, devices attached to the ends of the trough for suspending the trough, hangers secured respectively to the side rails of said frame and removably engaging said devices for detachably supporting the trough on the frame and means for holding the trough from tilting movement.
3. In a record making machine, a platen frame comprising substantially parallel spaced side rails, a trough for holding a roll of sheet material arranged to support a roll of said material by the engagement of .the periphery of the roll with the bottom of the trough and supported on said frame and held from tilting movement with relation thereto, hangers detachably secured respectively to the side rails of said frame and means on the trough removably engaging the hangers to suspend detachably the trough on the frame.
4. In a record making machine, a platen frame, a roll holder for receiving rolls of sheet material to support the same on the machine, means for supporting the holder on the frame and a pin at each end of the holder for removably engaging an opening in the supporting means to detachably suspend the holder from the platen frame, the holder engaging the frame to hold the same from angular movement about said pins.
5. In a record making machine, a support, spaced hanger members secured to said support, a roll holding member for receiving rolls of sheet material, projections at the ends of said roll holding member for removably engaging in openings in the hanger members and means for movably attaching one of the hanger members to said support to enable the latter member to be moved laterally with relation to the support to disengage the corresponding projection on the roll holding member from the opening therein.
6. In a record making machine, a platen frame having substantially parallel spaced side rails, a trough for holding rolls of sheet material suspended detachably from said side rails and located upon the under sides thereof, supporting means including coaxial studs at the respective ends of the trough for removably securing the trough to said side rails and means on the trough for engaging the under side of at least one of said rails to hold the trough from pivotal movement about the axis of said studs.
