UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH HAMBITZER, OF GREEN BAY WISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF OF HIS RIGHT TO WALTER GABSWELL, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN TEA-KETTLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 222,993, dated December 30, 1879 application filed May 13, 1879.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, J osErH HAMBITZER, of Green Bay, in the county of Brown and State of WViseonsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tea Kettles and similar vessels; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to tea-kettles and other vessels usually made of tin and provided with a cover; and the nature of my invention consists in the combination, in such tea-kettle or vessel, of the top, having a rim with interior copper lining, and the cover, having a ring with exterior copper lining, all constructed as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the annexed drawings, which fully illustrate my invention, Figure 1 is a plan view of my invention with the cover thrown back, and Pi g. 2 is a central vertical section of the same taken on the line a .r.
A represents the top of a tea-kettle or other vessel made of tin and provided with a rim, B, around the opening in which the cover is to be inserted. This rim B may be stamped or otherwise formed of one piece with the top, or it may be made separate and soldered or otherwise fastened to the top.
0 represents the cover, which is provided with the ring D to fit in the rim B. This cover may be made either loose or hinged, and when hinged the hinge may be arranged either on the inside or outside, as may be deemed most desirable in the manufacture.
The rim B on the kettle-top A is provided with an interior lining, a, of copper, which lining is turned outward over the edge of the rim and over a wire, I), placed on said edge to make the rim strong and durable. The ring D of the cover 0 is also provided with a similar copper lining, d, which is turned over the flange e of the cover, as shown.
F is the hinge, soldered to the inside of the cover, passing through a slot in the ring D", and encircling a part of the wire I), at which point the copper lining a is cut out for that purpose.
It will be seen that-when the lid or cover G is closed there is no tin in contact with tin, but the linings a and d are close against each other. This construction allows the cover to be opened and closed freely and easily without scalding the hands.
The action of steam and water on tin against tin makes it difficult to open and close the cover; but this is obviated by the use of the linings, and all wear and tear on the tin are prevented.
Liningsof other metals or materials other than tin may be used, perhaps, if desired; but I prefer to use copper for these linings, as I have found it admirably adapted for the purpose.
The rim B may be made in one piece with cover, or added and soldered on it. The copper or brass lining may be made separately, (either spun in copper or cast in brass,) so that the ring of the lid will fit the ring for the rim at the opening and he soldered on by the workman.
I am aware that it is not new to apply noncorrosive metal strips in the cover-opening of a tea-kettle and on the edge of the cover, and I do not claim such, broadly, as my invention.
-Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, in a tea-kettle or other vessel made of tin, of the top A, having rim B, with interior copper lining a, and the cover (J, having ring D, with exterior copper lining d, substantially as and for the purposes here in set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as w my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH HAMBITZEB.
