Description

Dec. 24, 1940. J. A. HOFF PAINTBRUSH HANGER AND REST Filed June 19, 1940 Inventor "urncy Patented Dec. 24, 1940 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2 Claims.
This invention relates to a paintbrush hanger and rest, the general object of the invention being to provide a clamp for fitting over an edge portion of a paint bucket with a rod adjustably carried 5 by the clamp so that it can be placed in a position where it will extend over a part of the bucket to support a paintbrush out of the paint in the bucket and with any paint dripping from the brush dropping into the bucket.
10 This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawing wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
20 Figure 1 is a sectional view through a paint bucket showing the invention in use in supporting a brush in the bucket.
Figure 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is an edge view of the device removed from the bucket and showing the supporting rod in one position in full lines and in operative position in dotted lines.
Figure 4 is a view taken toward the inner side of the clamping member.
Figure 5 is a view looking toward the outer side of the clamping member with the rod in depending position.
Figure 6 is a section on the line 6-6 of Figure 5, with the rod removed.
As shown in these views, the device comprises a clamp A which is formed of a substantially U- shaped plate I having a substantially semi-spherical part 2 pressed outwardly therefrom which forms a recess on the inner side of the plate and 40 a vertically arranged slot 3 is formed in this pressed out part with the slot extending vertically from a point adjacent the top of the pressed out part to a point adjacent the central. portion thereof. The plate i is formed with a rolled or 45 tubular upper part l from which depends a straight part 5 which forms a jaw for cooperation with the jaw formed by the plate I, for fitting over an edge portion of a paint bucket such as shown at B in Figures 1 and 2, it being understood that the 50 member A is of suifioient resiliency to make the jaw forming parts I and 5 yield or move apart when the device is forcibly pressed upon the edge part of the bucket and to grip the bucket with sufficient force to prevent it from being easily removed. A notch 1 is formed in the top of the device A and passes through the parts I and 5 and the roll 4. A rod 8 has a hook 9 at one end which terminates in a ball ID, the part adjacent the ball passing through the slot 3 with the ball located in the recess formed by the part 2. Thus 5 the rod is movably connected with the plate I so that it can be moved from a depending position as shown in full lines in Figure 3 to the position shown in dotted lines in Figure 3 and in full lines in Figure 1 with a part of the rod passing through 10 the notch I so that this notch and the engagement of the ball end of the rod with the upper part of the slot 3 will hold the major portion of the rod extending straight across a part of the bucket so as to support a paintbrush C or the like away from the side part of the bucket but in a position where the paint dripping off the brush will fall into the bucket.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of the invention will be readily apparent.
It is to be understood that changes may be made in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A device for supporting a brush from a bucket comprising a clamp including a top portion and a pair of depending jaw members, said clamp fitting over a portion of the upper edge of a bucket with the top part of the clamp extending across said portion of the upper edge, a substantially semi-spherical projection on the outer face of the jaw member which engages the outer Wall of the bucket, said projection having a vertical slot therein extending from a point adjacent its center to a point adjacent its upper portion and the top of the clamp having a notch therein, a rod having a hook end terminating in a ball, the ball being located in the space formed by the semi-spherical projection with a part of the hook portion adjacent the ball passing through the slot, the rod depending from the projection when the part adjacent the ball is located in the lower end of the slot, and the rod extending partly across the bucket, when in brush holding position with a portion of the hook part of the rod passing through the notch in the top of the clamp and the ball in the upper portion of the space formed by the semi-spherical enlargement.
2. A device for holding a brush on a bucket comprising a plate having a substantially semispherical projection pressed outwardly therefrom and said projection having a vertically arranged slot therein extending from a point adjacent the center of the projection to a point adjacent the top thereof, the top of the plate being rolled to provide a horizontally extending tubular portion, a jaw forming member extending from the tubular portion, the tubular portion, the plate and the jaw forming member forming a clamp for fitting over 10 a portion of the upper edge of a bucket and said
