Y BY LEON LQ L. L. MACKOWSKI ANCHOR FOR INSERT PUMPS Filed March v11. 1938 Patented Dec. 101, 1940 UNQLfSTATE r- Nonoaroamsan'r roms leonilsltackowski, Bradford, la.,.assignorto Oil A Well Supply Company, Dallas, Tex., a corporation'of New Jersey v"Appllcation March 11,
-, IClaim.
'I'his invention 'relates-teau anchor means for an insert pux'np for oil "wells: An insert pump is adapted to be inserted -within a=string of tubing installed within awell casing and is usually provided with means to locate the pump at any k-desired depth within the tubing. Such means as have heretofore been provided for locating the pump Within Athe tubing is illustrated by the invention described and claimed in Mack Patent No. 1,722,102 issued July 23, 1929,wherein a packing member is expanded into sealing relation with the inner surface of the` tubing by means operated by the axial rotation of the sucker rods suspendingly supportingv the said insert pump within the tubing, the said means operating also to provide a frictional engagement or gripping of the inner surface of the tubing at a point below the seal which functions to carry the weight of the said insert pump. One of the disadvantageous features ofthe particular means described and claimed in' said Patent No. 1,722,102 is that during operation of the insert pump after being so located by the means provided in a'ccrdance with this patent the motion of the 25 plunger tends to dislodge the gripping means and the packer seal Athereby becomes broken, necessitating relocating Vand resealing of the said pump by themeans provided. ,j
One of the objects of the preset invention is to provide an anchor means adapted to be dependingly supported lbelow the packer means which will operate to restrain the dislodging of the gripping and sealing means provided for 1ocating the pumpin the tubing. Another object 35v is to provide means adapted to be attached to the lower end of the plunger barrel of the insert pump which will operate to restrain axial movement of the barrel after locating the pump at the desired depth withoutunduly interfering with axial movement of the `tubing while inserting, withdrawing, seating or relocating the pump within the well. VOther objects and advantages will be apparent as the invention is more .fully disclosed.
In accordance with these objects, I have devised a frictional spring anchorand means to dependingly support thesamefromy the packer sealing on the area between the-bottomof the insert pump and the string of tubing, of which 50 the following taken in connection with the drawl ing is a full andy complete disclosure.
In the drawing, Fig. lis a side elevational view of the present invention in combination with the invention of said priorv patent 'and ready for in- -sertion into tubing extending within a well casissaserm Nq'. 195,394 (o1. 16s-1) ing. Fig-2 isa sectional View of the combinationillustrated in Fig. Las it appears located in operative position within tubing extending within a well casing. Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view of one feature of vthe'present invention; and Fig. 5 (is a section along plane l-4 of Fig. 2.
- Referring to thek drawing (Figs. 1 and 2),v the structure below line A-A illustrates the present invention, whereas the structure above illustrates the invention of said prior Patent No. 10 1,722,102, in combinationwith which the present invention is utilized. The structure above line A-A has been identified as to its main operating parts by suitable legends. For better understanding of the same, reference should be made 15 to the description and drawingsof the said patent.
Briey stated, the present invention consists in dependingly supporting frictional spring anchor means B from the bottom of coupling member 6 20 of the prior art structure above line A-A, known in the art as a cage slip assembly, .by swivel joint means J, and in the specic structure ofthe swivel joint means J and the anchor means B. Swivel joint means J is essential to provide for the unlocking and locking of the cage slip assembly above line A-A when locating or relocating the assembly within the tubing T disposed within well casing C.l .without axial disturbance or dislocation of the anchor means B.
The specific structure of swivel joint J is illustrated in Fig. 3. The bottom end of coupling member l is threaded and a collar 'I is threaded thereon and pins l securely hold the same against rotation to provide an annular shoulder for lo'ose 35 coupling member l which is provided with a complementary annular shoulder lli adapted to engage the shoulder formed by collar 1 on coupling I. An anti-friction washer Il is interposed between the engaging shoulders to facilitate the 40 axial rotation of coupling i relative to coupling 0. 'Ihe inner surface of the bottom end of loose coupling member I is threaded `for the threaded engagement therewith of the threadedfend of length of pipe I2. A coupling 'I3 connects a 45 second length of pipe Il with pipe i2 forming at the same time an annular shoulder which is utilized as a stop for the means B as will be hereinafter described. r
With the structure illustrated in Fig. 3 it may 50 be noted that the cage slip assembly structurev above line A-A may be rotated axially to operate the gripping and sealing means oi the assembly without transmission of this rotating movement to pipe l2 and the assembly below line A-A. At 55 the same time the assembly below line A--Ais dependingly supported from coupling member I o1 the assembly above line AA.
Frictional spring anchor means B comprises a plurality of arcuate spring members B, the one end of each member being attached by means of screw"s-|.5 to collar` I6 which is secured to the pipe I4 by means of three screws I1 uniformly spaced around the collar I6. The opposite end of each spring member Bis centrally located in a longitudinal recessed section of one section of a longitudinally split collar I8 and is held in position in the recess by rivets I9. The several sections of the split ycollar I8 are secured around an extension length of pipe 20 Joined to pipe il by coupling 2l in such manner as to i'rictionally engage the surface of pipe 20 with the/springs B bowed outwardly sumciently to frictionally engage the innerside walls of well tubing T. The arrangement of springs B permits vertical movement relative to the string of tubing incident to the locating, relocating, insertion or withdrawal of the plunger barrel of the pump within T, but
the frictional engagement of springs B against.`
the side wall tubing T anchors the plunger barrel of the insert pump against vertical up and down movements tending to break the seal provided by sealing means S, during operation of the said insert numn.
From the above description and drawing it is apparent that many modiiications and adaptations may be made in the present invention without departure from the nature and scope as may be included within the following claim.
What I claim is:
In combination, a string of tubing for supporting an insert pump, expansible andcontractible packer means to seal the insert pump tubing to the inner wall of said tubing and anchor means dependingly and rotatably supported by and from said packer means to permit rotation of said packer means without dislodgement of said anchor means, said anchor means comprising a plurality oi' arcuate spring members, each having one end `secured to a collar member detachably secured to a length of pipe dependingly supported from the end of said packer by a connection allowing relatively free rotation of the packer about its axis, the opposite ends of the said spring members each being secured to arsegment of a split collar member, and means to assemble the several said segments together and tohold the same in frictionalengagement with the said dependingly supported length of tubing.
