IMPROVEMENT IN WIND-ENGINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 229,411, dated December 9, 1879; application filed May 9, 1879. v
To all whom it may concern:
' Be it known that I, SEWARD LANE, of Fletcher, in the county of Miami and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful I Improvements in Wind-Engines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear,
and exact description of. the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The figure in the drawing is a perspective of a windmill embodying the improvements of my invention. This invention has relation to windmills,"
and it consists of certain improvements inthe construction of the same, hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out I in the claim.
In the accompanyingdrawing, similar let ters of reference marked thereon indicate like parts of the invention. A is a'frame-work of suitable height, upon which is mounted the revolving frame B; provided with two standards, C and D, in which is journaled a crank-shaft, E. A brace, F, is
secured to the frame B, and extends outward,
forming the support for the governor G. The
forward end of the crank-shaft E terminates in a solid disk, H, permanently'secured to the end of said shaft. This disk H is provided with a series of radial arms, I, upon which are loosely journaled a series of fans, K, having small cranks i, all the cranks i being connected by the rods l, so as to cause the fans K to move simultaneously.
Two of the fans K K are each provided with a second crank, & i set at a right angle to the crank 71, and connected to a cross-head, L, by the connecting-rods a and n; This cross-head L has a pair of guide-rods, m m, attached to it, and passing, through the disk H, thus allowing an independent to-and-fro motion to the cross-head, at the same time causing it to revolve with the disk H.
A con11ecting-rod,e,is attached to the crosshead L and extends to the governor-rod g, carrying the governor Gr.
A flexible cord, N, attached to the governor; rod g, passes through a guide, a, and extends downward, so as to come within reach of the hand.
The operation of the device is as follows: The weight g on the governor-rod g keeps it perpendicular; and in this position the connecting-rod eholdsthe fans in a position to be acted upon by the wind, causing them to connects and braces the outer ends of the,
radial arms I, keeping them from springing.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the UnitedStates,
In a wind mill or engine, he revolving frame B having standards 0 D, in which is mounted the crank-shaft E, provided with the solid disk H, having radial arms I, on which are secured the pivoted fans K, having cranks '5 and rods Z,in combination with the governor Gr, having weight g, and the connecting-rod e, cross-head L, and connecting-rods 'n n attaching it to the cranks '5 i substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 28th day of April, 1879. 1 I
SEWARD LANE.
