This invention relates to wire drawing apparatus and more particularly to an improved die box and die holder and means for positioning and adjusting the 'die holder in the box.
In drawing wire it is usual to so dispose the axis of the die relative to the direction of movement of the wire therethro-ugh that 'a cast or bend is imparted to the wire as it passes through the die. Different types of wire may require a 10 different angular position of the die to give the desired cast and in some instances it may be desired to impart more cast than at others.
It is, therefore, among the objects of my invention to provide an extremely simple and effective means for supporting a die holder in a die box whereby any desired degree of tilt may be imparted to the die and whereby the die is rigidly held in position during operation.
Other objects of my invention include: the provision of adjustable abutment means for taking the load imposed upon the die holder by the movement of the wire through the die, which means are readily adjustable and always provide a firm and even support for the die holder; the provision of means for varying the vertical position of the die holder which co-act with but are independent of the cast regulating mechanism; the provision of a die box which permits the die holder to be quickly and easily removed and replaced; and the provision of a simple, rugged, easily adjusted, economically manufactured die box and holder for wire drawing machines.
The above and other objects of my invention will appear from the following description of a preferred form thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure l is a plan view of our die box and holdor assembly, a section of wire being illustrated extending through the die.
Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary vertical cross-sectional view taken on line 2--2 of Figure 1.

The die holder is generally indicated at H and In the drawing a water cooled die holder is shown having a cooling water inlet 9 and outlet II]. It will be under- 10 stood, however, that any suitable type of die holder may be employed. The die Ii, through which the wire is drawn, is suitably supported in the holder H, preferably with its axis perpendicular to the end face !2 of the holder. A fixed flange'l3 extends out from the end face 52 and is formed with a vertical cylindrical slot M therein. This slot I4 is open on one side, as seen in Figure 5, to permit the ball headed adjusting screw E5 to have limited universal movement therein. The ball portion l5 of the screw 95 is disposed in the slot M and an adjustable die supporting screw 16 has threadedengagement with the cap I! secured to the die box above the top of the slot 14. The screw I 5 has threaded ellgagement with the end wall 4 and is disposed substantially midway between the top and bottom of the die box B.
The opposite side of the end face I2 of the die holder H from the flange I3 is formed with slide surfaces [8 and I9 which support and guide the sliding flange 20. A removable plate 28, secured to the side of the die holder H by screws 22, is installed after the sliding flange 20 is placed in position and prevents the slide 26 from becoming detached from the die holder. A vertically extending cylindrical groove or slot 23, similar to slot :4, is formed in the sliding flange member 20 and the ball heads 24 and 25 of the screws 24 and 25 are disposed in the slot 23. These two screws 24 and 25 are arranged in Vertical alignment and have threaded engagement through the end wall 4 of the die box B. A die supporting screw 26 passes through the cap 217,
which is secured to and movable with the slide 20, and rests upon the ball end 24 of the screw 24. a
As is clearly seen in Figures 2 and 3, the screws I5, 24 and 25 are arranged in triangular relation. The weight of the die holder H is carried by the screws l6 and 26 and a locking screw 28 is threaded through a cross bar 29 and abuts at its lower end against the top surface of the holder H. The bar 29 passes through yokes 3t and 3| on the sides of the box 20 and when the screw 23 is tightened down against the top of the die adapted to be disposed in said die box, said die holder H the bar 29 will be pushed upwardly against the yokes 3t! and El and the die holder H will be locked against upward movement in the box B.
By adjusting the screws I6 and 26 the vertical position of the die holder and die may be adjusted and by changing the positions of the three screws i5, 24 and 25 the axis of the die H can be tilted to any desired degree in any direction. The screws !5, 24 and 25 are provided with socket heads, such as seen at 25" in Figure 4, to accommodate a suitable adjusting wrench.
As the position of the die holder is adjusted by the screws E5, 26 and 25 the sliding flange 2B may move transversely. It will be seen that, if the screw i5 remains in a given position, and the screws 24 and 25 are turned inwardly, a swinging movement of the die holder about the ball head l5 will occur. This swinging movement is permitted by the sliding connection between the fiange 2i; and the body of the holder H.
My improved holder construction provides a three-point abutment for the die holder which forms at all times a firm, evenly distributed support for the die holder against the wire drawing force. The screw 28 prevents any jumping or vibrating of the holder during operation and the open bottomed cylindrical slots M and 23 permit the die holder to be removed from the die box simply by removing the screw 28 and bar 29 and then lifting the box vertically to disengage it from the ball ends of the screws [5, 24 and 25.
My improved die box and holder construction permits easy and accurate adjustment of the position of the axis of the die to give the desired cast to the wire. In any adjusted position a firm abutment for the die is automatically obtained against the box end 4 and this firm abutment is automatically obtained due to the. three-point engagement of the holder H with the ball ends of the screws i5, 2 and 25. With my apparatus die holders can be easily and quickly changed without changing the cast of the wireand any necessary adjustments can readily be made.
Although I have described the illustrated embodiment of my invention in considerable detail it will be understood that variations and modif1- cations in the form of the apparatus employed may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention. I do not, therefore, wish to be limited to the particular apparatus shown and described but claim as my invention all forms thereof coming within the scope of the a ended claims.
.I claim:
1. In wire drawing apparatus, a die box and a die holder and means for positioning said holder in said box including walls defining a fixed slot at one end of said holder, a slidable member carried by said holder and having a slot parallel to said fixed slot and movable with said slidable member toward and away from said fixed slot, a single adjustable abutment member carried by said box and having a head disposed in one of said slots, and two adjustable abutment members carried by said box and having heads dis posed in the other slot whereby triangularly arranged abutments are provided between said holder and said box.
2. Wire drawing apparatus including, a die box having a floor and an end wall, a die holder holder having a vertical slot at one end, said slot being disposed on one side of the die axis, a movable flange mounted on said holder for horizontal sliding movement relative thereto, said movable flange having a slot extending parallel to said first named slot and on the opposite side of said die axis therefrom, a single adjusting screw extending through said box end wall and having a head portion disposed in one of said slots, a pair of adjusting screws extending through said end wall and having head portions disposed in the other of said slots, and adjustable support means carried by said die holder for supporting same on said single screw and one of said pair of screws.
3. Wire drawing apparatus including, a die box having a floor and an end wall, a die holder adapted to be disposed in said die box, said die holder having a vertical slot at one end, said slot being disposed on one side of the die axis, a movable flange mounted on said holder for horizontal sliding movement relative thereto, said movable flange having a slot extending parallel to said first named slot and on the opposite side of said die axis therefrom, a single adjusting screw extending through said box end wall and having a head portion disposed in one of said slots, a pair of adjusting screws extending through said end wall and having head portions disposed in the other of said slots, adjustable support means carried by said die holder for supporting same on said single screw and one of said pair of screws, and releasable means coacting with said die box for holding said die holder down with said support means in engagement with said screws.
4. In apparatus of the class described, a die box having an end wall having an aperture through which wire being drawn may pass, three ball headed adjusting screws threaded through said end wall, one of said screws being on one side of the center of said aperture and the other two screws being on the other side of said center, and a die holder in said box having parallel slots at one end thereof, said slots being of circular cross-sectional form and adapted to fit over the ball heads of said screws, the ball head of one of said screws being disposed in one of said slots and the ball head of each of the other two screws being disposed in the other slot.
5. In apparatus of the class described, a die box having an end wall having an aperture through which wire being drawn may pass, three ball headed adjusting screws threaded through said end wall, one of said screws being on one side of the center of said aperture and the other two screws being on the other side of said center, a die holder in said box having parallel slots at one end thereof, said slots being of circular crosssectional form and adapted to fit over the ball heads of said screws, the ball head of one of said screws being disposed in one of said slots and the ball head of each of the other two screws being disposed in the other slot, and adjustable means for supporting said die holder on said screws.

In apparatus of the class described, a die box having an end wall having an aperture through which wire being drawn may pass, three ball headed adjusting screws threaded through said end wall, one of said screws being on one side of the center of said aperture and the other two screws being on the other side oi. said center, a die holder in said box having parallel slots at one end thereof, said slots being of circular crosssectional form and adapted to fit over the ball heads of said screws, the ball head of one of said screws being disposed in one of said slots and the ball head of each of the other two screws being disposed in the other slot, adjustable means for supporting said die holder on said screws, and
means for clamping said holder in position said box.

In apparatus of the class described, a die box having an end wall having an aperture through which wire being drawn may pass, three ball headed adjusting screws threaded through said end wall, one of said screws being on one side of the center of said aperture and the other two screws being on the other side of said center,
