DANIEL T. THOMPSON AND WILLIAM M. GRAY, OF WAYNETOWN, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN DRAG-SAWING MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 222, 102, dated November 25, 1879 application filed September 27, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, DANIEL T. THoMPsoN and WILLIAM M. GRAY, of Waynetown, in the county of Montgomery and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sawing-Machines and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the'annexed drawing, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
The figure of the drawing is a representation of a longitudinal section of our sawingmachine.
The nature of our invention consists in an improved sawing-machine constructed and adapted for operation substantially as hereinafter set forth and claimed.
The object which we have in view is toprovide a machine which will do the work of the ordinary crosscut-saw, either in sawing from the log or tree in the woods or from the drag or cut in the wood-yard, and to enable one man to easily accomplish the work usually performed by several.
Referring by letter to the drawing, A designates the frame of the sawing-machine B, the saw, and O the lever-handle for operating the same.
The mechanism intermediate of the saw and operating-lever consists as follows: D E are two interlneshing gear-wheels arranged upon the shafts F G. H is a pitman between the lever-handle and shaft F, and I is a similar rod, connecting shaft G with a bell-crank lever, L, whereby the saw is operated. M is a guide for the bar N of the saw, and it is pivoted at 0 upon the frame of the machine. 1? is a lever for raising or lowering the saw when required, and, as herein shown, is arranged alongside of the lever 0, so that one person can conveniently operate both levers.
The lever P connects with the saw-guide by rods Q Q, and is also provided with a counter balance, R.
S S are fly-wheels, which are mounted upon one of the shafts of the gear-wheels.
What we claim is- In a drag-sawing machine, the combination of the guide M, pivoted, as shown, with the rods Q, Q, attached one on each side of the pivotal point of guide M, lever P, and cord and Weight R, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that we claim the above we have hereunto subscribed our names in the presence of two witnesses.
DANIEL T. THOMPSON. WILLIAM M. GRAY.
