Description

Nov. 5, 1940. E. w. HILL saw: macono DEVICE Filed Feb. 26, 1940 A'ITORNEY6.
Patented Nov. 5, 1940 stars 6 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in record devices and particularly to a record device wherein the parts are so arranged and separable that a plurality of similar records are obtainable from a single recording operation.
The principal object of this invention is the provision of a record device comprising a base sheet having side fiaps and an end tab whereby certain copying sheets are maintained in proper position during the insertion of the device in the typewriting machine for producing the desired record.
A further object of the present invention is the provision of a record device having a base sheet provided with equally spaced horizontal division and a flap extending along one side of said base sheet, having a series of holes adjacent each of its vertical edges whereby the flap is divided into divisions to register respectively with the divisions of the base sheet, whereby like records will be produced.
Other objects are economy of construction, ease and accuracy of operation, and adaptability for use in producing duplicate records of various types.
With these objects in view, reference will now be had to the drawing wherein:
Figure 1 is a stretch out of a recording device embodying this invention.
Fig. 2 is a diagrammatic vertical sectional View of the device folded and filled, ready to be inserted in the typewriter.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged cross sectional View of the folded device.
Fig. 4 is a plan view of one of the flap divisions detached; and
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the detached flap division positioned on a file post. I
Throughout the several views, like reference characters designate similar parts and the numeral I0 is a sheet of paper, or similar material, vertically perforated at I2 and Hi to form a central base sheet l6 and side flaps I 8 and 2B.
Perforations l2 and I4 are disposed in parallel straight lines thereby forming rectangular base sheet and side flaps, and serving as a bending line between the respective adjacent parts. Since flap l8, as hereinafter set forth, is to be folded over the back of the base sheet and then flap 50 20 is folded over flap I8, it is found convenient to make the width of flap l8 slightly less than the width of the base sheet, to facilitate neat folding.
The base sheet is horizontally lined at 22 to form a series. of divisions 24 of equal vertical width, whereon is adapted to be typewritten, certain records. Each division 2d may be adapted to receive a plurality of typewritten lines one above the other in the usual manner. Some of the records may be of different extent than the others, however, the divisions are of equal width to permit of proper cutting by a compound knife having equally spaced apart cutting blades.
A like vertical series of equally spaced holes 25 is provided adjacent each vertical edge of flap i8, with a hole of each series in register with each division 24 respectively. 'When the flap i8 is foldedto the back of base sheet It, the holes 25 will be over their respective division 2t.
Flap I8 is vertically scored at 26 to facilitate folding along a line halt-way between the two series of holes 25.
A tab 28 scored at Zillto permit bending and perforated at 32 for easy removal of the outer portion 3 of the tab, is provided at the upper end of the base sheet. The inner portion 35 of tab 28 is punched to form holes 38 whereby the base sheet It may be placed on the posts of a file.
This record device is used in conjunction with carbon paper sheets and copy-sheets in the following manner:
A carbon sheet 40 is placed with its back against base sheet 15, then flap i8 is folded against carbon sheet 40. now placed face out, against flap l8, a copy sheet E3 is then positioned over carbon sheet 42, like- Wise another carbon 44 is provided to make an imprint on the rear side of flap 26 which is folded thereagainst.
When the flaps are thus folded with the carbon and copy sheets ther'ebetween, the tab 28 is folded back over flap 2!) to secure all the parts in fixed relation as. the record device is being positioned in the typewriting machine in the usual manner. The desired record, for example, of a freight car is now typed in the first division A carbon sheet 42 2d, a record of another car in the second division,
and so on until all the divisions are utilized.
fllese records 553 are typewritten on the front of the base sheet, the first copy 5860 is made on the back of flap iii, the second copy is produced on copy sheet 53 by carbon 42 and the third copy is made on the back flap 2!! by carbon 44. Other carbons and copy sheets might be placed between sheet :82 and carbon 44 if more copies are desired.
When the device is used for recording freight cars, it is found convenient to allow enough space on each of the divisions 24; to.- make three typewritten lines, however, divisions of various widths might be used to meet the needs of various types of records.
After the typing is completed, the copies and carbons are removed, flap 20 is detached by tearing along the perforated line H, and flap I8 is also removed from the base sheet by tearing along perforations l2. Flap I8 is now out along lines 46 which divide the flap into divisions 48 corresponding respectively to the divisions 24 of the base sheet l6 so that, for instance, the record of the car, noted on division I of the base sheet, will likewise be noted on strip I of flap I8. Each of the strips of flap I8 is folded along line 26 so that holes 25 at its opposite end, are in register to be threaded on the file peg 52 with the record or indicia 50a on the outside. The outer portion 34 of tab 28 is now removed and the base sheet is now placed in a binder with the post thereof positioned through holes 38.
The length of tab 28 is such that when used to maintain the different sheets in proper register, it will be securely held by the typewriter roller until the device is properly positioned to type the first record. After the typing Operation, it is not necessary to have a long tab for filing, therefore, it is torn off as indicated.
The records of the different freight cars of a train are required to be furnished to different departments and it is therefore, necessary that each receive the particular information required for their records. This record device is also adapted for use in various other businesses when copies of the records are desirable to facilitate the bookkeeping.
Since many minor changes might be made in the device without departing from the spirit of the invention, it is desired to be limited only by the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
1. A sheet record device comprising in combination a. base sheet having a series of equal, horizontally disposed divisions extending in parallel relation thereacross; a flap contiguous with one side of said base sheet adapted to be folded over said base sheet, and having a vertically disposed series of holes adjacent its outer edge, a hole of said series being in alignment with each of said divisions of the base sheet; and a tab contiguous with the top edge of the base sheet adapted to be folded over said flap when it is folded over the base sheet.
