ALBERT Gr. MGCOMB, OF COLUMBUS GROVE, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN MALLETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No- 221,930, dated November 25, 1879; application filed May 22, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT Gr. MoOoMB, of Columbus Grove, in the county of Putnam and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mauls and Mallets; and I do hereby declare the follow ing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention,such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to a maul or mallet adapted to be secured to a proper handle; and the novelty consists in the construction and arrangement of parts which go to make resistance, durability, and multiplied operating-faces, and to make the same firm, com pact, and durable, as will be described.
To this end I employ two metal disks, perforated at the center to form the eye for the handle, and having several boltholes, as shown The inner face of each disk is provided with a circumferential flange, which operate in corresponding grooves in sectoral blocks having radial sides. The sectors of wood are cut away to correspond with the eyeorifices in the disks, to form a continuous socket to receive the maul-handle. Bolts secure the disks and sectors of wood together firmly, and the circumferential flange and groove assist in giving a firm security.
The sectors of wood maybe ofsuch form as to form octagonal or polygonal mauls, if desired, and may be arranged so as to present surfaces -of different resisting strength.
The flange may be upon the blocks, and the grooves to correspond be formed by dies in the disks, if preferred.
Circular or rectangular slots are formed in the radial edges of the sectors, which in either form are adapted to receive keys, of wood or metal, to hold the articulating surfaces immovably together.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a vertical section ofmy improved maul, taken through the eye; and Fig. 2, a side elevation, partly in section. Figs. 3 and 4 are modifications of the invention.
Referring to the drawings, A A represent two metal disks, preferably circular in form and provided with central openings, at a, which comprise the eye which receives the handle. (Not shown.) B B represent circumferential flanges upon the inner faces of the disksAA, which flanges operate in corresponding grooves b in wood sectors 0, as shown. These wood sectors are constructed or formed so as to approximately present the longitudinal fibers thereof radial from the eye, and the inner portions are cut away at c to form the eye for the handle. Upon one or both edges of each sector is formed a semicircular or rectangular slot, ac, adapted to receive pins as, as shown.
The disks A embrace the wood sectors, and the whole are secured together by bolts (1, as shown.
