N. PETERS. PHOTO-L THUG UNITED STATES PATENT FFIon.
CHARLES PORTWAY, OF HALSTEAD, COUNTY OF ESSEX, ENGLAND.
IMPROVEMENT iN STOVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 221,861 dated November 15, 1879; application filed July 18, 1879 patented in England, April 12, 1878.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES PORTWAY, of Halstead, in the county of Essex, England, llaNB invented new and useful Improvements in Close Stoves, which improvements are fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the'accompanying drawlugs.
The invention was patented in Great Britain, No. 3,910 for 1877, and sealed April 12, 1878.
The object of the invention is to secure efficicncy in the heating power with economy in the consumption of the fuel employed in close stoves, together with simplicity of construction and facility in use; and it consists in a special construction and mounting of a hinged and sliding door, and in the combination therewith of a slow-combustion grateless close stove, having fire-brick or pottery hearth and linings and passages, as hereinafter described, for the supply of fuel, for the clearing of the ashes, and for the escape of the products of combustion. But that the invention may be the better understood, I will, by the aid of the accompanying drawings, proceed to describe the same.
Figure 1 shows a vertical section of a stove arranged according to my invention. Fig. 2 shows an external side view of the same. Fig. 3 represents a plan view or upper-side view Fig. 4, a horizontal section taken through the line 1 1, Fig. 1; and Fig. 5, adetail, showin g the sliding and hinged door detached.
a a is the body of the stove, which is lined entirely around its side .or vertical surface with fire-clay or pottery-ware b, except at the part b, which indicates the passage for lighting and also for clearing out the ashes. The fire-clay or pottery-ware also forms a solid bottom or hearth, c, on which the coke or other fuel employed rests. The opening 0, for light ing and for raking or clearing. the fuel, is on a level with this bottom or hearth c. This opening b is, however, capable of being securely closed by a close-fitting hinged door or cover, (I, which is also so hung upon its axis or bearing-surfaces d d that when slid or moved sidewise on suchbearing or bearings an opening is capable of being left, in width adjustable at pleasure, to admit more or less air to the ignited fuel in the stove to regulate the extent or speed of combustion and consequent degree of heat emitted. c is the opening for the supply to this stove of the fuel to be consumed, and it will be seen that it is at one side or part of the upper portion of the stove, above the lining I), and that this opening e is also capable of being closed by a closely-fitting cover. 6 is the outlet, for conducting away the smoke and products of combustion in a horizontal direct-ion, at the top part of the stove, and immediately opposite the fuel-opening, so as to conduct the smoke and products of combustion direct to any suitable flue. By this arrangement any sulphurous or other deleterious gases emitted from the fuel, and which might have a tendency to escape into the apartment being heated by such stove on the opening of the feed-door, will be at once drawn or forced to the chimney, and an efficient eco nomical slow-combustion air-heating stove is obtained.
Having thus described my invention and means which 1 adopt in carrying the same into effect, I would have it understood that whatI claim is 1. The close-fitting hinged and sliding door (I, applied as set forth, to be swung and also to be slid laterally upon its bearings, for the purposes described.
2. The close-fitting hinged and laterally slicb ing door (1, in combination with the slow-combustion close stove, made, as described, with the fire-brick or pottery hearth c, linings b, and passages e, b, and g.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
