Description

G. H. GHINNOGK. Can and Cover therefor.
No. 221,667. Patented Nov. 18, I879.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE H. OHINNOOK, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO LEONARD RICHARDSON, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN CANS AND COVERS THEREFOR.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 221,667, dated November 18, 1879; application filed September 3, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE H. GHINNOGK, of Brooklyn, in Kings county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cans and Covers Therefor, of which the following is a specifica tion.
Myinvention consists in the combination of acan-cover having a rim and a strip detachably affixed outside the latter with a canbody provided with an outward offset at some distance below its mouth, a portion extending upward from the outer extremity of the offset and slanting gradually inward to lessen the diameter of the can, and a bead extending outward from the inner end of said incline portion near the mouth of the can, whereby can-tops having strips of dift'erent widths applied to them may be tightly and conveniently secured to cans.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a partly-sectional side View of a can-cover provided with a rim and a (letachably affixed strip according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a partly-sectional side view of a can-body embodying my invention; and Fig. 3is a central vertical section of such a can-body and top secured together. I
Similar letters of referencedesignate corresponding parts in all the figures. A is a eanbody, represented as cylindrical in form, provided with an external offset, a, at some distance below its inouth. From the outer extremity of said offset a. a slanting portiori extends upward and inward, lessening the diameter of the can, and having above it, near the mouth of the can, a head or projee tion, I).
B designates a cover, provided with a rim, 0, adapted to fit over the mouth of the canbody, above the bead-or projection b, and having affixed to the outside of said rim a strip, 0, by means of soft solder, or by means of crimping by bending it over the top of the cover or otherwise. This strip overlaps the can-body to, or nearly to, the external offset, a, and is secured thereto by soft solder to fasten the cover in place and hermetically seal the can.
The external offset, a, extending upward and inward under the rim 0 of the cover, precludes the soft solder employed to secure the strip 0 to thecan-body from coming in contact with the said rim, so as to fasten it to the cover.
It will be seen that by my invention I provide covers with detachably affixed fasteningstrips, which may be made and sold for application to cans made by others, and which will, after the ripping off of the fastening-strips, leave clean and square-edged rims, adapting them foruse without attachment to the body-- '5. e., as loose covers, and which again may have fastening-strips affixed to them.
It willj also be seen that I provide a can whose cover may be readily and expeditiously secured in place without danger of permanently fasteningit, and that covers having strips of different widths may be tightly and conveniently secured to the body of a can, owing to the inclined or slanting portion above the external offset, a.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of a can-cover, having a rim and a strip detachably aflixed outside the latter, with a can-body provided with an outward offset at some distance below its mouth, a portion extending upward from the outer extremity of the offset, and slanting gradually inward to lessen the diameter of the can, and a bead extending outward from the inner end of said incline portion near the mouth of the can, substantially as and for the purpose specitied.
