My invention relates to self-lubricating pitmans and has as one of the principal objects thereof the provision of a pitman equipped with means for supplying lubricant to the roller and 5 cycle head cranks to which the pitman is connected.
Another object of my invention is to provide a pitman of the above described character which is simple in construction, durable in'use, efficient in lo operation and economical in manufacture.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description, appended claims and annexed drawing.
Referring to the drawing wherein like refer- 16 ence characters designate like parts throughout the several views:
Figure 1 is a top plan View of my invention.
Figure 2 is a side elevation partly in section.
Figures 3 and 4 are sectional views taken on the 20 lines 3-3 and 4-4 respectively, of Figure 2.
In practicing my invention as illustrated in the drawing, I provide a pitman, of the wooden type, fashioned with a recess 6 in the upper face and in which is arranged a metallic oil container 'I, the
25 latter being of a relatively narrow elongated formation in plan and extending longitudinally of the pitman.
The container is provided, centrally between its ends, with a partition 8 dividing the container 30 into a pair of compartments 9 of substantially equal size. Each compartment 9 is provided with a filler opening I over which is threaded a detachable closure cap I I whereby the compartment 9 may be filled with a suitable oil. The 35 ends of the pitman are fashioned with roller and cycle head crank bores I2 and I3 respectively and which are adapted to receive roller and cycle head cranks respectively.
The end walls of the container 1, adjacent the bores I2 and I3, are formed with downwardly inclined ports I4 arranged in proximity to the bottom of the compartment and said ports I4 register with downwardly inclined passages I com- (Cl. 'I4-587) municating with the bores I2 and I3, as clearly illustrated in Figure 2 of the drawing, whereby oil from each of the compartments 9 is supplied to the respective cranks.
From the foregoing, it will be apparent that I 5 have provided a simple and efficient form of selflubricating pitman and that the same is so constructed and arranged whereby the compartments can be easily supplied with suitable oil.
It is also. obvious that the invention is not confined to the herein described use therefor as it may be utilized for any purpose to which it is adaptable. It is therefore to be distinctly understood that the invention is not limited to the specific construction as illustrated and described, as the same is only illustrative of the principles of operation, which are capable of extended application in advance forms, and that the invention comprehends all construction within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. In combination with a pitman formed with crank receiving bores and fashioned with a recess between said bores, said pitman provided with inclined straight passages extending downwardly from said recess and communicating directly with said bores, and a container arranged in said recess and fashioned with ports communicating with said passages for supplying lubricant from said container to cranks operating in said bores.
2. In combination with a pitman formed with crank receiving bores and fashioned with a recess between said bores, said pitman provided with inclined straight passages extending downwardly from said recess and communicating directly with said bores, and a container arranged in said recess and provided with compartments each having a port communicating with one of said passages for supplying a lubricant from said 40 container to cranks operating in said bores.
