Description

W. BROWN ct. l, 1940.
HO SE REEL Filed sept, 25. 1939 ATTOR N EYS Patented Oct. 1, 1940 UNITED STATES PATENT oFFicE 2 Claims.
The invention relates to a hose reel and more especially to a sunken adjustable hose reel.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a reel of this character wherein the same is normally below the surface of the foundation and confined within a housing or cell so that it will be out of the Way and can be raised to a workable position so that the hose carried thereby can be extended for service, the hose being for water or air, and when the reel is in a sunken position it will be out o-f the way and protected from Weather elements as well as the hose carried thereby.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a reel of this character wherein the construction thereof is novel in its entirety in that the water or air conduit is built within the reel and has a coupling for the hose for the attachment thereto.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a reel of this character, which is simple in its construction, thoroughly reliable and eiiicient in operation, susceptible of easy manipulation, capable of being concealed from View when inactive, and inexpensive to manufacture and install.
With these and other objects in View, the invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described in detail, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which discloses the preferred embodiment of the invention and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional View through a housing or cell for accommodating the reel constructed in accordance with the invention, the reel being shown by full lines in a sunken position and by dotted lines in a raised or operative position.
Figure 2 is a top plan view.
Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary vertical sectional view through the reel.
Figure 4 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view through a joint built into the reel.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several Views in the drawing.
Referring to the drawing in detail, A designates a walled housing open at its top and closed at its bottom constituting a well or compartment I0 interiorly thereof. This housing A is preferably sunken in a foundation so that its open top will be substantially flush with the level of surface of said foundation. The housing A is preferably made from cementitious material molded or otherwise formed for creating the compartment I0 accessible through the open topf.
Attached to one vertical wall of the housing 5 A by hinges II is a closure I2 in the form of a door section, its pintle or pivot I3 being a pipe section from which extends an elbow I4 coupled with the axle I5 of a hosereel, the axle 10 I5 being a pipe section.
The axle I5 is mounted in supports I6 for the reel which includes the end heads II and a cylindrical body I8, the latter being united with the heads Il and upon this body between the 15 heads is adapted to be Wound and unwound a flexible hose I9 for water or air. The hose is detachably coupled with an outlet branch 20 extending from the axle I5 through a clearance in the body I8 of said reel.
The supports I6 for the reel are fixed to the closure I2 to move therewith so that when the closure is lowered into the compartment I0 the reel with the supports I5 moves therewith. Any suitable cover (not shown) can be placed over 25 the open top of the housing A to exclude weather elements therefrom when the hose reel is conned within the compartment Ill. The closure I2 is susceptible of vertical swinging movement to bring the same into the plane of the open top 30 of the housing A and in this position will be held releasably latched by a spring latch 2I built with the housing A.
The axle I5 is separably joined with the elbow Ill through the medium of a fluidtight coupling 22 including a packing gland 23 therein to eliminate leakage at this point.
The pipe section I3 includes a cutoff valve 24 and such section is joined with a uid supply,
a portion thereof being' indicated at 25. 4
The hose I9 is adapted to be wound on and unwound from the reel body I8 and is wound thereon when the said reel is to be conned Within the compartment I0 in the housing A.
What is claimed is:
1. In a structure of the character described,
a body forming a receptacle open at its top, a closure swingable within said receptacle and to a position for closing its top, a latch'on the receptacle for holding the closure when closing 50 the top, a reel supported by said closure for connement within the receptacle when the said closure is therein and having a tubular axle provided with an outlet through the reel, and a tubular pintle swingably connecting the closure 55 with the receptacle and having a branch coupled with said axle of the reel.
2. In a structure of the character described, a body forming a receptacle open at its top, a closure swingable Within said receptacle and to a position for closing its top, a latch on the receptacle for holding the closure when closing the top, a reel supported by said closure for connement Within the receptacle when the said closure is therein and having a tubular axle provided with an outlet through the reel, a tu? bular pintle swingably connecting the closure with the receptacle and having a branch coupled With said axle of the reel, and a hose adapted to be Wound and unwound on and from the reel and having coupling with said outlet.
