Description
B. J. WARDEN. Fastening Attachment for Vehicle-Dashes.
Patented Nov. 11, 1879.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BENJAMIN J. WARDEN,
OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT lN FASTENING ATTACHMENTS FOR VEHlCLE-DASHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 221,636, dated November 11, 1879 application filed August 18, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN J. WARDEN, of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastening Attachments for Vehicle-Dashes, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a device for more securely connecting footless dashes to vehicles than any heretofore in use, with less liability to get loose.
The invention consists in the combination, with a stationary clip having a laterally-projecting shoulder which sets over the upper edge of the corner-block of a vehicle-body, of a movable clip pivoted in the said shoulder of the stationary clip, as will be fully hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an inside elevation, showing the front and bottom of the box and the dash of a vehicle in section. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of the same with a different form of clamp, and Fig. 3 is a front view of the clamp shown in Fig. 2.
A is the front, B the side, and O the bottom, of the box of a vehicle. D is the corner block of the box, and E- the body-loop. All of these parts may be of any of the ordinary forms.
F is the dash, preferably made like that shown in my patent of December 3, 1878, or May 27, 1879, both of which have oval-shaped frames, as shown atf.
The attaching device is composed of a shoulder, G, which rests on top of the cornerblock D, and is provided with a hole to receive the lug N on clip M, as shown in Fig. 2; a leg, H, which extends down along the inside of the block, preferably terminating in a foot, I, which is provided with a hole for a bolt, J, which may be made to pass through the foot, bottom 0,.and body-loop E, as shown in Fig. l; a stationary clamp, K, extending sufficiently above the box to engage the dash-frame, and having an arm, L, projecting downward in front of the box, and a clip, M, provided with a lug. N, which. pivots in the hole of the shoulder G, and which embraces the other,
side of the dash, and is made to clasp it by means of the bolt P.
By this device the usual apron on the dash is dispensed with, and, the frame being brought down close to the top of the box, the fastener is able to resist greater strains.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is The pivoted clip M and stationary one K, in combination with a dash-foot, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 12th day of August, 1879.
BENJAMIN J. WARDEN.
