Description

Patented Sept. 24,` 1940 UNITED STATES LUBRICATING PUMP Franz Urschler, Vienna, Germany, assigner to the firm Alex. Friedmann, Vienna, Germany Application February 25, 1939, Serial No. 258,395 In Austria January 8, 1938 1 Claim.
The object of the present invention is to provide a simple piston lubricating pump capable of operating continually also against very high counter-pressures and permitting the delivery of each individual pumping unitto be regulated at will. With these and other purposes in view the improved piston lubricating pump is designed as follows:
The lubricating pump comprises single-piston pumping units having pistons or plungers actuate'd by rectilinearly guided slides and so arranged relatively to the shaft carrying the operating excentrics that their axes approximately intersect the axis of said shaft whereby it is obtained that only few 'members are subject to wear and detrimental bending strains 'of the pistons are obviated. In spite of the fact that with this arrangement no free space is left above the heads of the pistons, the possibility of regulating the stroke of every piston in a simple manner is simultaneously obtained by the provision of an adjustable abutment on the part of the slide located between said shaft and the respective piston head and transmittingthe power from the respective `excentric to said piston head, said abutment permitting to vary the size of the -jaw of said slide embracing the piston head. By these simple` means it is possible to design a lubricating pump tting with adjustable single-piston pumping units and capable of operating continually against very high counter-pressures.
For adjusting the above-mentioned. abutment inthe jaw of the slide embracing a piston head,
cooperating adjusting members may according to the invention be provided on said slide and connected with an 'adjusting device arranged on the f pump casing, said adjusting device being accessible from the outside and indicating the adjustment.
Furthermore, the suction port of each pumping the operating chamber of the piston so that the latter passes over the said suction port and closes it during its pressure stroke and a drip chamber with a transparent wall may be inserted in the ,suction passage of each pumping unit so that the I'amount of lubricant drawn-in by the pumping unit from the oil container is made visible in the form of drops. With this arrangement anylubri- 0 cant passing through the clearance between the piston and the bore of the cylinder during the pressure stroke can only get into thev suction paSSage. It will partly destroy the vacuum created' within the drip chamber by the preceding suction stroke and during the following suction element may be located at `the highest point of supported on the casing I.
- in which Fig. 1 is a vertical cross-section of a piston lubricating pump according to this invention, and Fig.' 2 is a vertical longitudinalsection thereof. I 10 In the drawing, I denotes the pump casing forming the oil receptacle, arranged within said casing I are the single-piston pumping units each I comprising a cylinder 2 and a piston 3 tted into the bore l of the cylinder. 5 denotes the suction 15 port which is covered and closed by the piston 3 during its pressure stroke while said piston forces the lubricant through a check valve 6 into thev passage 1 and thence to the point of lubrication.
The head 8 of the piston 3 is embraced by the 20 prongs of the forked end of the jaw or claw 9 of a slide or yoke member I0 reciprocated along a bolt Il parallel to the axis of the piston 3 by means of an excentric provided on the main shaft I3. 25
As shown in Fig. 2 the shaft I3 carries a plurality of excentrics I2 staggeredrelatively to one another, each excentric actuating a slide III and a pumping unit 2, 3. 'Ihe axis of each piston'3 is so arranged that its extension perpendicularly 30 I intersects the axis of the shaft I3. By these means any detrimental 4bending strain on the piston 3 during operation is obviated. For transmitting the power from the excentric to the slide during the pressure lstroke a sliding block I4 is 35 inserted between each excentric and the slide lcooperating therewith.
In the jaw 9 of the slide I0 and more particularly on the portion I6 of the slide situated between the excentric I2 and the piston head 8, an o adjustable abutment I5 is rotatably mounted on a bolt I1. The said abutment I5 consists of a disc having a helical lower surface and permitting to fill the intermediate space between thepiston head 3 and the upper surface of the jaw 9 to a. 45 greater or lesser extent according as-the sai disc is turned around the bolt II.
To enable the said disc to beturned, it is provided with a toothed rim I3 engaging a second adjusting member, namely the gear wheel I3,5o thev shaft 2l of which is supported by the portion I6 of the slide'. The shaft 20 receives in its bore 2| the coupling bolt 23 which is rotatably l A pin 24 passing through the shaft 20 is free to glide in the longi- 53 tudinal slot of me coupling bon; 23 when the suce moves up and down. 'I'he coupling bolt 23, which carries on its upperpart an adjusting knob 26 provided with a projection 3|, is supported in the index disc 28. These members constitute together an adjusting device for the adjusting of the shaft I3'carrying' the excentrics it is possible to provide an adjusting device accessible from the outside for regulating the stroke of the piston 3 and indicating the adjustment on an exterior scale, and to transmit the power from the.shaft I3 by means of the slide I0 to the piston head 8 without subjecting the piston' 3 to any detrimental strain of exure.
In order to enable the amount of lubricant drawn in by the piston 3 from the oil container I at every piston play to be observed, the suction port 5 of the cylinder 2 communicates with the two passages 21, 32 in which a drip or sight chamber 22'is inserted. As soon as the piston 3uncovers the suction port 5 on its intake stroke the lubricating oil is drawn from the oil reservoir I through the pipe 32 and the nozzle 29 into the drip chamber and thence through the passage 21 and the suction port 5 into the loperating chamber l of the cylinder 2. 'I'he walls of the drip chamber 22 are formed by a glass tube so that the oil dripping from the nozzle 28 may be seen from the outside. Any oil leaking through the clearance between the piston 3 and its bore 4' 4a rectilinearly guided yoke member engaged by and being reciprocatingly operated by said cam shaft, said yoke member having a claw portion extending therefrom and having a forked end, an adjusting member revolvably connected with said yoke member and extending into said claw portion, a pump piston extending in between the prongs of said forked end and having' a head extending into said claw portion and being held thereby and abuttingly ycooperating with said adjusting` member, the longitudinal axis of said piston intersecting with the axis of said cam shaft, the axis of rotation of said adjusting member being spaced from and parallel to the axis of said piston, adjusting member operating meansextending outside of said casingandoperatively engaging and being adapted to rotate said adjusting member, said adjusting member having circumferential portions of different thicknesses and, upon rotation, aiording change of position o1' said piston relatively to said yoke member.
