\ ARTIFICIAL BAIT Filed Aug. 27, 1938 Fltt Eli-11555 Patented Sept. 24, 1940 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
My invention refers to artificial lures or baits, and it particularly has for its object to provide a buoyant spoon plug formed from fibrous material, such for example as disclosed in my previous Patent No. 1,996,477, issued April2, 1935.
The specific object of my present invention is to provide a spoon of buoyant type embodying a solid body having an uninterrupted smooth face or plane intersected by a circular or oval face or plane, the same being in eifect semi-circular in cross section, whereby the fiat face, when in action upon the water, will ride upon the surface thereof and simulate a live bait by causing a wake in the form of a V shape as it travels.
Another object of my invention is to provide, under certain conditions, a buoyant plug with a single hook, the barbed end of which, under normal conditions, is concealed in the body of the Plus.
With the above and other minor objects in view, the invention consists in certain peculiarities of. construction and combination of parts as .zvill be hereinafter fully set forth with respect 0 laimed.
In the drawing:
- Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a spoon plug, embodying the features of my invention, the view being taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2; and
Figure 2 is an inverted plan view of the same, with parts broken away to better illustrate structural features.
The numeral I represents a solid fibrous body, preferably of wood or similar buoyant material. The body is preferably semi-circular in cross section, to develop a flat bottom plane 2 and a circular crowned top plane 2'.
Secured to the front end of the plug is a strap 3 through which is passed wire strand 4, terminating with an exposed line loop 5. The strand the accompanying drawing and subsequently 4 is nested under the lower leg of the strap 3, with the looped end of said strap and associated leg being secured by atack to the body, as shown,
The rear end of the buoyant plug I is centrally kerfed to form a seating nest l for the end 5 of a single hook 8, it being understood that the end or bight of the hook normally rests upon an inclined portion of the recess, whereby it is below the exterior line of the plug. Thus concealed it will produce a Weedless bait.
The single hook 8 is pivotally connected to the forward portion of the body I by an eye 9, and when the bait is drawn through the water, under normal conditions the hook will resist all weeds,
but when it is struck :by a fish, said hook, as indicated in dotted lines, will immediately swing out or beyond the body, whereby the fish will be caught in the usual manner.
Attention is directed to the fact that the bight of the hook is entirely within the slot 1, and is 20 at all times guided in its vertical movement by the side walls of said slot. Hence, the hook is prevented from twisting upon its pivot, and is held to reciprocate vertically at all times by the walls of said slot. 25
While I have described very minutely my inventidn as to details of construction, it is understood that I may vary the structure to come within the scope of my claim.
I claim: v
An artificial bait comprising a body having a narrow rear slot therein provided with a forwardly inclined seat portion, a single hook in pivotal union with the :body, the body of the hook 85 being nested and reciprocatively guided between the slot walls to hold said hook against twisting, the point of the hook being supported and concealed upon the inclined portion of the slot when said hook is normally at rest.
