In Great Britain May 31, 1938 2 Claims.
My invention relates to improvements in indirect lighting fittings and more particularly to a type in which a light source is arranged above an opaque bowl reflector which redirects the light 5 falling thereon toward the ceiling. It has already been proposed in connection with such indirect lighting fixtures to employ a supplementary cup reflector spaced a short distance below the main bowl reflector in such a way as to provide an 10 annular space through which direct or reflected light from alight source may pass to illuminate the under side of the main reflector. However, with such an arrangement the under side of the cup reflector will be unilluminated v and will present a dark surface to the eye which, from a decorative point of view, is objectionable.
One of the objects of this invention is to provide a light control construction which will eliminate the objection noted above.
which the under side of the main reflector may be given a color effect.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the description and claims.
The single figure of the drawing is a side elevational view, partly in section, of a lighting fixture and electric lamp.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the construction shown comprises an opaque reflector l positioned underneath the light source 2 for reflecting light upwardly. This reflector has an opening 3 underneath the light source on which is mounted a prism 4 which extends across the opening. This prism has an inner annular lightdirecting surface 5 and an outer annular lightdirecting surface 6, the inner annular surface 5- tapering downwardly and outwardly to direct light toward said outer annular suface 6 and the outer annular surface tapering upwardly and outwardly to direct light onto the under side I of the main reflector, the direction of the light rays being indicated by the lines a and b.
A color screen 8 may be provided between the A further object is to provide a construction in skilled in the art and it is desired, therefore, that the invention be limited only by the prior art and the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. An indirect light control construction comprising an opaque reflector to be positioned underneath a light source for reflecting light upwardly, said reflector having an opening underneath said light source, and a prism mounted to extend across said opening, said prism having an inner annular light-directing surface and an outer annular light-directing surface, said inner annular surface tapering downwardly and outwardly at such an angle as to reflect and refract substantially all of the light striking said surface toward said outer annular surface and said outer annular surface extending at such an angle to light striking said surface as to retract it onto the under side of said reflector.
2. An indirect light control construction comprising an opaque reflector to be positioned underneath a light source for reflecting light upwardly, said reflector having an opening underneath said light source, and a prism mounted to extend across said opening, said prism having an inner annular light-directing surface and an outer annular light-directing surface, said inner annular surface tapering downwardly and outwardly to direct light toward said outer annular surface, and said outer annular surface tapering upwardly and outwardly to direct light onto the under side of said reflector.
GEORGE DONALD SKINNER.
