4 Claims.
This invention relates to an improved portable pump adapted to ice-mounted on motor vehicles such-as, tractors or trucks and provided with hoisting 'means'for adjustably supporting the pumping unit.
It is a particular aim of this invention to provide a portable pumping apparatus adapted to be mounted'on a truck or tractor, and adapted W tobe usedfor draining swamps or the like and for pumping rivers or streams for irrigating land.
More particularly, it is an object of this invention to provide a pumping apparatus including a'pivotallymounted pump casingprovided withpurnping means actuated by the driving means of the vehicle to which the apparatus is attached and having supporting means for the free inlet end of the pumping unit by which said end maybe readily raised when the apparatus n is to be moved or lowered to any desired depth d' to submerge theinlet end of the pump casing in a body of water. Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter become more fully apparent from the following description of the drawings,

Referring more particularly to the drawings, wherein like reference characters designate like or corresponding parts throughout the different views, it! designates a portion of one end of a 40 motor vehicle such as a tractor, to which is secured the frame H, which projects outwardly therefrom. 1
The frame-H at its free end, is provided with the removable brackets 12 each provided with 45 a plurality of alined openings 13 for a purpose which will hereinafter be described.
A pump tubing or casing M, as shown, comprises a section it having an elbow I6 at one end disposed at an oblique angle to the remaining 5 portion of the tubing M, a section i! joined to the opposite end of section l and a section l8 connected to the opposite end of section ll. Section 58 of the tubing !4 forms the inlet end of thepump casing and is tapered along its un- 55 derside Hi from a point adjacent its secured end its end it and including the pair of arms 2| t which are secured by the fastenings 22 to the section 55 and which project therefrom in a plane parallel'to'the axis of the casing M. I The free ends of the arms 2! are pivotally connected by the fastenings 23 to the brackets l2 and it 11b;
will benotedthat iastenings '23 may be positinned in any. of the three alined openings l3 for adjusting the elevation of the secured end of the tubing it.
As best seen in Figures 3 and 4, a sleeve 24 is axially disposed in the tubing M with one end extending through and supported in the elbow it, as seen in Figure 3, and the opposite end supported by a bracket 25 mounted in the section il.. A shaft 25 is journaled in the sleeve 24 and 26 has a screw conveyor 2?! connected to one end and positioned in section I? adjacent the open mouth it. The opposite end of shaft 2t; extends through openings in the plates 23 which are secured to the arms 2!. Shaft 26 at this end con- 5 meets with a double universal joint 29 which forms a part of the power take-off shaft 30 which is connected to the driving means of the tractor tractor.
A. derrick or hoist 3| is secured to the frame H and extends upwardly therefrom. Derrick 3| is provided at its upper end with a pulley 32 and intermediate of its ends with a winch or hoist 33 including a crank 34 and a pawl and ratchet 35. A cable 35 is connected to the winch 33 and is trained twice over the pulley 32 and connected to a hoist block 3? in the conventional manner. Hoist block. 3i is provided with a hook 33 which engages the eyelet 39 on section IT for supporting the pump tubing it adjacent its free end.
As best seen in Figure 2, end 56 of the pump tubing it is connected to one end of a pipe line 4%} which extends along one side of the vehicle 4 Hi and may be suitably supported thereby in any suitable manner, not shown. The pipe line 40, only a portion of which is illustrated, may be of any-desired length and forms a conduit for conveying the water pumped through the tubing 14.
From the foregoing it will be obvious, that the winch 33 may be operated for raising tubing M on its pivot 23 to lift the end it! above the ground level so that the apparatus may be readily 55 moved to a point Where it is to be used, after which winch 33 can again be operated to lower end 18 until mouth I9 is submerged in the body of Water to be pumped and the impeller 21 may then be actuated through operation of the tractor motor, not shown, to pump water through tubing i l and pipe line for either draining or irrigating land. Tubing M may be lowered or raised a substantial distance so that end l8 may be readily submerged under normal conditions. The mouth 59 is so shaped that it may be completely submerged in very shallow Water and is adapted to be disposed in a plane parallel to the earths surface when slightly below such a point so that the apparatus may be efficiently operated for pumping very shallow streams or rivers or for completely draining swamp land.
Various modifications and changes may obviously be made and are contemplated, as the drawings and description are only intended to illustrate a preferred embodiment thereof, and the right is therefore reserved to make such changes as fall within the spirit and scope of the invention as hereinafter defined by the appended claims; a
I claim as my invention:
1. An apparatus of the class described comprising a frame adapted to be mounted on a motor driven vehicle, a pump" casing pivotally mounted on the free end of said frame and projecting therefrom, a shaft journaled in and extending substantially through said casing, a worm conveyor connected to one end of said shaft and disposed in said casing adjacent its inlet end, a universal shaft connected at one end to the opposite end of said first mentioned shaft and adapted to be connected at its opposite end to a power take-off shaft connected to the driving means for said vehicle for operating said tions being adapted to be supported by a tractor and projecting therefrom, the opposite end of said section being pivotally connected to one end of a second section, a pump tubing fixedly secured to the free end of said second section adjacent one of its ends, a shaft extending through said tubing and journaled therein, pumping means connected to said shaft and disposed in said tubing adjacent its free end, power take-off means including a universal driving shaft connecting said first mentioned shaft, at a point substantially in line with the pivotally connected ends of the frame sections, to the driving means of said tractor, and means for adjustably supporting the free end of said tube.
3. A device as in claim 2, said supporting means comprising a derrick mounted on and; projecting upwardly from saidfirst mentionedg frame section and provided with a winch, and a hoisting block and cable connecting said winch to the free end of said pump tubing for adjustably supporting it relatively to the tractor.
