Application September 5, 1939, Serial No. 293,500
4 Claims. (Cl. 62-414) This invention relates to improvements in machines for cooling fluids and especially is concerned with a novel rapid freezer for making ice cream, sherbet and the like.
It is an object of this invention to provide a novel cooling device which may be operated either manually or by means of electrical power and which is useful for the manufacture at home or semi-commercially of ice cream, sherbet,
0 ices and the like.
It is another object of this invention to provide a cooling device essentially completely contained within a cabinet wherein also are contained the materials being cooled, thereby precluding possibility of contamination and also minimizing the loss of energy in cooling a material.
A feature of the novel cooling device according to this invention is that portions of the material to be cooled are successively treated and after cooling to the desired degree, that is to say, solidification or incipient solidification of a material, the treated material is removed from contact with an from the locality of the untreated material, being separately stored for subsequent removal.
An advantage of the novel cooling mechanism according to this invention over existing types of cooling devices, especially home ice cream freezers and the like, is its comparative simplicity of construction which, in addition to suiting it to the requirements of mass manufacture, also is of importance in facilitating the cleaning and repair of the device during use.
Other objects, advantages and features of the new and improved cooling device according to the present invention will be apparent to those skilled in this art during the course of the following description.
Regarded in certain of its broader aspects the novel cooling machine according to the present invention comprises an incased horizontally extending vertically sliding pan suited to receiving the liquid to be cooled; a refrigerant-containing hollow cylinder, actually rotatingly mounted and having peripheral parts within said pan; a pivoted first scraper spring-urged against said cylinder for removing material therefrom; and a second scraper blade mounted transversely within said pan spring-urged against said cylinder for removing material therefrom.
In order to facilitate a fuller and more complete understanding of the present invention, a specific embodiment thereof herein illustrated will be hereinafter described, it being clearly understood, however, that the illustrated embodiment, although presently preferred, is provided solely by way of example of the practice of this invention and not by Way of limitation thereof except insofar as the invention is recited in the 5 subjoined claims.
Referring then to the drawings,
Figure l is substantially a side elevational view of the preferred embodiment of this invention,
Fig. 2 is substantially a vertical sectional view 10 of the device illustrated in Fig. 1 illustrating internal parts of the mechanism and position of use for the making of sherbet, ices and the like.
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view, similar to Fig. 2, but with the internal parts of the device 15 arranged for the making of ice cream,
Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional view of the device illustrated in Fig. l,
Fig. 5 is substantially a transverse vertical sectional view of a device illustrated in Fig. 1, 29
Fig. 6 is a top plan view of the platform and pan forming part of the device according to this invention,
Fig. 7 is a fragmentary side elevational view showing the preferred mode of mounting a motor gs upon the device for the operation thereof,
Fig. 8 is a front elevational view of one of the scrapers forming parts of the device according to this invention,
Fig. 9 is a detail view partially in section of 30 one of the bearings carrying the refrigerating cylinder, and
Fig. 10 is a side elevational view partially in section of a device for making ice cream or frozen confection. 35
Referring to the drawings, it will be noted that the illustrated preferred embodiment of this invention generally designated by the numeral it comprises a cabinet having a bottom portion 2!, sides 22 and 23 and top 2 1, the top 40 being swingingly mounted upon parts of the cabinet by hinges 25. Handles 26 mounted upon the curved top 2d are provided for facilitating opening and closing of the cabinet top as hereinafter more fully will be apparent. A swinging 45 lid til having a stop 28 engaging with a portion of the cabinet is provided for facilitating filling of the cooling pan. The enclosure of the cabinet is completed by the sides 29 and 30 substantially as shown. It will be noted that a drawer 3|, 50 provided with a drawer pull 3la, is slidingly mounted in lower portions of the cabinet for receiving treated material, as will be hereinafter described.
The horizontally extending vertically sliding 55 platform 40, positioned within the cabinet and resting upon a pair of spaced transversely extending freely rotatable crank shafts 4| and 42 journaled in sides of the cabinet, is held therein in a manner precluding horizontal movement by means of the downwardly extending ears! 43? mounted on sides of the platform and slidingly received on the crank shaft M. Cranks 41a and 42a are provided on the crank shafts M and 42 for facilitating rotation thereof whereby the platform All is moved upwardly when the shafts are rotated from the positions illustrated in the drawings. The platform when raised occupies substantially the relative position shown in Fig. 3 in phantom View. To retain the crank shafts ll and $2 in selected positions but in yielding relationship with the side wall 22, the ends of the shafts are provided with crank arms Mb and 421) respectively, which carry detent-engaging means H0 and 420 respectively engaging with detent openings Md and 32d formed in parts of the cabinet side 22 as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 4.-
A relatively shallow pan 64 having a somewhat raised end portion generally designated by the numeral Ma is mounted upon the platform 30 for engagement of an end of the pan with the raised end portion Mia of the platform against which the pan is pressed by the cross bar 46 slidingly attached to the platform Ml by the adjustment' means its. received in the slot 461) formed in the platform essentially as illustrated. Spring pressing means (not shown) urge the cross piece 48 toward the stop 40o. Upwardly extending ears 45 on the platform Q8 embrace the sides of the pan 44, thereby facilitating holding same in the selected relationship to the platform as above described.
A hollow essentially cylindrical refrigerant receiving tank 58 having an internally tapped end 50a for receiving the externally threaded cover 5% is provided with axially extending trunnions 5| and 5? receivable in split bearings generally designated by the numeral 52 mounted in parts of the cabinet sides 22 and 23.
Reference is now made to Fig. 9 wherein details of the split bearings best are illustrated and wherein it will be seen that the bearings 52 each comprises a pair of cooperating G-shaped members 53a and 53b united at one side by hinge elements 53' and presenting at the other side out wardly extending slotted lugs 53c and 53d which receive the spring-pressing connector elements- 54 carrying springs 55 held in position thereon by nuts 56. One of the trunnions, namely the trunnion 51 is radially slotted to receive and engage with portions of a rod 58 carrying the operating crank 59 by which the cylinder 58 is manually rotated.
A transversely extending scraper 60 mounted within the pan M by pins 63a received in the sides of the pan engages with peripheral parts of the cylinder 59 when the pan is moved into raised position whereby cooled material can be removed from the cylinder as hereinafter will be described.
A scraper r55 fixedly mounted on the freely rotatable shaft 55 and spring-urged against peripheral parts of the cylinder 58 by the coil springs 5? is operable from the exterior of the cabinet by the handles 6?, one of which is provided on each end of the shaft 6'5.
In the event that it is desirable to operate a device by electrical power instead of manually, the crank 59 and rod 58 are replaced by an electrical motor 10 illustrated in Fig. 6 mounted on the side 22 of the cabinet by brackets H and 12 and provided with a shaft 13 having radially extending parts engaging with the radial cut-away formations of the trunnion 51 hereinabove described.
When in some instances it is desirable to cool and solidify confection such as suckers and the like, the device illustrated in Fig. 10 is useful and it will be noted that the device comprises an essentially hollow frustoconical casing 80 provided with a threadedly engaging cap 8| having positioned therein a gasket 82 for facilitating closure of the container.
Having described the structural features of the novel cooling device according to the preferred embodiment of the present invention, its mode of operation now will be described. The material to be cooled is placed in the pan 44 and a suitable refrigerant is provided in the cylinder 50. The pan is partially raised by manipulation of the cranks Ma and 42a whereby peripheralparts of the cylinder 50 are caused to dip into the liquid to be cooled. Assuming for instance that ices or sherberts are being made, the cylinder 50 then is rotated by operation of the crank 58 or the motor Hi depending upon whether the device is being manually or electrically operated whereby material is carried from the pan by the cylinder toward the scraper blade 65 which removes the chilled and, under proper conditions, frozen material from the cylinder, transferring same to the interior of the drawer Sid. If ice cream is to be made it is preferred, instead of using the scraper blade E5, to use the scraper B0 and in so doing the pan is reversed to occupy the position illustrated in Fig. 3 and the cranks Ma and 42a are rotated whereby the platform and pan are raised moving the scraper 66 into contact with the periphery of the refrigerating cylinder 50. In this manner material removed from the cylinder by the scraper accumulates in the end of the pan generally designated by the reference character 54a.
In the event'that individual servings of cooled confection are desired, such as suckers and the like, the device illustrated in Fig. 10 is filled with material to be cooled and after the closure cap 8| has been secured upon the casing 80, the assembly is placed with the refrigerant material in the interior of the cylinder 56 whereby, during rotation of the cylinder, the contents of the casing or casings 8!) are cooled.
Having thus described the present invention, what it is desired to secure by Letters Patent is:
