((1263-49) the hot gases from the tubes in-the, furnace shell proper could not pass up the side plates of the cover without interference with such extensions. In fact, the flow of such gases was retarded so that they were in effect pocketed or trapped where the roof plates extended over the side plates. This in turn caused rapid deterioration of the cover and frequently caused theuoof plates to burn out completely at the juncture thereof with the side plates.
In the present instance, the objectionable construction referred to has been dispensed with en- 7 tirely anda better and more efficient structure has been provided. Moreover, the cover has been otherwise strengthened to give it rigidity and to prevent the same from collapsing while being handled or while in use.

Figures 7, 8 and 9, respectively, are fragmentary vertical sectional views of alternative rib con-- gations ll extending vertically and with the' straight end portions ill of adjacent wall members abutting and welded together so that an integralunit is provided. As illustrated in Figures 1 and 2, the side walls A and B are higher than the end walls 0 and p.
The roof member E is preferably arched trans versely and comprises a sheet of metal provided 55 at opposite sides thereof with straight-edge portions l2 and intermediate wavy edge portions l3. As illustrated in Figures 1 and 3, these straight edge portions I2 are at the front and rear-ends of the roof member and abut and are welded to the straight end portions ID of the upright 6 wall members A and '3, while the wavy edge portions I3 conform in shape and are welded to the inner faces of the corrugations ll ofthe up-' right wall members A and B just below the upper ends of the latter. 7 r 10 F are reinforcing ribs extending transversely of the roof E, while B are sections of a reinforcing rib extending longitudinally of the roof, preferably at the center line thereof. As shown, the ribs a are L-shape in cross section and are spaced 15 apart longitudinally of the roof. The upper edges l5 of these ribs F conform in curvature to the curvature of the arch E and are welded thereto while the bases I6 of 'said ribs aresubstantially straight. At opposite ends of the roof the bases 20 I6 of the ribs F rest upon and-are welded to the upper ends of the end wall members C and D, hence it will be apparent that these end ribs F close the spaces at opposite ends of the structure between the roof E and the upper ends of the end 26 H may have different cross sections than those 85 described above. For example, either or both of said ribs maybe in the form of plain plates such as 30 as illustrated in Figure '7, or either,

What we claim as our invention is:
