Claims.
l one or more reel engaging members which make a driving connection between the spindle and one of the iilm reels or which separate the film reels from each other. However, all of said known constructions are either rather complicated or else perform only one of the aforementioned functions.
The primary object of the present invention is the provision in a reel mounting of a reel engaging member which is pivotally connected at one end to the spindle member and which has at its other end a shoulder portion for lengaging the axial opening in one film reel to form a driving connection and which has a tongue portion adjacent to said shoulder portion and for limiting the axial movement of either or both of said film reels.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a reel engaging member in a reel mounting and which is pivotally connected to the spindle member for rotation about an axis which is oblique to the rotational axis of the spindle member.
A further object of the invention is the provision in a reel mounting of a reel engaging member for driving one film reel and for spacing a pair of film reels from each other and which is movable into an overlying operative lposition with respect to the spindle member in such a manner that the axial opening of the driven film reel maintains the reel engaging member in such an overlying position.
Other and further objects of the invention will be suggested to those skilled in the art by the description which follows.
The above and other objects of the invention are fulfilled Vby a reel mounting assembly for coaxially supporting a pair of film reels and comprising a stationary support member, a spindle member journalled in said support member for rotation about an axis, and a reel engaging member pivotally connected at one end to said spindle member, having at its other end a shoulder portion and an adjacent tongue portion, which portions are operative respectively to engage one film reel for a driving connection thereto and known to provide in or on such reel mountings to limit the axial movement of both iilm reels when said reel engaging member overlies said spindle member, and which portions become inoperative and permit the removal of a film reel when the reel engaging member is swung through into extended alignment with said spindle member. The removal of the iilm reel from the spindle member is greatly facilitated if the reel engaging member is mounted'iorrotation about an axis lwhich is oblique to the rotational axis of the spindle member. Reference is hereby made to the accompanying drawing wherein similar reference characters designate similar elementsand wherein: Fig. 1 is a top or end view of the reel mounting according to the invention with one lange'of they driven reel broken away. f

Fig. 3 is a transverse sectionof the reel mount-y ing assembly taken on the line 3--3 of Fig. 2.' It is to be understood that the reel mounting herein described and disclosed may be used on any type of photographic or motion picture apparatus which requires coaxial mounting of a pair of lm reels so that one reel may rotate freely with respect to the mounting while the other reel is positively driven by the spindle member of the mounting. v
In the illustrated embodiment of the invention a stationary support member comprises` a wall I6 which is provided with a recess 'l2 andra bushing II. The bushing II has a basey I3 which is fastened to the wall I0 by screws I4 andA has a sleeve portion I5 which is provided with an axial bore I6.
The spindle member is journalled in said support for rotation about an axis coaxial with the bushing Il. Such a spindle member -I'I has a reduced bearing portion I8 fitting into the axial bore I6 of sleeve portion I5. A pulley I9 may be threaded onto the inner lend of spindle member Il and may be driven by a spring belt or other driving means for rotation of the spindle member. The spindle member I I is also provided' with an inclined surface 20, the purpose of which' will be later explained. 'I'he reel vengaging member 2I is pivotally connected to the spindle member I'I by a pin22 which extends into spindle member I'I at an oblique angle to the rotational axis thereof. They reel engaging member 2l has a shoulder portion 23 and an adjacent tongue portion 24. The reel engaging member 2I may be moved into an overlying or overlapping operative position with respect to the spindle member I'I as shown in Fig. 1 and by the full lines in Fig. 2 or may be swung into an extended inoperative position in substantial alignment with the spindle member as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 2.
With the reel engaging member 2l in its extended or inoperative position, a iilm reel may be moved over saidjreel engaging vmember 2l and said spindle member I'I onto the sleeve I5 of bushing II.` The two iilm reels are preferably f identical and each comprises a cylindrical hub member 25 andflanges 26 and 21 attached to opposite ends ofr said hub member 25. In a well known manner each ange 26 is provided with a round axial opening 28 and each flange 2l is provided with a square axial opening 29. Since one of the lm reels is to function as a supply lm reel and the other as a take up film reel, said iilm reels will be designated respectively as film reel S and ilrn reel T. A friction drag is provided to preventv the supplyilm reel S from turningl too freely upon the sleeve l5. Such a `friction dragl may be conveniently provided as` a spring clipI 30 snapped into an annular recess 3l in sleeve portion i5. Spring clip 3@ has a corner portion 32 for cooperating with the square axial opening 29 in the film reel S.
The operation of the reel mounting' assembly according to the invention will now be explained. The reel vengaging member 2l` is irst swung into the extended inoperative position indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 2. The ilm reel S may then be positionedl on the sleeve portion I5 and the corner portion 32 of spring clip 30 insures that said reel S is inserted in the proper relation by entering thegsquare axial opening 29 thereof, If the'reel S is moved overthe sleeve I5 in reverse position, the corner 32 of clip 3G' will abut against the iiange 25 .and prevent complete insertion of the reel ontothe sleeve I5. After the proper positioning of supplyfiilm reel S, the reel engaging memfber 2| may be moved into an overlying operative position with respect to the spindle member I1. This position is shown by thefull lines in Fig. 2 from which it is apparent that the tongue portion 24 of reel engaging member 2| will now prevent removal of the reel S or axial displacement of reel S during its rotation. The film reel T is now placed upon the spindle member I1 and over the reel engaging member 2I. Axial movement of the reel T is also limited by the tongue portion 24 which, therefore, Vacts to space the reels S and T with respect to each other. At the same time, the square axial opening 29 of the reel T ts over the shoulder portion 23 of reel engaging member 2l to form a VdrivingconnectionY from the spindle member II to the ilm reel T. Again, as an attempt is made to locate the reel T on the reel mounting in reverse position the shoulder portion 23 will engage against ange 26 and prevent complete and proper location of said lm reelT.
The mounting of reel engaging member 2i for rotation about an oblique axis is not absolutely essential for the operation of the reel-mounting assemlbly.V Howeverysuch oblique mounting of reel engaging member 2l causes thesame to be' moved upon rotation into inoperative position opposite the e-nd of the spindle member II so that the reel S can be more readily moved because of less 'interference between the shoulder portion 23 and tongue portion 24 and the axial openings in the flanges of said iilm reel S.
From the` foregoing description, ity Will be ap vparent that one end ofthe reel .engaging mem-` ber 2| performs two functions, one by virtue of shoulder portion 23 to form; a driving connection between spindle member I1 and the square axial opening 29 of the film reel T, the other by rea-v son of tongue portion 24 to limit the axial movement of iilm reels S and T and to space said reels with respect to each other. It should also be noted that the reel engaging member 2 I is maintained in its overlying operative position by the axial'opening 29 of the iilm reel T.
Other modifications of the invention Will occur to those skilled in the4 art andthe present inioy vention is limited only by the scope of the apy tion and an adjacent tongue portion, and a pivot for connecting the other end of said armfto the other unsupported end of said spindle member,

A reel mounting for coaxially supporting a pair of film reels which are provided with axial openings, comprising a stationary support adapted to carry one of said lm reels, a spindle member having one end journaled in said support for rotation about an axis, adapted to carrythe other of said lm reels and having on one side an inclined surface, an arm having at one end a shoulder and a tongue, and a pivot for connecting the other end of said arm to the other unsupported end of said spindle member and having an axis oblique to the rotational axis of said spindle member and perpendicular to the inclined surface thereof, said arm being movable into an extended position With said tongue in substantial alignment with said spindle member to permit easy removal of one of said lm reels and being movable into an operative position with said shoulder adjacent said inclined surface, said shoulder being arranged to it into and be held in said operative position by the axial opening of the other lm reel in which position said shoulder forms a driving connection to said reel and said tongue limitsy the axial movement of either of said lm reels.
