FLEXIBLE TUBE Filed Sept. 22, 1938 Inventor.'

Patented Aug. 20, 1940 FLEXEBLE TUBE Valdemar Rendle, London, England, assignor to Hatiln Attari, London, England Application September 22, 1938, Serial No. 231,278
In Great Britain October l, 1937 2 Claims.
This invention relates to improved means for padding, covering or insulating rods or the like members and more particularly to such means 'adaptable for installation in a novel manner.
It has been heretofore known to provide padding, covering', supporting, spacing or insulating sheathing for bars or rod-like members such as the handles of tools, pipes and electrical conduits. In applying such sheathing it has heretofore been the practice to mold the sheathing material to conform to the cross-section of the rod or the like to be received therein and thereafter to apply the sheathing axially of the rod or in the case of steam or water pipes it is usual to apply a lagging thereto by Wrapping the material around the pipe, the sheathing being applied in the form. of tape.
In the case of hand rails and stanchions it may be necessary to disassemble the construction in order to make an axial application of a covering material or as an alternative, the covering material may be in the form of a tape. It has heretofore been found that the prefabricated molded material is generally superior to like material in tape form and the difliculty in the use of the latter has been only the diiculty of its application to the material on which it is to be used.
It is an object of this invention to provide improved coverings for tubular members and the like by the provision of a longitudinally slit cover which may be placed in position radially of the member to be covered as distinguished from the axial application methods heretofore known.
A sheathing member according to the present invention may be in the form of a T, X, or other multiple limbed shape according to the conguration of a member or group of members to which it is intended to be applied, the engaging margins in such cases extending uninterruptedly throughout the length of one of the limbs. It will be apparent that the internal or external cross-section of a device according to the present invention may vary locallj7 or as a whole to conform to the contours of the material to be covered.
A device according to the invention may be in the form of a resilient tube of any desired crosssection the wall of which is severed or slit end to end in such a manner, that each of the margins at the sides of the slit presents a series of spaced projections which when the device is in position are interdigitated with those of the other, with apertures formed longitudinally of the tube as a whole in all the projections presented coaxially of one another to take a Wire or rod threaded there-f (Cl. 13S- 49) through to effect the necessary engagement of said margins to retain the device in position. Preferably, the thickness of the wall of the device is increased in the neighbourhood of the margins of the slit.
Other objects and advantages of this invention will be apparent from a consideration of the following detailed description of preferred embodiments thereof in conjunction with the annexed drawing wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a form of this invention illustrating the cover in closed position;
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the cover in open position;
Figure 3 is a View in cross-section illustrating the radially projecting rib extending from the cover; and
Figure 4 is a view in cross-section oi a modied form of cover having an interior radial rib. In some instances it may be desirable to provide the cover 4| with means for preventing it from ures 1 to 3, inclusive.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
l. A cover for rods, bars and the like comprising, a flexible tube, members adapted for interdigitation deiining a longitudinally extending slit therein, said members also defining a radially projecting rib, and a flexible member adapted to be passed through said members to lock the same in interdigitated position.
2. A cover for rods, bars and the like having an axially extending groove therein comprising, a flexible tube dening a generally cylindrical space, members adapted for interdigitation dening a longitudinally extending slit therein, said interdigitating members also defining a rib projecting radially into the cylindrical space, and a exible member adapted to be passed through said members to lock the same in interdigitated position,

It is hereby certified that error appears in the printed specification ofthe above numbered patent requiring; correction as follows: Page l, second column, line 20, after the word and period "rib," insert the following paragraph As shown in Figures l, 2 and 5, a tube lil of resilient material such as rubber is thickened locally, as indicated at b2, throughout its length and is slit or severed along this local thickening LLZ by a zig-zag cut to leave at each side of the slit a series. of tongue-like projections )l5 which, when the device is in position, are interdigitated asclearly shown, and all these projections h5 are bored or formed with apertures longitudinally of the device, as indicated at LLLL, in such manner that when the device is in position all these apertures are aligned, so that awire or rod (not shown) which may be of non-conductive material, may be passed therethrough to retain the device firmly in positiono;
and .that the said Letters Patent should be read with this correction therein that the same may conform to the record of the case in the Patent Office signed and sealed this 1st day of october, A., 13 191m.,
