Description

L. ORTH SHIELD Aug. 20, 1940.
Filed July 22, 1938 INVENTOR. LAMBERT 02TH ATTo'RvEY.
Patented Aug. 20, 1940 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2 Claims.
This invention relates to a novel painters or cleaners shield, by means of which a surface may be painted while an adjacent marginal surface may be protected.
An object of the invention is to provide a device of the type which may be extremely economical of manufacture.
Another object of theinvention is to provide a device of the type which is so constructed as to accommodate its plane surface to inequalities on the work surface.
Another object of the invention is to provide a shield with a spring tension in the body thereof which will cause it to grip between adjacent surfaces on a plane, enabling it to maintain its position, as between a window and the sash thereof.
Other and further objects of the invention will appear as the description proceeds, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, 'in which:
Fig. 1 is a view in perspective of the device shown as it would be used to protect a window pane while the lower member of the sash is being painted.
Fig. 2 is another view in perspective.
Fig. 3 is a view taken on line 33 of Fig. 2.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the numeral I refers to the device generally, which in the preferred form has the curved hooked rod handle I I, and the curved blade portion I2.
The blade I2 is beveled on the three edges, 13, M and I5, and the corners l6 and I! may be rounded off. It is important, however, that the corners l8 and I9 be squared to facilitate close work Where the surfaces to be treated have sharp corners.
In Fig. 2, the dotted line 20 serves to indicate a level surface, showing that the blade [2 is longitudinally and concavely curved with reference to the surface on which it is used. Theblade I2 is fashioned of knife or other metal having a spring or resilient quality.
Where a sash is slightly spaced from a pane of glass, it will be understood that the blade l2 may be inserted therebetween, and the resiliency or tension thereof will hold it in place against gravity.
It will be understood that the device may be used to protect marginal surfaces while cleaning .10 materials or chemicals are used. The beveled edge in combination with the downwardly concave spring tension insures a close pressure against the surface to be painted or cleaned with a maximum of protection for the surface which is being covered.
The hooked handle member II is of value for hanging the tool as on a ledge or sill, or on a rung of a ladder.
It will be understood that the device is capable of various modifications in structure and design without departing from the spirit of the invention, within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In a device of the class described, a rectangular blade portion, a handle member centrally of the top thereof, the said blade being curved convexly longitudinally with reference to the bottom thereof and having a spring tension against flattening thereof.
2. In a device of the class described, a rectangular edgedly beveled blade portion, a handle member centrally of the top thereof, the said blade being curved convexly longitudinally downwardly and having a spring tension to resist fiat.- 5 tening thereof when pressure is applied on the handle to force said blade against a surface to be protected.
LAMBERT ORTI-I.
