4 claims. (C1. 20469) The invention relates to weather strips and has as an object the provision of a s-imple form of strip which may be easily applied and is efficient in action.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a Weather strip which will have line contact with two of the surfaces of a closure, as a window or a door.
Further objects of the invention will appear from the following description when read in connection with the accompanying drawing showing illustrative embodiments of the invention, and wherein:
Figure 1 is a horizontal section through a window opening and sash therein showing the weather strip of the invention in place;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the strip of Figure 1; and
Fig. 3 is a horizontal section showing the strip applied to a doorway. l
The weather strip of the invention is desirably formed of an integral strip of material folded to form. As shown it comprises a base plate member III having openings l'l to receive fastening elements I2 whereby the strip is secured to the jamb of an opening.
The integral strip is shown in Figure 2 as foldy ed at I3 to provide a plate member I4 extending at an acute angle to the base plate member I0, the resilience of the metal tending to hold the member I4 and its carried parts in about the normal position s-hown in Figure 2 and to be somewhat compressed toward the base plate member in use.
The strip of material of which the article is formed isagain folded at I5 to provide the plate member I6, the last named fold also being at an acute angle, and the plate members I0, I4, and I6 being of substantially Z-form.
A third fold of the metal at I1 provides a plate member I8 desirably terminating in a curved margin I9 for contact with the face 20 of a closure. The plate member I8 desirably extends at a little less than a 90 angle to the member I6.
r The fold I5 when the device is to be used upon a window is desirably deflected away from the plate IIl to provide an edge having contact with the closure, at the same time keeping the plate mem- The result of this structure is a clear line contact with the edge of the closure, thus applying the pressure resulting from the resilience of the fold I3 all at the one line, which results in a greater pressure per square inch than would be the case if the entire surface of a considerable portion of the surface of plate I6 contacted the closure.
For the same reason the curve I9 is provided upon the margin of the plate member I8. The plate member I0 is shown as normally outwardly deflected from its jambcontacting margin whereby, due to its resilience, stress will be applied to v the member I4 at fold line I3 and said member I4 and the sash contacting and embracing members I6 and I8 will be urged, as a whole, toward the sash. The structure made up of members I6 and I8 will therefore be floatingly supported in a manner to coact with the sash even though there is a substantial space between-the sash and its runway as often occurs in a poorly tted sash or in very old structures.
As shown in Figure 1, the jamb of a window is indicated at 2|, the inside trim at 22, the window stop at 23, parting strip at 24, the lower sash at 25, the upper sash at 26, the check rails at 21, the blind stop at 28, and the outside window casing at 29. Where the sash of the window to which the strip of the invention is tobe applied' is loose enough to not require dressing, the strips may be installed without removing the sash. This may be accomplished by sliding the upper sash clear down, inserting the lower end of the strips downwardly into place for the necessary lap, nailing the major portion of the margins of plate IIJ, then returning the sash to raised position and placing a nail I2 in the then exposed lower end of the strip. The lower sash may be manipulated in the same manner-reversed.
In the form as shown applied to a door inl Figure 3, the margin I5 is shown as curved in such a direction as to cam against the corner 30 of the door when the doorV is closed. The action of the invention as applied to a door with this exception is the same as that already described.
An important feature of the invention is the floating support of the closure contacting plate members I6 and I8. The fold lines `I3 and I5 provide a flexibility of support for the plates I6 and I8 which with the resilient connection between those two plates at I'I and the floating support of the portions I4, I6 and I8 upon the movable fold line I3, enable the strip to accommodate itself widely to shrinkage or swelling of a door or sash by angular movement of the angle member IB, I8 about the fold line I5 or I3 or both.
Minor changes may be made in the phys-ical embodiments of the invention without departing from the spirit thereof within the scopek of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A weather strip formed of an integral strip of resilient material folded to provide: a base plate member to be secured to a face of an opening; a plate member forming an acute angle with said base member; a second plate member forming an acute angle with the second named plate member, the fold between the second and third named plate members to press against the edge of a closure opposing a jamb of said opening and a fourth plate member projecting at a less acute angle from the edge of the third named plate member, the free edge of the last named plate member to press against a face of the closure.
2. The structure of claim 1 with the portion of the base plate member adjacent the fold thereof deflected from the plane of the free margin of said member, whereby to ioatingly support the remainder of the structure.
3. A weather strip comprising, in combination: a strip of resilient metal folded to present a base plate member to be secured at its edge to a jamb of an opening; said strip twice folded upon said base plate to provide two strip members in Z relation with said base plate member whereby the three strip members thus provided including the base plate member may stand between said jamb and an edge of the closure; said metal strip formed with a third fold at an angle less than 90 to provide with the third strip member an angular corner-of-the-closure-embracing means to contact the closure at lines upon the edge and a face of the closure.
4. The combination of claim 3 with Said base plate deformed to cause the folded edge thereof to stand away from the jamb whereby to provide floating support for the closure contacting portionsof the device.
