It has for one of its objects to'provide a selective mechanism for automatic phonographs which is so designed and constructed as to simultaneously select a plurality of records at one time and to thereupon efiect the playing of such plurality of selected records in predetermined sequence. Another object of the invention is to provide a selector mechanism including means for efiecting its adjustment to repeat any record desired without disturbing any other selections which may be also desired and which were previously 1 pre-selected.
A further object is the provision of means for chassis showing my improved selecting mechav nism associated therewith. Figure 2 is a top plan view thereof. Figure 3 is an enlarged iragmentary top plan view of the selector mechanism showing the parts in the initial stage of selective adjustment. Referring now to the drawings showing a pre= fer-red embodiment of my invention, which is directed more particularly to a multi-selective cs control for automatic phonographs, the numeral fltlindicates a horizontally-=movable magazine or platform supported for fore and aft movement in any appropriate fashion and adapted to support the records it edgewise in spaced relation, whereby the records may be delivered from the magazine to the turntable i2 and vice versa through the medium of a vertically-swinging, swiveled transfer arm it. This record transfer mechanism forms no part of the present invention and further disclosure thereof is therefore deemed unnecessary. This magazine is adapted to be selectively positioned relatively to the transfer arm and for this purpose may be actuated by a horizontally-swinging bell crank lever l4 or the like pivoted at l5 to the supporting base IS on which the working parts of the mechanism are mounted, said lever being connected at one end by a link I! with the magazine 10 while its other end is connected to a connecting rod or pitman I8 actuated by a crank l9 driven bye. shaft 20, whereby when said shaft is turned in one direction the magazine is shifted from an initial position to a predetermined selective position, and after the playing of the selected record and its return to the magazine is effected, the shaft. is turned in the opposite direction to return the magazine to its initial position'preparatory to being actuated to another selected position.
The means for selectively-controlling the actuation of the magazine to and from its selective positions of adjustment is preferably constructed as follows:
The numeral 2| indicates an actuating member which is adapted to be reciprocated in a horizontal plane from a suitable source of power indicated generally by the numeral 22 and which is connected at its free end to a selector driving member in the form of a horizontally-reciprocating bar 23 suitably guided in bearings 24 rising from the base l6. Operatively' associated with this driving member and the magazine-operating shaft 20 is a driven member in the form of a sliding cross-head or block 25 guided on ways 25"- in relative sliding relation with and adapted to be releasably coupled or clutched to the driving member 23 during predetermined times in its operative and return strokes to in turn transmit motion to the shaft 20 for accordingly actuating the magazine ID to and from selective positions of adjustment. This cross-head is provided on its underside with a gear rack 28 which is adapted to mesh with a pinion 21 fixed on the shaft 20 so that when the cross-head 25 is shifted in one direction or the other motion is accordingly transmitted to the shaft and thence to the magazine. The means for releasably coupling or clutching the driven member 25 with the driven member 23 consists of a clutch dog 28 pivoted at 29 to the driven member and normally urged by a spring 30 to swing to a clutching position in a direction toward the opposing side edge of the driving member 23. In such edge the driving member has a notch 3| providing an abutment shoulder 32 with which the dog is adapted to engage for coupling the driven member to the driving mem-.
her during a predetermined time of the selective or operative stroke of the latter in one direction, as when effecting the adustment of the magazine Hi to a given record-selecting position, after which time the dog is automatically released to uncouple such members to thereby arrest the further movement of the driven member 25 and permit the idle or independent movement of the driving member 25 for the balance of its stroke. At a predetermined time in the return stroke of the driving member, an abutment 33 thereon is adapted to engage the clutch. dog 28 to that when the driving member notch 3! comes opposite the dog, said abutment swings said dog in a direction .into coupling engagement with the driving member, whereby the driven member is returned to its initial position to accordingly return the magazine to a like position. The point of such re-coupling of the driven member with the driving member is at the selected point at which the driven member was previously released. In order to positively arrest the movement of the driven member at such time as its coupling dog 28 is released from the driving member, as well as to retain such driven member and the magazine in a selective adjusted position, the dog is provided at its outer edge with a tooth or projection 34 which is adapted to register with one or another of a longitudinal row of notches 35 formed in a bar 36 fixed to the base frame along the path of travel of the driven member, as shown in Figure 4. In the latched or clutched position oi the coupling dog, seen in Figure 3, the tooth 34 thereof is disengaged from and clear of the companion notches 35 so that the dog is free to move idly with its driven member.
Pivotally mounted at 31 on the driven member 25 is a detent 38 which is operativeiy associated with the clutch dog 28 for selectively actuating such dog to a released position at pro-selected times in the operative stroke of the driving member to thereby uncouple the driven member from the driving member and latch the former and the magazine I0 in a given position, whereupon, through the medium of suitable control means (not shown), a given selected record is transferred by the arm i3 to a playing position and after playing returned to the magazine. This detent is connected to the dog by the spring 30 and is disposed in juxtaposition to and abuts the free end of the dog for governing its release and is adapted, in so doing, to be tripped by one or another of a plurality of individual selector elements or levers 39 disposed in a row along the path of travel of the driven member and pivoted on a common horizontal pivot rod 40 for selective, individual propection to a position in the path of travel of the detent 38. These selector elements are adapted to be selected at the will of the user and for this purpose a plurality of push rods 4| are provided which are operatively associated with the respective selector elements for propecting such elements to selective positions of adjustment. These push rods may be suitably mounted and frictionally guided in supporting plates 42 and each may be provided with a number or like identifying characteristic corresponding to a companion record contained in the magazine l 0. Whenever one or more of the push rods is projected to a selective position, as shown in Figures 3 and 4, the companion selector element 39 is swung to a position in the path of travel of a tooth or projection 43 on the detent, so that during the operative stroke of the driving and driven members this detent encounters the first selected element 39 in its path, as seen in Figure 3, and accordingly trips the detent to the positions shown in Figure 4, swinging it about its pivot in a direction to release the clutch dog 38 from the notch 3| in the driving member 23, the tooth 34 of such dog at the same time interlocking with a registering notch 35 in the bar 35 to positively retain the driven member, together with the magazine, in its selected position of adjustment. During its operative stroke, the driven member, through the medium of the parts l1, l8, I9, 20, 26 and 21, actuates the magazine to a record-selecting position, such position being determined by the companion propected selector element 38.
It might be stated here, that, after the driven member 25 is adjusted to a given record-selecting position and latched in such position in the manner heretofore described, the driven member 23 c imes continues on to the end oi its operating stroke as determined by its actuating member 2i. After the playing of the record and its return to the projected selector element 89, means are provided for restoring that selector element to its initial, inoperative or non-selecting position. To this end, I provide a restoring detent, it pivoted on the detent-plvot 3i! andadapted to be tripped at a predetermined time in the forward stroke of the driving member 28 to momentarily and smartly engage the adjoining projected selector element for restoring it to its initial position. Applied to the driving member 23 is a tappet 5 which is normally disposed to engage the restoring detent Mat a predetermined time in the selecting cycle and swing it in the direction to restore the selector element 39 and its companion abutting push rod ill to initial position. A spring it connected to the restoring detent normally urges it in its normal retracted position where it clears any projected selector elements. The tappet dd is pivoted at ill to the driving member and a spring is connected thereto normally urges it against a stop pin 39 where it is in position to actuate the detent til when called upon to do so.
Should it be desired to repeat a given record, means are provided for rendering the tappet ii?) inoperative to restore the companion selector element as of that record, whereby upon the next selecting cycle of operations the driven member 25 and magazine it will be readjusted to the same selected position. For this purpose, I provide an actuating lever pivoted at 5i which is adapted to engage a pin or projection 52 rising from the tappet it for swinging said tappet to a position where it will be inactive to trip the detent dd to a restoring position. The movement of the lever 50 to a repeat position is efiected by a push rod 5%? guided in the plates 32', a suitablelatch means dd, 55 being provided for latching the lever in such position. When it is desired to restore the lever st to its initial position for rendering the tappet d5 operative to restore a given selector element to a non-selective position, the latch means Ed, W is released and for this purpose I provide a push rod 56 likewise supported in the plates 62 and functioning, when depressed, to release the latch means, a spring El connected to the lever 5d thereupon returning it to its initial position.
Should it be desired to effect the automatic selection of the records for playing them in rotation or successively, rather than by individual selection, I provide a means for automatically projecting the plurality of selector elements 3% to their the tappet iii and is adapted, at a predetermined time in the adjusted movement of the driven member 25, to be projected by a pintii borne by the driven member to a position in the path oi such tappet. By this construction, when the pin to $3 projects the trip lever 59 into the path oi. the tappet oi, the latter swings the trip lever in a direction to actuate the bar 58 to a position to simultaneously select the several selector ele ments St. in its normal position the par dti clears the several elements and does not interfere with their individual movements to and from selective positions. a
The tappet (ii is pivoted at td to the driving member 23 and it is connected by a link with hill the tappet 41% associated with the restoring deter-it dd, so that when the tappet 455 is projected by the actuating lever lid to its repeat position, the tap pet it is accordingly shifted to a position where it is ineffective to actuate the trip lever E Should the user, after selecting a given record or records by depressing the p rods ti, desire to sheet their cancellation, this may be eflected by depressing the push rod dd whose latch element lid is fixed on an oscillating cam element tit ti t) arranged in juxtaposition to the selector elements tit. By this construction, on depressing the push rod ht the cam member is ruched in a direction push rods for playing four desired records. By
this act the'companion selector elements are fig projected into a path for successively tripping the detent it during each selective operating cycle of the driven member 2%. When so tripped the detent releases the clutch dog 25 from the driving member and at the same time latches the dog 5 with a registering notch 35 in the bar dt, thereby arresting further movement of the driven memlcer and retaining the magazine it in its proper record-selected position. Thereafter the driving member continueson to the end of its stroke durpg ing the initial portion of which stroke the detent M is tripped to restore the then-engaged selector element to its inoperative position, i'ollo which the transfer arm. iii pichs up the selected record and transfers it to the turntable for play- 55 ing. After the record is played, it is returned to the stack by the transfer arm and thereafter the driving member 28 is returned to its initial position. During such return stroke its abutment 83 projects the clutch dog 28 into the recess 86 oi the driving member and causes the simultaneous return of the driven member and magazine id to their initial position, after which the selecting cycle is repeated to play the records selected. I
I claim as my invention:
1. In an automatic phonograph, a record magazine movable to a plurality of record-selecting positions, a reciprocating driven member operatlvely connected to said magazine for actuating it, a plurality of record selector elements pro- 70 jectable to positions along the path of travel of said reciprocating member 'for predetermining the corresponding selective positions of said magazine, means for actuating said driven memciprocating member in normal coupling engage ment with said actuating means and disposed for releasable engagement with a projected selector element for accordingly governing the movement of such member and the magazine to a corresponding record-selecting position.
2. In an automatic phonograph, a record maga zine movable to a plurality of record-selecting positions, a reciprocating driven member operatively connected to said magazine for actuating it, a plurality of record selector elements projectable to positions along the path of travel of said reciprocating member for predeterrnining the corresponding selective positions of said magazine, a reciprocating driving member releasably engageable with said reciprocating driven member, and means for normally latching said members for movement in unison to actuate said magazine to and from record-selecting positions, said selector elements when projected to operative positions cooperating with said latching means to unlatch said members and arrest the movement of the driven member relative to the driving member.
3. In an automatic phonograhh, a record magazine movable to a plurality of record-selecting positions, a reciprocating driven member operatively connected to said magazine for actuating it, a plurality of record selector elements projectable to positions along the path of travel of said reciprocating member for predetermining the corresponding selective positions of said magazine, a reciprocating driving member operatively engageable with said reciprocating driven member for actuating the, latter during a selecting cycle, and a releasable operating connection applied to one of the members and engageable with the other member for coupling said members to move in unison during such cycle and for uncoupling said members to permit an independent movement of the driving member relative to the driven member at another time, said selector elements when projected constituting trip elements for effecting the releaseof said operating connection at companion selected positions.
4. In an automatic phonograph, a record magazine movable to a plurality oi record-selecting positions, a reciprocating driven member operatively connected to said magazine for actuating -it, a plurality of record selector elements projectable to positions along the path of travel of said reciprocating member for predetermining the corresponding selective positions of said magazine, a reciprocating driving member releasably engageable with said reciprocating driven member and having a fixed latching element thereon. a companion movable latching element on said driven member normally engaging the latching element of the driving member to clutch such members for joint movement, and a detent applied to said driven member in operative engagement with said movable latching element and disposed for tripping engagement by one or another of the projected selector elements to unlatch the driven member from said driving member.
5. In an automatic phonograph, a record magazine movable to a plurality of record-selecting positions, a reciprocating driven member operatively connected to said magazine for actuating it, a plurality of record selector elements projectable' to positionsalong the path of travel of said reciprocating member for predetermining the corresponding selective positions of said magazine, a reciprocating driving member releasably engageable with said reciprocating driven member and having a fixed latching element thereon, a companion movable latching element on said driven member normally engaging the latching element of the driving member to clutch such member for joint movement, a detent applied to said driven member in operative engagement with said movable latching element and disposed for tripping engagement by one or another of the projected selector elements to unlatch the driven member from said driving member, and means engageable with a projected selector element for restoring it to its initial position subsequent to its having tripped said movable latching element to its unlatched position.
6. In an automatic phonograph, a record magazine movable to a plurality of record-selecting positions, a reciprocating driven member operatively connected to said magazine for actuating it, a plurality of record selector elements projectable to positions along the path of travel of said reciprocating member for predetermining the corresponding selective positions of said magazine, a reciprocating driving member releasably engageable with said reciprocating driven member and having a latching shoulder thereon, a latch plate disposed adjacent the path of travel of said driven member and having a row of looking notches therein, a latching element applied to said driven member and normally engageable in one position with said latching shoulder for coupling said members for unitary movement and adapted for engagement, in its released position, with said latch plate for holding said driven member in a selected position of adjustment of the magazine, and a detent applied to said driven member for controlling the release oi. said latching element from said driving member and the engagement thereof with said latch plate, said detent being disposed for abutting engagement with one or another of the projected selector elements to actuate the detent to such position.
7. In an automatic phonograph, a record magazine movable to a plurality of record-selecting positions, a reciprocating driven member operatively connected to said magazine for actuating it to a selective position of adjustment when said. member is moved in one direction and for returning the magazine to its initial position when said member is moved in the opposite direction, a reciprocating driving member releasably engageablewith said driven member, latching mechanism associated with said members for coupling the driven member with the driving member at predetermined times, and a plurality of projectible selector elements disposed along the path of travel of said members and for operative engagement, when projected to select position, with said latch mechanism for governing the release thereof at predetermined times in the selective stroke of the driving member to uncouple the driven member from said driving member, the latter having means thereon engageable with the latch mechanism on its return stroke for restoring such mechanism in coupling engagement with the driven member to eilFect the return of the magazine from its selected position to its initial position.
8. In an automatic phonograph, a record magazine movable to a plurality of record-selecting positions, a reciprocating driven member operatively connected to said magazine for actuating it to a selective-position of adjustment when said member is moved in one' direction and for reiii amiss turning the mac to its initial-position when said member is moved in the opposite direction, a reciprocating driving member releasably engageable with said driven member, a plurality of proiec'tible-selector elnts disposed lon'gitudh nally along the path of travel oi said members, and a latching mocha associated with said members for normally coupling them for unitary movement and releasably governed by said selector elements, d latch mechanism including a detent applied to said driven member and em gascable with a projected selector element during the selective stroke of such member for actuating said mecm to released position.
9. in an automatic phonograph, a record mag-= azine movable to a plurality of record-selecting positions, a reciprocating driven member operatively connected to said magazine for actuating it to a selective position of adjustment when said member is moved in one direction and for returning the magazine to its initial position when said member is moved in the opposite direction, a reciprocating driving member releasably engage= able with said driven member, a plurality of pro jectlble selector elements disposed longitudinally along the path oi travel of said members, a latching mechanism associated with said memhere for normally coupling them for unitary movement and releasably governed by said selector elements, said latch mechanism including a detent applied to said driven member and engageable with a projected selector element dur ins, the selective stroke of such member foractuating said mechanism to released position, and a trip element on said driving member adapted for engagement at a predetermined time in its return stroke with said latching mechanism for actuating it to its latched position.

In an automatic phonograph, a record magazine movable to a plurality of record-selooting positions, a reciprocating driven member 4 operatively connected to said magazine for actuating it, a plurality oi record selector elements projectable to positions along the path of travel of said reciprocating member for predetermining the corresponding selective positions of said magazine, a reciprocating driving member releasably engageable with said reciprocating driven momher and having a fixed lat element thereon, a companion movable latc element on said driven member normally engaging the late element of the driving member to clutch such members for joint movent, a detent applied to said driven member in operative'engagement with said movable latching element and disposed for tripping engagement by one or another oi the projected selector elements to unlatchthe driven member from said driving member, restoring means applied to said driven member for selective registering engagement with the selector elements for individually returning them to their initial positions subsequent to their having selectively tripped the movable latching element to its unlatched position, and a trip member applied to the driving member and engageable at a predetermined time in its selective stroke with said restoring means for actuating the latter to a position for projecting a companion registering selector element to non-selecting position.
11. In an automatic phonograph, a record magazine movable to a plurality oi. record-selecting positions, a reciprocating driven member operatlvely connecmd to said magazine for actuating it, a plurality or record selector elements projectable to positions along the path travelof said reciprocating member for prede the corresponding selective positions or said magazine, a reciprocating driving member releasably engageable with said reciprocating driven member and having a fixed latching element thereon,
a companion movable latching element on said I driven member normally engaging the latching element oi the driving member to clutch such members for joint movement, a decent applied to said driven member in operative engagement with said movable latching element and disposed ror tripping engagement by one or another of the projected selector elements to unlatch the driven member from said driving membenrestoring means applied to said driven member for selective registering engagement with the selector elements for individually returning them to their initial positions subsequent to their having selectively tripped the movable latching element to its unlatched position, a trip member applied to the driving member and engageable at a predetermined time in its selective stroke with said restoring means for actuating the latter to a position for projecting a companion registering selector element to non-selecting position, and a manually-controlled element disposed for operative engagement with said trip member for movof said reciprocating member for predetermining the corresponding selective positions of said canine, a reciprocating driving member releasably engageable with said reciprocating driven member and having a fixed latching element thereon, a companion movable latchingelement on said driven. member normally enber to clutch such members for joint movement, a detent applied to said driven member in operative engagement with said movable latching element and disposed for tripping engagement by one or another oi the projected selector elements to unlatch the driven member from said driving member, restoring means applied to said driven member for selective registering engagement with the selector elements for individually returning them to their initial positions subsequent to their having selectively tripped the movable latching element to its unlatched position, a trip member applied to the driving member and engageable at a predetermined time in its selective stroke with said restoring means for actuating the latter to a position for projecting a companion registering selector element to non-selecting position, a manually-controlled element disposed operative engagement with said trip member for moving it in an inoperative, non-tripping position whereby to render the restoring means inactive to return a projected selector element to its initial position and permitting the neat re-selection of the magazine to a. position companion to such selector element, and means for governing the movements so v gaging-the latching element of the driving memretaining said control element in its non-tripping position and a second actuating member operatively engageable with said latching device for releasing it from said control element to restore the same to tripping position.
13. In an automatic phonograph, a record magazine movable to a plurality of record-selecting positions, a reciprocating driven member operatively connected to said magazine for actuating it to a selective position of adjustment when said member is moved in one direction and for returning the magazine to its initial position when said member is moved in the opposite direction, a reciprocating driving member releasably engageable with said driven member, a plurality of manually-projectible selector elements disposed along the path of travel of said members, latching mechanism normally coupling said driven member with said driving member and including a detent disposed for engagement with a projected selector element during the selective stroke of said members for effecting the release of said mechanism at such selector-governed position, a trip element on said driving member adapted for engagement at a predetermined time in its return stroke with said latching mechanism for actuating it to its latched position, a shiftable member common to and operatively engageable with said selector elements for simultaneously moving them to projected positions for successively controlling, in rotation, the selective positioning of the respective records in the magazine, an actuating member disposed for engagement with said shittable member, and a trip device on said driving member engageable with said actuating member at a predetermined time in the selective stroke thereof for moving the same in a direction to automatically operate the selector elements to selective positions.
14. In an automatic phonograph, a record magazine movable to a plurality of record-selecting positions, means for actuating the magazine to its respective selective positions, including a driving member, a driven member releasably engageable therewith for movement to diflerent selective positions and operatively connected to the magazine, a plurality of record-selector elements individually movable to selective governing positions along the path of travel of said driven member and corresponding in number to the records borne by the magazine, means disposed along the path of travel of the driven member and having a row of latching elements thereon, and releasable coupling means operatively associated with said driving and driven members and governed by the selector elements for controlling the movement of the magazine in accordance with the record-selections made by the selector elements, the latter constituting trip elements for effecting the release of said coupling means at companion selected positions, said coupling means including a part engageable with,
one or another of the elements of said latching means in the released position of the coupling means for latching the driven member in a companion record-selecting position.
15. In an automatic phonograph, a record magazine movable to a plurality of record-selecting positions, a recoprocatory driving memher, a driven member operatively connected to said magazine and adapted to be releasably coupled to said driving member during predetermined times in its reciprocatory movements for actuating the magazine to and from selective positions of adjustment, releasable means for normally coupling said driven member to said driving member, and means for selectively controlling the release of said coupling means to govern the selective movements of said driven member and the selective positions of said magazine.
16. In an automatic phonograph, a turntable, a record magazine adjoining the turntable and movable to a plurality of record-selecting positions, means operable between the magazine and the turntable for transferring the records to and from a playing position, means operatively connected to said magazine for actuating it to its selective positions, and means for selectively controlling said actuating means to predetermine a given selective position of the magazine, said controlling means including a driving member, a driven member adapted for operative engagement with the magazine-actuating means, a plurality of record-selector elements corresponding in number to the records borne by the magazine, a releasable clutching assembly associated with said driving and driven members and governed by said selector elements for controlling the adjustable setting of the magazine in accordance with the record selections made by the selector elements, and interengageable means including a part of such clutch assembly and a part disposed along the path of travel of said driven member for latching the latter in a given selective position when said clutch assembly is released.
