The arrangement of the punch adapter 43 and the punch adapter retaining block 42 is such as to permit an easy removal of the punch 44 from the guide member 50 and the supporting block 37. The base member I0 is adapted to support a plate upon which the sheet metal member orthe work is adapted to be placed when points of location are to be determined. This plate 60 has two adjacent edges thereof 6| and 62 finished at an accurate 90 degree angle. A vertically extending wall 63 is attached tothe edge 62 of the plate 66 and a second vertically extending wall 64 is attached to the edge 6| of the plate 60. These walls may be separate members as shown on the drawings or they may be formed as an integral part of the plate 60. If the walls 63 and 64 are formed as integral parts of the base 60 then the'faces 65 and 66 are finished at an accurate 90 degree angle. If they are removable'as disclosed in the drawings the securing of the wallsto accurately- -finished faces of the plates 60 will automatically arrange the inner faces of the walls 63 and 64 at an accurate 90 degree angle. It may also be desirable to removably attach the walls 63 and 64 to the plate 60 and attach them to the plate 60 each time my device is to be used. Under these conditions however, it would be necessary to accurately determine the angularity of the walls with respect to each other and with respect to grooves provided in the base plate which are hereinafter more fully described.
The base plate 60 is provided with one set of parallel grooves 10 spaced equidistant from each other. These grooves are accurately positioned in parallel relation with respect to each other and with respect to the edge 62 of the base plate 60. A second set of grooves 1| are provided in the base plate 60 and are also equidistantly spaced from each other. These grooves II are accurately arranged in parallel relation with each other and with respect to the edge 6| of the base plate 60. It will thus be seen I have provided a. surface plate member with a plurality of equidistantly spaced parallel grooves positioned in alternate directions on the base plate which are arranged at accurate 90 degree angles with respect to each other and with respect to the accurately faced edges 6| and 62 of the base plate 60.
A plurality of end measuring rods, each having a determined length, are provided and are adapted to be positioned within the grooves 10 and H of the base plate. These rods are of various determined lengths and are indicated as groups of rods at 73, 14 and I5. noticed that in each groove in which measuring rods have been placed in my device that a sequence of rods are used thereby providing means whereby various combinations of rods having different determined lengths may be used to obtain various dimensions. One of the rods of each of the groups 13, 14 and 15 is a variable length rod and is what is known on the commercial market as an inside micrometer. The variable length rod can be positioned in any position within the group, but is preferably placed at one end as indicated in the drawings at 13a, 14a and 15a.
Within the base plate 66 there is provided a screw thread member 16 which is provided with an extension 11 extending upwardly into the plate 60. A die member 18 is removably positioned within an opening provided in the base plate 60 and is supported by the extension 17 of the screw thread member 16. The member 16 provides an adjustment of the top surface of the die 78 so that this surface will be in contact with the bottom face of the sheet metal work 80 positioned in my machine. A lock nut 19 is provided on the screw thread member 16 for retaining the member in position after adjustment of the top surface of the die 18 has been obtained.
My device as heretofore described-is particularly useful in the novel way in which it may be used in order to obtain and establish locations of various points upon a sheet of metal which has been placed in my device. Heretofore when laying out levers or other odd shaped pieces of manufacture it has been necessary for workmen to use many different types of tools for determining locations of holes and radius points. Many times locations for holes and radius points are positioned at odd angles which make it dinicult to obtain an accurate measurement and necessitated the use of articles such as sine bars,
height gauges, gauge blocks, angle irons, and many other precision instruments. By the use of my device it is possible to easily and accurately determine the location of any hole or radius point with respect to any other hole or radius point and to punch the hole at the located point without removing the work from the machine.
In my invention when my device is to be used for the purpose of laying out a lever and for positioning holes therein the punch, as indicated at 44, is removed and a sharp pointed prick punch Ma is placed in position. By loosening the lock nuts and 4| on the adjusting element 36 it is possible to turn the adjusting member 35 by hand or by the use of a small wrench. Movement of this element 36 will cause the carrier block 31 to move downwardly and carry the prick punch 44a into contact with the sheet metal work 89, thereby providing means for indicating a point on the work after it has been once established. The point of location established by the fixed relation position of punch 44a may be called a primary point of location from which all other points of location may be established by moving the work with respect to the primary point of location and controlling the measured movement of the work by the series of end measuring rods 13, M and 15.
In order to use my invention for purposes of layout work of levers and other odd shaped articles of manufacture a sheet of metal, such as I have indicated at 89, is provided with two adjacent edges thereof which have been accurately machined to an angle of 90 degrees. These edges for purposes of illustration are indicated at 8| and 82. The sheet metal work is then placed upon the base plate 60 and below the punch 44 or prick punch 44a which ever is being used in my device at that particular time. The work upon being placed under punch 44 or the prick punch 44a is provided with a primarily established point of measurement. The point which is taken as the primary point is not of particular importance since any one of the radius centers or centers for holes may be used as a primary point and all others will then be established using that as the basis. Once the device has been positioned under the punch and a primary point of location has been established the end measuring rods are positioned in the grooves ill and ll. A sufficient number of rods are used to accurately fill the space in anyone groove between the finished edge of the work 80 and a wall or edge of the base plate 60. In my invention I have used three series of end measuring rods which are located at 13,14 and 15 respectively, upon the base plate 6!]. In each series of end measuring rods there is one rod which is provided with an internal micrometer adjustment, this adjustable rod being indicated at 13a, Ma, and 15a. means for very accurately moving the work with respect to the punch 44. The walls 64 and 65 provide means whereby the end measuring rods may be always definitely positioned with respect to the punch 44, the primary point of location, since the rods abut these walls at all times when measurements are being made. By the arrangement and use of three measuring rods in the manner I have disclosed in my application I provide'means whereby the work 8i! may at any time be removed from the base plate 6E! and be replaced without'the necessity of reestablishingthe perfect parallel relation of thefinished sides BI and 82 of the work 80 with respect to the grooves 10 and II and I the walls 64 and 65. It may readily be seen that if the group of measuring rods T3 is either increased or decreased in length a second dimension may be obtained from the primary point which has previously been established on the work 80, and will be in alignment with and in a perfect straight line from the previously established point. My device provides a means for not only laying out work such as levers and other odd that the punch 44 -may be quickly and easily changed to provide for punching various sized holes or odd shaped openings. My-device thus becomes not only a device for establishing measurements but'is also a punch and die machine upon which holes may beaccurately located and after being located maybe punched in the sheet metal'without removing the workfrom the machine.
In my device I have providel a means for obtaining power for driving the punch through the metal sheet of work 80. This power developing device consists of the hand wheel 23 and the segment 28 which is a part thereof and the segment 29 which is mounted upon the drive shaft l6 of my device. The segment 28 co-acts with the segment 29, which is positioned on the drive shaft IS, in such a manner that when the hand wheel is rotated in a clock-wise direction, as viewed in Fig. 4, the shaft IE will also be rotated causing the eccentric IT to move the punch mechanism downwardly against the work 80. When the punch 44 has touched the work 80 the hand wheel may then be turned in a counterclockwise direction, the gap shown at 30 in Fig. 4, permitting this reverse rotation. The hand wheel may then be rotated quickly in a clockwise direction until the segments 28 and 29 engage, at which time the punch 44 will be driven through the sheet metal work 80.
It is thus seen that the device as disclosed in my application provides an improved form of punch and die machine and particularly improved in that I am able to obtain accurate measurements and locations of points on a sheet of metal while the sheet is in the machine and with a greatly reduced amount of effort than it has heretofore been necessary to put forth to establish locations of points.
While the embodiment of the present invention as herein disclosed, constitutes a preferred form, it is to be understood that other forms might be adopted, all coming within the scope of the claims which follow.
What is claimed is as follows:
1. An apparatus for determining points of location on a metal sheet which comprises a flat base plate upon which work can be positioned, a series of parallel grooves in said base plate, a second series of parallel grooves in said base plate arranged in an angular position of 90 degrees with respect to said first mentioned series of parallel grooves, measuring rods adapted to be positioned in said grooves, means on said base plate against which said rods abut when in position in said grooves, marking means positioned adjacent said base plate, and means for varying the length of said measuring rods whereby an element of work positioned on said base plate can be moved with respect to said marking means whereby a plurality of points of location can be accurately determined.
2. An apparatus for determining points of loca-,
tion on a metal sheet which comprises a flat base plate upon which work can be positioned, walls extending upwardly from said base plate and along at least two sides thereof, said walls having an angular position of 90 degrees with respect to each other, a series of parallel grooves in said base plate arranged in an angular position of 90 degrees with respect to one of said vertically extending walls, a second series of parallel grooves in said base plate arranged in an angular position of 90 degrees with respect to a second of said vertically extending walls, a measuring rod adapted to be positioned in a groove of one of said sets of parallel grooves, two measuring rods adapted to be positioned in grooves of said other set of parallel grooves, said three measuring rods providing a three point system of location for an element of work positioned on said base plate, marking means positioned adjacent said base plate, and means for varying the length of said meauring rods for causing movement of the element of work with respect to said marking means whereby a plurality of points of location are determined.
3. A device for measuring distances on a metal sheet which comprises a surface plate, adjacent extending sides on said plate, means on said plate adapted to position a metal sheet on said plate in a predetermined position, said means including a variable length rod adapted to be positioned between one of the sides of a sheet placed on said plate and one of said sides of said plate, two variable length rods adapted to be positioned between an adjacent side of a sheet placed on said plate and said other of said sides of said plate, marking means positioned adjacent said plate for providing a point of determination, said means for positioning the metal sheet providing the means for moving the sheet relative to said marking means, and means for causing measured movement of the sheet upon said plate with respect to said marking means.
4. A device for measuring which comprises a surface plate, measuring devices, means in said surface plate for positioning said meauring devices thereupon in a determined angular position with respect to each other, means positioned adjacent said surface plate for providing a point of determination, said meauring devices being arranged to position an element to be worked upon in a definite angular position with respect to said primary point of determination, said measuring devices having adjustable lengths to cause movement of the element to be worked upon with respect to said point of determination.
5. A device for locating the position of holes in a metal sheet which comprises a fiat base plate upon which an element of work is adapted to be positioned, a series of parallel grooves in said base plate, a second series of parallel grooves in said base plate arranged in an angular position of 90 degrees with respect to said first mentioned series of parallel grooves, measuring rods positioned in said grooves for positioning an element of work on said base plate, means on said base plate against which said rods can abut when in position in said grooves to establish location of said rods, a marking punch positioned above said base plate, and means to cause said marking punch to pierce the element of work which is positioned on the base plate thereby establishing the position of a hole in the work.
6. A device for measuring which consists of a fiat plate having two sets of parallel grooves arranged at an angle of 90 degrees with respect to each other, adjacent end walls for said plate, said walls arranged at an angle of 90 degrees with respect to each other and each of said walls arranged at an angle of 90 degrees with respect to one set of parallel grooves in said plate and parallel to said other set of parallel grooves, marking means positioned above said base plate, measuring rods of determined length positioned in said grooves, one end of said rods abutting said walls, said rods providing means for positioning an element of work in a definite position on said plate with respect to said marking means, and means for causing engagement of said marking means against the element of work to establish a point of location thereon.
7. An apparatus for determining points of location on a metal sheet which comprises a fiat base plate, said base plate having vertically extending walls along at least two sides thereof,

An apparatus for determining points of location on a metal sheet which comprises a fiat base plate, said base plate having vertically extending walls along at least two sides thereof, said walls having an angular position of 90 degrees with respect to each other, measuring rods for positioning an element to be worked upon in definite angular positions with respect to said walls, means in said base plate for retaining said measuring rods in an angular position of 90 degrees with respect to at least one of said vertically extending walls, said walls providing means to position one end of said rods, marking means positioned above said base plate, and means to cause said marking means to engage an element of work adapted to be positioned on said base plate to establish a point of location thereon.

An apparatus for determining points of location on a metal sheet which comprises a flat base plate, said base plate having vertically extending walls along at least two sides thereof, said walls having a determined angular position with respect to each other, measuring rods for positioning an element to be worked upon in definite angular positions with respect to said walls, means in said base plate for retaining said rods in a definite angular position with respect to said vertically extending walls, said walls providing means to position one end of said rods, marking means positioned above said base plate for providing a point of determination, said measuring rods having definite measurable positions with respect to said vertically extending walls and said marking means whereby a plurality of points of location can be accurately determined on an element of work positioned on said base plate.

An apparatus for determining points of location on a metal sheet which comprises a fiat base plate upon which work can be positioned, series of parallel grooves in said base plate, a second series of parallel grooves in said plate arranged in an angular position of 90 degrees with respect to said first mentioned series of parallel grooves, a measuring rod adapted to be positioned in a groove of one of said sets of parallel grooves, two measuring rods adapted to be positioned in grooves of said other set of parallel grooves, means on said base plate against which said rods can abut when in position in said grooves, said three measuring rods providing a three point systern of location for an element of work on said base plate, marking means positioned adjacent said base plate, and means for varying the length of said measuring rods whereby the element of work can be moved with respect to the marking means to establish a plurality of points of location on the element of work.

In a device of the character described, a surface plate, measuring devices, grooves in said surface plate for positioning said measuring devices thereupon in a determined angular position with respectto each other, and "means adjacent said plate against which said measuring devices can abut to establish primary location of said devices. r

In a device of the character described, a surface plate, a series of parallel grooves in said plate, a secondseries of parallel grooves insaid plate arranged'at an angular position of 90 degrees with respect to the first mentioned series of parallel grooves,-a measuring device adapted to be positioned in one of said first mentioned series of parallel grooves, a second and a third measuring device adapted to be positioned in two of said second mentioned series of parallel grooves, said measuring devices providing means adapted to position an element of work upon said plate.

In a device of the character described, a surface plate, a series of parallel grooves in said plate, a second series of parallel grooves in said plate arranged at an angular position of 90 degrees with respect to the first mentioned series of parallel grooves, a measuring device adapted to be positioned in one of said first mentioned series of parallel grooves, a second and a third measuring device adapted to be positioned in two of said second mentioned series of parallel grooves, each of said measuring devices having an adjustable length, said measuring devices providing means adapted to position an element of work upon said plate.

In a device of the character described, a surface plate, a series of parallel grooves in said plate, a second series of parallel grooves in said parallel grooves, a measuringdevice adapted to be positioned in one of said first mentioned series of parallel grooves, a second and a third measuring device adapted to be positioned in two of said second mentioned series of parallel grooves, and means adjacent said. plate against which said measuring devices can abut to establish primary location of said devices whereby said measuring devices provide means adapted to position an element of work upon said plate.
15. A device for locating the position of holes in a metal sheet which comprises a surface plate upon which an element of work is adapted to be positioned, measuring devices for positioning an element of work on said surface plate, grooves in said surface plate for positioning said measuring devices thereupon in a determined angular position with respect to each other, means adjacent said plate against which said measuring devices can abut to establish primary location of said devices, a marking punch positioned above said surface plate, and means to'cause said marking punch to pierce the element of work which is positioned on the surface plate thereby establishing the position of a hole in the work.

A device for measuring distances on a metal sheet which comprises a surface plate, adjacent extending sides on said plate, means on said plate adapted to position a metal sheet on said plate in a predetermined position, said means including a variable length rod adapted to be positioned between one of the sides of a sheet placed on said plate and one of said sides of said plate, two variable length rods adapted to be positioned between an adjacent side of a sheet placed on said plate and said other of said sides of said plate, marking means positioned adjacent said plate for providing a point of determination, said means for positioning the metal sheet pro- 'viding the means for causing measured movement of the sheet.
17. An apparatus for determining points of location on a metal sheet which comprises a fiat base plate upon which work can be positioned, a series of parallel grooves in said base plate, a second series of parallel grooves in said base plate arranged in an angular position of 90 degrees with respect to said first mentioned series of 10 parallel grooves, measuring rods adapted to be positioned in said grooves, means for position- GEORGE F.
