In Fig. 4 there is shown a slightly niodilied form of sleeve I8 replacing sleeve i4 and serving to space the rollers i6 properly about the eraser Il in the same manner by means of obliquely disposed slots therein. In this form of. sleeve however the periphery is not continuous but is interrupted by a slot extending obliquely throughout the length of the sleeve. Prior to insertion of the sleeve i8 into its position within the barrel Ill the diameter of the sleeve I8 may be extended as shown in Fig. 5. By compressing the sleeve to close the gap and form a substan-l tially complete circle the sleeve may be inserted within a barrel such as shown in Fig. 4 in which the sleeve rits Within an enlarged recess formed integrally or by a spinning operation within the barrel I9.
To make up sleeves I!! for insertion within barrels I9 in a manner permitting them to be formed in multiple lengths which may be out apart for individual sleeves I8 as needed the following may be employed. A long strip of. thin sheet metal 2Q may be slotted as shown at 2 l1 at spaced distances and at the proper oblique angle. Within the slot 2| may be placed tubular rollers 22 of the proper diameter and length to fit easily therein and function as indicated above. To retain the rollers 22 in proper position they may be mounted upon short lengths of wire 23 extending through their central holes and beyond the ends of the rollers z2. To hold the wires 23 in place which as shown are separate for each roller the longitudinal edges 24 of the strip Eil may be doubled over and crimped down upon the flat surface of the strip. mhort lengths of the strip 2B with the rollers 22 mounted therein may be cut oi and bent into lannular form substantially as indicated in Fig. 5.
In Fig. 8 there is shown a modied form of the means for supporting oblique rollers I6 in their places. In this embodiment the rollers I6 are retained individually in place by a separate supporting Wire passing centrally through each roller. The ends of each wire pass through the wall of the barrel il', which may be similar to that shown in Fig. 4, and headed over as indicated.
I claim as my invention:
1 An eraser holder for mechanical pencils comprising in combination, a barrel, a cylindrical eraser inserted therein, and rollers disposed obliquely within the barrel and frictionally engaging the eraser, whereby rotation of said eraser within said barrel will advance said eraser axially.
2. An eraser holder for mechanical pencils comprising in combination, a pencil barrel, a. cylindrical eraser inserted therein, a sleeve Within the barrel retained against axial movement, rollers disposed Within oblique slots Within said sleeve and frictionally engaging said barrel and eraser, whereby rotation of said eraser relative to said barrel will advance saideraser axially.
3. An `eraser Yholder for mechanical pencils comprising in combination, a pencil barrel, a cylindrical eraser inserted therein, a sleeve Within the barrel retained against axial movement therein and havingspaoed obliquely disposed slots in itswalls, rollers disposed within said slots and friotionally engaging the eraser and inner wall of said barrel, a wire passing through central holes of said rollers and around said sleeve to retain'said rollers in spaced relation to the eraser.
4.- An eraser holderfor pencils comprising in combination, a pencil barrel, an eraser inserted therein, obliquely disposed rollers disposed between and frictionally engaging said barrel and eraser, a retainer for said rollers comprising a thin metal sleeve, and individual wires retaining said rollers respectively within slots formed within -said sleeve.
5. An eraser holder for pencils comprising in combination, a pencil barrel, an eraser inserted therein, obliquely disposed rollers disposed between and frictionally engaging said barrel and eraser, a retainer for said rollers comprising a thin metal obliquely slotted strip having said rollers disposed and retained within said slots, said strip being bent into annular form to fit within said pencil barrel.
6. An eraser holder for mechanical pencils comprising in combination, a barrel having openings therein adjacent the eraser end, a cylindrical eraser inserted therein, and rollers disposed obliquely Within the barrel and frictionally engaging the eraser, whereby rotation of said eraser within said barrel will advance said eraser axially.
7. An eraser holder for mechanical pencils comprising in combinatioma pencil barrel having openings therein adjacent the eraser end, a cylindrical eraser inserted therein, a sleeve-Within thebarrel retained against axial movement therein and having spaced obliquely disposed slots in its walls, ro1lers disposed within said slots and frictionally engaging the eraser and inner wall of said barrel, a Wire passing through central holes of said rollers and around said sleeve to retain said rollers in spaced relation to the eraser.
