This invention relates to stapling devices. It is particularly directed to stapling devices for driving U-shaped Wire staples, for fastening together sheet material such as paper or fabric, or for tacking sheets onto wood or the like material which may be penetrated by the prongs of the staple.
In prior stapling devices jamming of two staples in the ejecting chute often results when a user does not force the plunger down completely, leaving a staple in said chute, and then again strikes the plunger. Such jamming occurs because the prior devices Were so constructed as to allow a second staple to move into the ejecting chute even though the rst, partially driven staple is still in the chute. It is therefore an object of this invention to provide a device oi' the character described in which jamming is prevented, the construction being such that unless a staple is substantially completely driven out of the ejecting chute, it will prevent the succeeding staple from moving into the chute, so that if the plunger is struck again it will merely restrike the original staple and complete the clinching operation.
A further object of this invention is to provide in a stapling device of the character described, a staple magazine comprising an outer guide member and an inner guide member attached thereto, and together forming a passage of inverted U-shaped transverse cross-section, for the staples, said outer guide member having continuous inwardly extending guide flanges at the top to guide the staples throughout the length of the magazine, and integral upstanding walls extending from the inner edges of said flanges, forming part of the plunger housing and carrying the anchor for the feed spring, said walls nevertheless being flush with the side walls of said outer guide member substantially throughout their entire height, whereby the parallel side walls of the plunger housing will contact the outer surfaces of said upstanding walls, as well as the outer surfaces of the side Walls of said outer guide member, thereby resulting in a compact, rugged and neat construction.
Another object of this invention is to provide in a magazine for a stapling device of the character described, a one piece inner guide member having a top wall and downwardly extending side flanges, the top Wall having punched tongues depressed into contact with the bottom wall of the outer guide member and riveted thereto, said bottom wall having upwardly recessed portions to receive the rivet heads, whereby no parts of the rivets extend either above said top wall or below said bottom wall, so as not to obstruct either the passage of the staples in the magazine or movement of the paper or other sheet to be stapled, beneath the magazine, the forward ends a of said guide members constituting part of the ejection chute for the staples, and the height of said guide members determining the height of said chute which is hence only little more than the height of a staple, whereby if a substantial l@ part of a staple is still in the ejection chute it will prevent another staple from moving in the chute.
Yet another object of this invention is to provide in a stapling device of the character de- Il@ scribed, a staple magazine having a passage of inverted U-shaped cross-section for the staples, and an ejection chute at the forward end of the magazine, the construction being such that the chute does not extend to any substantial dism tance below said passage, whereby to prevent jamming of the staples in said chute.
Still another object of this invention is to provide in a stapling device of the character described, a spring retracted driver carrying a plunger blade, and comprising a shank having a longitudinal groove, the driver housing having a lip projecting into said groove serving to stop the upward retraction of said driver.
A still further object of this invention is to m provide a compact, sturdy and durable device of the character described, which shall be relatively inexpensive to manufacture, easy to assemble, smooth and positive in operation, and yet practical and eiicient to a high degree in use.
Other objects of this invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements, and arrangement of parts which will be exempliim ed in the construction hereinafter described, and of which the scope of application will be indicated in the following claims.
In the accompanying drawing, in which is shown one of the various possible illustrative embodiments of this invention:

Referring now in detail to the drawing, l0 designates a stapling machine embodying the invention, for fastening together sheets with usual U-shaped staples |0a, having stapling portions |017 and prongs |00. 'I'he same comprises a base il having a pair of upstanding'spaced, apertured ears l2 at its rear end. At the forward end of the base is an anvil |3 formed with a usual cammed groove I4 to guide the prongs Illc of a staple Ilia, inwardly.
Mounted on the apertured ears l2 is a transverse pivot'pln or bolt l1, and pivoted to the bolt is a member I8 extending forwardly and disposed above the base Il. Member i3 comprises a staple magazine i5, for the staples lila. Said magazine comprises an outer guide member 20, and an inner guide member 2| together forming a longitudinal passage of inverted U-shaped cross-section through which the staples loa pass.
The outer guide member 25 comprises a pair of parallel side walls 22 interconnected by a bottom wall 23. Adjacent the rear end thereof, the side walls 22 are formed with downwardly extending ears 24 formed with aligned openings 25 to receive the pivoted bolt l1. The forward end of the bottom wall 23 terminates, as at 25, short of the forward ends 46 of the side walls 22; and the forward portions of said side walls are extended downwardly, as at 21, to the level of the underside of the bottom wall 23. Said bottom wall is formed with a plurality of upwardly raised or recessed portions 30, each formed with a rivet opening 3|, for the purpose hereinafter appearing.
Integrally formed with the upper ends of the side walls 22 are inwardly projection horizontal flanges 35 extending substantially throughout the length of the outer guide member 20.
Extending upwardly from, and integrally with the inner edges of the flanges 34, are a pair of upstanding parallel, substantially, similar, symmetrical disposed walls 35. Said Walls 35 are disposed rearwardly of the forward end of member 20. The main portions of the walls 35 are flushed with the side walls 22, the lower ends of said walls extending inwardly to the inner edges y of the flanges 34.
The walls 35 are formed with aligned pairs of openings 31, for the purpose hereinafter appearing. One of the walls 35 is formed with an enlarged circular opening 38, and the other wall is formed with a square opening 39, aligned therewith. The Walls 35 have front, vertical, inwardly extending aligned ilanges 40, for the purpose hereinafter appearing.
The inner guide member 2| is disposed within the outer guide member and has a top wall 4| and downwardly extending, parallel, side walls 42. The side walls 42 have vertical extensions 43 at their lower ends. Said inner guide member rests on the bottom wall 23 of the outer guide member and the portions 43 are disposed forwardly of the -bottom wall 23. 'Ihe top wall 4| of inner guide member 2| is parallel to the bottom wall 23 of the outer guide member 20. Said top wall 4| is formed with a pair of punched, downwardly depressed tongues 44 contacting the raised portions 30 of the bottom wall 23. Said tongues 44 are formed with openings 45 to receive therethrough, rivets 46 which attach said tongues to said bottom wall.
It will be noted that the lower heads of the rivets are received within the raised portions 30, so as not to project below the bottom wall 23. Furthermore, since the tongues 44 are' 4depressed below the top wall 4|, the upper heads of he rivets do not project above said top wall. Ae forward edge 41 of the inner guide member is in a plane rearward of the forward edge 48 of the side walls 22, by a distance substantially equal to the thickness of one of the staples. The forward ends 34a of the flanges 34, terminate short of the forward edges 48 of the side walls 22, by a distance equal substantially to the thickness of a staple, and are flush with the edge 41 of the inner guide member 2li.
It will now be understood that between the inner and outer guide members, there is formed an elongated passage of inverted U-shaped crosssection, through which the staples Illa pass, as they are urged forwardly, in the manner hereinafter appearing.
Attached to the upstanding walls 35, is a housing member 50 forming together with member i9. a housing or chamber 51 for a driver 5|, and also forming an ejection chute 52, as will be explained hereinafter.
The member 50 comprises a pair of parallel, vertical side walls 53, interconnected by a front, vertical wall 54. The side walls 53 of member 55 contact the outer surfaces of the side walls 35 of member 20, and are riveted thereto by rivets 55 passing through the opening 31. Said walls 53 also contact side walls 22 of the outer guide member. The wall 54 is spaced forwardly of the flanges 40 and contacts the forward edges 48 of the outer guide member 20. The lower edges of said walls 53 and front wall 54 are flush with the underside of bottom wall 23.
It will now be understood that the ejection chute 52 is formed between the inner surface of the front wall 54, and the forward edge 41 of the inner guide member 2| and end edges 34a of flanges 34. As the staples |0 are urged forwardly, the forwardmost staple will be pushed into the ejection chute 52, in which position it may be driven downwardly in a manner hereinafter appearing.
The front wall 54 is formed with a central, longitudinal outwardly grooved portion 54a, for the purpose hereinafter appearing. The upper end of wall 54 has an inwardly extending lip 56. It will also be seen that the driver chamber is formed between the wall 54 and the flanges 40.
Mounted in the openings 38, 39 is a transverse shaft 60, to which is connected the inner end of a feed spring 6| wound on said shaft. The outer end of the spring is connected to the usual feed member 62, having a handle portion 63 and a portion 64 slidably received in the staple passage. The spring 6| serves to feed the staples |0a forwardly in the usual manner.
'I'he driver 5| is slidably mounted in the chamber 51, between the flanges 40 and the front wall 54 of the housing member 50. Said driver comprises a plunger formed with a socket 1| in its undersurface and being formed with a head 12 at its upper end. Said plunger 10 is furthermore formed with a groove 13 in its front face adjacent its upper end. The lip 56 of the front wall 54 projects rearwardly into said groove 13 and serves to limit upward movement of the driver. On the head 12 is a rubber cap 14. Interposed between the lower end of the driver and the forward end of the outer guide member 20, is a coil compression spring serving to normally raise the driver. Fixed to the forward face of the driver, as by rivet T6, is a plate 'l1 projecting downwardly below the plunger and adapted to enter the ejection chute 52, when the driver is struck to drive a staple against the anvil I4'. The head of the rivet may project into groove 54a.
Interposed between the underside of the magazine i9 and the base Il, is a usual coil come pression spring 8U, to normally tilt the member i8 upwardly.
It will be noted that the height of the ejection chute 52 is substantially equal to the height of one of the staples, plus the thickness of the bottom wall 23. If the driver is struck downwardly with insufficient force to completely eject a staple, the staple in the ejection chute will prevent a succeeding staple from entering said chute, and hence, when the driver is struck again, the blade will merely drive the `partially ejected staple through to complete the clinching operation.
In prior stapling devices, the ejection chute extends to such a distance below the lower ends of the normal position of the staple, that one staple can be driven downwardly to a position where it is wholly below the lower ends of the staples, allowing a succeeding staple to enter the ejection chute when the driver is lifted, so that upon again striking the driver, the two staples in the ejection chute will become jammed. With the present construction, jamming is effectively eliminated since the staple has to be driven substantially wholly out of the machine before it clears the succeeding staple sufficiently to allow said succeeding staple to enter the ejection chute.
Since the heads of the rivets d6 are disposed wholly above the bottom wall 23 and wholly below the top wall di, there is no obstruction to sliding movement of the device onto papers to be stapled, and there is no obstruction as `to passage of staples in the staple passage.
It will be noted furthermore that the flanges of the outer guide member 2t extend substantially throughout the length of said guide member, forming a continuous guide for the saddle portions of the staples. Nevertheless, the upstanding walls 35 are integrally formed with the member 20, making for rigid construction. Said walls 35 are flush with the side walls 22 of the outer guide member, and the side walls 53 contact the walls 35, as well as the side walls 22, forming a smooth, compact and rugged construction.
' It will thus be seen that there is provided a device in which the several objects of this invention are achieved, and which is well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use.
As various possible embodiments might be made of the above invention, and as various changes might be made in the embodiment above set forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawing is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A stapling machine comprising a base, a member pivoted thereto comprising an outer guide member having a bottom wall, side walls, and inwardly extending flanges at the upper ends of the side walls, an inner guide member within said outer guide member, said inner guide mem-- ber having a top wall disposed below the flanges of the outer guide member, and parallel. side walls spaced inwardly of the side walls of said outer guide member, the top wall of said guide member having downwardly punched depressed tongues contacting the bottom wall of said outer guide member and fastened thereto, said outer guide member being formed with integral, upwardly projecting walls extending from the inner edges of said flanges, whereby said flanges are continuous substantially throughout the length of said outer guide member, and a housing member having parallel, side walls receiving said upwardly projecting walls and fastened thereto, said housing member having a front wall contacting the forward edges of the side walls of said outer guide member, said flanges terminating short of the forward edges of the side walls of said outer guide member, and the forward end of said inner guide member terminating short of the forward edges of the side walls of said outer guide member, the lower edges of the side walls and front wall of said housing member being substantially flush with the underside of the bottom wall of said outer guide member.
2. In a stapling machine, a staple magazine comprising an outer guide member having a bot tom wall, parallel side walls extending upwardly from said bottom wall, and inwardly projecting aligned flanges extending from the upper ends of said side walls, and an inner guide member within said outer guide member, said inner guide member having a top wall spaced below said flanges, and a pair of parallel side walls spaced inwardly from the side walls of said outer guide member, said flanges terminating short of the forward edges of the side walls of said outer guide member, and the forward end of said inner guide member terminating short of the forward edges of the side walls of said outer guide member, said top wall having downwardly disposed tongues, and rivets connecting said tongues to the bottom wall of said outer guide member.
3. In a stapling machine, a staple magazine comprising an outer guide member having a bottom wall, parallel side walls extending upwardly from said bottom wall, and inwardly projecting aligned flanges extending from the upper ends of said side walls, and an inner guide member within said outer guide member, said inner guide member having a top wall spaced below said flanges, and a pair of parallel side walls spaced inwardly from the side walls of said outer guide member, said flanges terminating short of the forward edges of the side walls of said outer guide member, and the forward end of said inner guide member terminating short of the forward edges of the side walls of said outer guide member, said top wall having downwardly disposed tongues, and rivets connecting said tongues to the bottom wall of said outer guide member, said bottom wall having upwardly recessed portions to receive the lower heads of said rivets, whereby said rivets do not project below said bottom wall.
4. A stapling machine comprising an outer guide member having a bottom wall and side walls, and inwardly extending, aligned flanges at the upper ends of said side walls, an inner guide member within the outer guide member and having a top wall disposed below said flanges, and downwardly extending side walls spaced inwardly from the side walls of said outer guide member, said outer guide member being formed with a pair of upwardly projecting walls extending from the inner edges of said flanges,

a housing member having a pair of parallel, side walls receiving and attached to said upstanding walls, said housing member having a front wall spaced from said upstanding walls and contacting the forward end of said outer guide member, said anges terminating short 0f the forward edges of the side walls of said outer guide member, and the forward edge of said inner guide member terminating short of the forward edges of the side walls of said outer guide member, a plunger slidably mounted within the chamber formed between the front wall of said housing member andV said upstanding walls, and a blade on said plunger adapted to press a staple into the ejection chute formed between said front wall and the forward edges of said flanges and inner guide member.
5. A stapling machine comprising an outer guide member having a bottom wall and side walls, and inwardly extending aligned flanges at the upper ends of said side walls, an inner guide member with the outer guide member, and having a top wall disposed below said anges, and downwardly extending side walls spaced inwardly from the side walls of said outer guide member, said outer guide member being formed with a pair of upwardly projecting walls extending from the inner edges of said flanges, a housing member having a pair of parallel, side walls receiving and attached to said upstanding walls, said housing member having a front wall spaced from said upstanding Walls and contacting the forward end of said outer guide member, said flanges terminating short of the forward edges of the side walls of said outer guide member, and the forward edge of said inner guide member terminating short of the forward edges of the side walls of said outer guide member, a plunger slidably mounted Within the chamber formed between the front wall of said housing member and said upstanding walls, and a blade on said plunger adapted to press -a staple into the ejection chute formed between said front wall and the forward edges of said flanges and inner guide member, said plunger being formed with a groove on its front face, and said front wall having a rearwardly extending lip at its upper end projecting into said groove.
