The present invention relates to sheet assembling apparatus and more particularly to apparatus of this vcharacter which is adapted to assemble a-plurality of sheets in groups so that a portion of each sheet adjacent to one edge is exposed to receive a legend, the remainder of the surface of each sheet, except the top sheet, being covered. The number of sheets in a group may be varied to t the particular purpose for which the` sheets are used. It is desirable also to be able to vary the Width of the exposed portion of each sheet so that the legend may constitute one or more lines of data, as desired. It is desirable also that the apparatus operate effectively to produce unit strips composed of such sheets wherein the size of the sheet itself may be varied by simple adjustment of the apparatus. The several sheets of each group or unit are secured to each other along one edge, preferably an edge which is at right angles to the portions which are exposed.
The present invention has for its object the provision of an apparatus and method whereby a web of paper or likematerial may be cut oif` and assembled into unit strips comprising several sheets arranged in overlapping relationship. The
apparatus preferably comprises means for advancing the web, means for cutting the web, and cooperating means for applying an adhesive to secure the several sheets of a unit together and for nally arranging the sheets severed from the web in the desired overlapping relation.

After the sheets are cut, an advancing and overlapping device arranges the several sheets in overlapped relation and discharges them from the machine. The overlapping mechanism'also preferably acts to secure one sheet to another by pressing the adhesive carrying portions thereof tightly together. 'I'he adhesive applying means is so arranged and controlled that without interruption of the continuous operation of the machine the adhesive is periodically left olf the web for a distance equivalent to the lengthwise extent of the sheet along the web.

present invention is embodied in and carried out by a machine of the general type hereinbefore described. The said machine is adapted to take a web of paper 20 from any suitable source such as a roll and advance the same step by step byA by means of the slitters and 26.
in the direction of movement of the web 28 there are provided slitting knives 25 and 26 which are carried by suitable shafts 21 and 28 that are journalledin the side frames 23 and 24. The fced rolls 2| and 22 may be of any suitable form and may be driven in any suitable manner to provide the necessary step by step advancement of the web. As an example of a suitable drive mechanism for this purpose, the roll 22 is shown as provided with a sprocket wheel 29 which is driven by a sprocket chain 38. The sprocket chain 38` is adapted to be driven from a sprocket wheel 3| that is mounted on a shaft 32. The shaft 32 ls journalled in the side frames 23 and 24. It also carries a gear wheel- 33. The gear wheel 33 meshes with a rack 34 which is mounted toreciprocate in a guide 34a. 'I'he rack 34 is adapted to be driven from a shaft 35 by means of an arm 36. The rack is adjustably connected to the arm 36, a slot 31 being provided in the arm, and a pin 38 being provided on the rack for making this adjustment. 'I'he gear 33 is connected to the shaft 32 by means of a one-way drive connection or over-running clutch so as to drive the shaft 32 only on the' downward stroke of the rack 34.
,` The shaft35 is adapted to be driven by any suitable means, not shown, such for example, as an electric motor. This shaft is also adapted to operate a guillotine shear 48 by which the web is severed atthe desired point. The shear comprises a lower knife supporting bar 4| having a knife 43 therein, an upper guide bar 43a, a knife supporting member ,44. and an upper knife blade 45. The bar 44 is adapted to be actuated by means of two rods 46, one at eachside of the frame of the machine. Each rod 46 is actuated by a lever 41 which is pivotedl by a pin 48 to the adjacent side frame of the machine. The vlever 41 carries a roller 49 which is adapted to engage `a cam 58 on the shaft 35. Springs 5| hold the levers 41 in raised position. The guillotine shear 48is a separate unit having its own standard or base 52 which is mounted adjacent to the ends of the side frames 23 and 24. The shaft 35 and the levers 41 are carried by laterally projecting brackets 53 on the standard 52.
The web 28 is adapted to be divided vwhenever it is wide enough to provide two or more sheets These slitters are driven by gear wheels 54 and 55 which are fixed on the shafts 21 and 28 respectively.
The gear 54 is driven by the gear 55 which is driven by ra pinion 56 that is mounted on the side frame 23 by means of a stub shaft 51. The pinin 56 is driven by a gear 58 which is mounted on a stub shaft 59. The gear 58 meshes with a gear 68 which is fixed to a smaller gear 6| and a bevel gear 62. The gears 68, 6| and 62 are carried by a shaft 63 which is mounted in the side frame 23. These gears are adapted to be driven by a bevel gear 64 which is 'mounted on a main drive shaft 65 that extends alongside the machine and which is adapted to be operated from The adhesive applying mechanism 18 is shown y more fully and in detail in Figs. 10-14 inclusive. The adhesive applying mechanism comprises a glue pot 1| which is mounted on two brackets 12 and 13 which are, in turn supported .by the side frames 23 and 24. The glue pot 1I is adapted to receive a supply of adhesive from a bottle 14 and may be suitably covered except where the bottle enters the same. The glue pot 1| contains an annular chamber 15 in which there is through which the roller 16 contacts two rollers 18 and 19 which are mounted on a shaft 88. The shaft 80 is, in turn, supported by two arms 8| and 82 that are carried by the brackets 12 and 13. The arms 8| and 82 are adjustable so as to vary the tension between the roller 16 and the' rollers 18 and 19.
.The roller 16 is mounted on a shaft 83 which has a sprocket wheel 84 thereon that is also journalled an adhesive applying roller 16. The chamber 15 has a longitudinal slot 11 therein driven by the sprocket chain 38 so as to continuand work to the center of the rollers 18 and 19' to return into the glue pct 1 I. Thus it is possible to maintain the glue pot and its contents substantially free of air circulation which would tend to harden the glue or adhesiveused and make it necessary to empty the glue pot after each short run, if the machine were stopped for any period of time.
The glue pot 1| is held in place on the brackets 12 and 13 by means of clamps, one of which is indicated at 86 in Fig. 10. It will be understood that there is a similar clamp 81 at the opposite end of the cylindrical chamber 15. These clamps 86 and 81 are fastened to the brackets 12 and 13 respectively by bolts 88 that are in turn supported upon blocks 89, one at each side of the frame, the blocks being bolted to the brackets 12 and 13 respectively.
Referring now to the shaft 88, this shaft also serves to support two arms 98 and 9| which are fixed to the shaft to rock therewith. The rollers 18 and 19 are free to turn on the shaft since they must turn in response to their engagement with the roller 16. A lever arm 92 is clamped on the shaft 88 outside the bracket l12 so that by rocking the arm 92, the shaft 88 can be rocked as well. The arms 98 and 9| support a shaft 93, this shaft being journalled in the ends of the arms 98 and 9|. An adhesive applying disc 94 is slidable endwise of the shaft 93 so it can be positioned at the proper spot with respect to the web 28. This disc has `a hub 95 which is split and is adapted to be clamped on the shaft 93 by means of a bolt 96 (see Fig. 10).
'I wo arms 91 and 98 are mounted at the tops of the brackets 12 and 13 and extend outwardly over the arms 98 and 9|. These arms, at their free ends, carry a shaft 99 which is free to rotate in the arms. On the shaft 99 there is provided a longitudinally adjustable disc |88 that is adapted to be set opposite the adhesive applying disc 94 so as to support the web when it is pressed upwardly by the disc 94. The disc 34 is moved upwardly into engagement with the'web 28 at intervals by means of the cam 61-and the lever arm 69, which has a roller 69a riding on the cam 61. Upon' each rotation of the cam 51 the large circular part o f the cam will move the lever 69 upwardly, thus causing the bar |04 to pivot around the pin |06 to lift the link |09 and cause the gluing disc 94 to engage the lower surface of the `web 20. This position is shown in Fig. 10 of the drawings. As the roller 69a passes oi the enlarged part of the cam 51, the lever 59 is permitted to drop, and the link |09 pulls down on the lever arm 92 to move the gluing disc 94 away from the web 20. 'I'he shape of the cam 61 will determine the period of engagement of the gluing disc with the web because the cam itself is driven at a constant rate and is preferably synchronized with the advance of the web 20. It is desirable to have the gluing disc 94 spread the adhesive along a line extending lengthwise of the web so that for each engagement of the 'disc with the web the line of adhesive is positioned at one side edge on the ultimate sheet which is a part of a unit strip, and the length of the adhesive is slightly less than the width of that part of the sheet which is not exposed after the sheets are overlapped.

The slot ||5 is for timing length of adhesive applied to the web relating to length of the sheet to be cut. A long sheet may be covered asmuch as eighty or ninety per cent while a short sheet may be covered only fty or sixty per cent of total length. The link ||4 connects to a bellcrank ||1 that is pivoted on a stub shaft ||9 carried by the side frame 23. The shaft ||8 also vhas a gear and ratchet wheel ||9 thereon with which a pawl |20 on the bell-crank ||1 is adapted to engage. The pawl |20 directly engages the 'gearteeth o! the wheel ||9 so that no intermediate ratchet teeth are needed. The wheel ||9 meshes with another gear wheel |2|. The gear wheel |2| is mounted on a swinging arm |2|a. The-arm |2|a is held in adjusted position by a bolt |22. This bolt is adjustable in a slot |220l f in the frame. When it is` desired to change the number of sheets which will be connected in a unit strip, the gear |23 may be changed. 'That is, one gear |23 is removed and another one having a differ'ent number of teeth is substituted in its place. For example, the gears |23 are provided with different numbers of teeth, the smallest gear having eighteen teeth, and the largest gear having fifty teeth. If the operator desires to make groups with a smallnumber of sheets, say seven, he uses a disc |25 having three notches and a gear |23 having twenty-one teeth. The same gear will give groups of twenty-one with a disc |25 having only 'one notch.
When the sheets are cut by the blades 43 and 45, they already have the adhesive along' one side edge. The length of the sheet is also already determined. The remain/ing operation to be performed is the overlapping of the sheets the de-v v sired amount and pressing them together so as to cause them to adhere where the adhesive vhas been applied. The overlapping mechanism comprises two side frames |33 and |34 upon which a platform |35 is mounted.- Over the platform |33 there is' provided across bar or stop |36. The cross bar |33 is adapted to be moved up and down to receive and temporarily hold overlapped sheets. It acts also as a stop to maintain the sheets in alignment after they are cut from the web. The platform |35v which lies beneath the bar |36 is supported by the side frames |33 and |34. Two blocks |31 and 33 are bolted to the side frames |33 and |34. The platform |35 has pins |39 at its opposite ends. which pins are adapted to nt into corresponding holes |40 provided in the blocks` |31 and |33 (see Figs. 3 and 7*). i
The cross bar-|36 is carried by two adjustable arms. |4| and |42 (see Figs. 3 and 8). The arms |4| and |42 are fixed on a rock shaft |43 which is journalled in the side frames |33 and |34. For purposes of adjustment, the arms I4| and |42 are made in two overlapping sections, as indicated in Fig. 3, and are `adapted to be adjusted as to length and held in position by a plurality of bolts |44 and' |45. 'I'hus when the advance of the web by the feed rolls 2| and 22 is changed, the cross bar |36 is moved toward or away from the shear 40 so that the distance from the shear 43 to the bar |36 will equal the distance the web is advanced. The ro'ck shaft |43 has a-lever arm |46 secured thereto outside the frame |33. The lever arm |46 has a pin |41 thereon which pivots a block |43. The block |43 has an opening therein which receives a reduced portion |49 of a link |53. A spring |5| is mounted on the reduced portion |49 of the link'l50 and is held under' compression by a nut |52. The link |50 is adapted to raise the lever arm |46 by having the large portion thereof engage the block |43, but when the link |50 is pulled downwardly it pulls down on the lever arm |46 through the spring |5|, thus giving a yielding downward pressure to the cross bar |36 in pressing it down upon sheets which build upl between the cross bar |36 and the platform |35. Suitable means hereinafter more fully described are utilized to move the link |50 up and down.
A sheet advancing mechanism is provided whereby sheets which are cut off by the knives 43 and 45 may be' advanced while the block |36 .is raised. This sheet advancing mechanism comprises a horizontally movable plate |53 and spaced gripping elements |54 and |55 which are veritically movable with respect tothe plate |53 so as to receive sheets therebetween and then grip the same. The gripping elements |54 and |55 move horizontally with the plate |53 so as to advance sheets gripped thereby. The plate 53 is supported by two sliding blocks |56 and |51 which ar'e guided in grooves |53 and |59 that are provided in the side frames |34 and |33 respecl to the lower surface of the brackets |62 and |63 immediately outside the side frames by screws |65. The brackets |32 and |33 also carry depending guides |1| and |12 respectively. The guides |1| and |12 receive two rods |-13 and |14 which are verticaly slidable in the guides and which have elongated flat plates and |16 at their lower ends. These threaded ends receive hollow internally and externally threaded screws |19 and |30 so that the screws |19 and |30 may be vertically adjustable with respect to the rods v|13 and |14. The cycle of operation continues, with each out 50 sheetbeinglaid upon the preceding sheet and bothof; them advanced. There is no interruption-of the process in order to divide the over- .lapped stream of sheets into, a number ofnnits. "Thisaautomatically occurs due to the fact that the-adhesive applying mechanism skips a sheetatthe desired intervals, and of course that sheet .will not stick to the preceding sheets that have been overlapped.
L The line of overlapped sheets, in passing from the machine, is guided over an inclined plate 2M which overlies the upper end of a second inclined plate 2|5. A spacer 2|6 determines the drop vvfrom the plate 2|'4 to the plate 2|5. Near the ylower end of the plate2|5 there is arranged an adjustable stop 2|1 which may be moved toward or away from the spacer 2|6. The distance between the spacer 2|6 and the stop 2|1 is set to be slightly more than the total length of a unit strip. As each unit strip strikes the stop 2|1 its rear end will drop below the lower end of the plate 2&5 and allow the next unit strip to slide over the top thereof. In this fashion, the several Y strips can be piled on the plate 2|5 and removed at` intervals by the operator.
While I have shown and described one form of my inventing, it am be understood that it is capable of many modifications. Changes, there- 4fore, in the constrction and arrangement may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as describedl in the appended claims, in which it is my intention to claim all novelty inherent in my invention as broadly as possible, in view 4oi' the prior art.
I claim: v
1. A machine of the character described adapted toproduce units'of sheets wherein each sheet overlapped with respect to the adjacent sheets and wherein the several sheets are'temporarily. secured together, said machine comprising a web advancing means, adhesive applying means adapted to apply adhesive at spaced intervals to said web, a cutting device adapted to cut the web into sheets of the desired size, and means receiving theA cut sheets from said cutting device, said llast named means being operable to move the sheets awayfrom the cutting device step by stepv whereby succeeding sheets are over- `lapped with previously cut sheets.

A unit strip machine comprising a web advancing device, a device adapted-to applygadhe.- sive lengthwise of said .web at spaced intervals thereon, control means operable to prevent application of adhesive to the web for one of said intervals after a predetermined number of'intervals, means to cut said web between the lines of adhesive, and overlapping means for arranging the sheets formed thereby in overlapped relation, said overlapping `means comprising a stop member for -aligning the cut sheets, gripping means operable to grip several sheets of 'a unit and advance the same, said gripping means and said stop means being alternately in position toA hold the several, sheets of a unit together.
5. A'machine of the character described adapted to produce units of sheets wherein each sheet is overlapped with respect to the adjacent sheets and wherein the several sheets are temporarily secured together, said machine comprising a web advancing means, -a cutting device adapted vto cut the web into sheets of the desired size, and.
adhesive applying means adapted to apply adhesive lengthwise of theweb at spaced intervals.
6. A unit strip machine comprising a web advancing device, a device adapted to apply adhesive lengthwise of said web at spaced intervals thereon, control means operable to prevent application of adhesive to the web for one of said intervals after a predetermined number of intervals, means to cut said web between the lines of adhesive, and overlapping means for arranging the sheets formed thereby in overlapped relation, said control means being operable to vary said predetermined number of intervals.
7. In a machine of the character described adapted to produce units'ofsheets wherein each sheet is overlapped with respect to the adjacent sheets and wherein the several sheets are temporarily secured together, an aligning and holding member, means .to feed sheets to said member, a sheet advancing clamp adapted to grip sheets held and aligned by said first named member, and means to close and advance said clamp when the first named member is released from the sheets.
8. A machine of the character described adapt-A ed to produce units of sheets wherein each sheet is overlapped with respect to the adjacent` sheets and wherein the several sheets are temporarily secured together, said machine comprising a web advancing means, adhesive applying means adapted to apply adhesive at spaced intervals to ,said web, a cutting device adapted to cut the web into sheets of the desired size, means receiv- ,ing the cut sheets from said cutting device, saidl last named means comprising, a holding member adapted to hold several sheets together in overlapped position to receive a freshly cut sheet in overlapped relation to the held sheets, and a clamping and advancing member operable to clamp the freshly cut sheet to the held sheets whereby to cause adherence of the sheets having adhesive between them, said last named member being operable to feed the sheetsv clamped thereby to the holding member.
9. A` machine of the character described adapted to produce units of sheets wherein each sheet is overlapped with respect to the adiacent sheets newly cut and previously cut sheets.
10. A machine of the character described adapted to produce units of sheets wherein each sheet is overlapped with respect to the adjacent sheets and wherein the several sheets are temporarily secured together, said machine comprising a web advancing means, adhesive applying means adapted to apply adhesive at spaced lintervals to said web, a cutting device adapted to cut the web into sheets of the desired size, means receiving the cut sheets from said cutting device, said last named means comprising gripping members alternately gripping said sheets, one member engaging and holding previously cut sheets stationary while a sheet is being cut, and the other member engaging and advancing the newly cut and previously cut sheets, and means to vary the advancing movement of said last named member.
11. A unit strip machine comprising a web advancing device, a device adapted to apply adhesive lengthwise of said web at spaced intervals thereon, control means operable to prevent application of adhesive to the web for one of said intervals after a predetermined number of in.
tervals, means to cut said web between the lines of adhesive, overlapping means for arranging .the sheets formed thereby in overlapped' relation,
saidlast named means comprising gripping members alternately gripping said sheets, one member engaging and holding previously cut sheets stationary while a sheet is being cut, and the other member engaging and advancing the newly cut and previously cutsheets.

A unit strip machine comprising a web advancing device, a device adapted to apply adhesive lengthwise of said web at spaced' intervals thereon, control means operable to prevent application of adhesive to the web for one of said intervals after a predetermined number of intervals, meansto cut said web between the lines of adhesive, overlapping means for arranging the sheets formed thereby in overlapped relation,
said last named means comprising gripping members alternately gripping said sheets, one member engaging and holding previously cut sheets stationary while a sheet is being cut, and the other member engaging and advancing the newly cut and previously cut sheets, and means to varythe advancing movement of said last named member.

A unit'strip machine comprising a web advancing device, a device adapted to apply adhesive lengthwise of said web at spaced intervals thereon, control means operable to prevent application of adhesive to the web for one of said intervals after a predetermined number of intervals, means to cut said web between the lines of adhesive, overlapping means for arranging the sheets formed thereby in overlapped relation, said last named means comprising gripping members alternately gripping said sheets, one member engaging and holding previously cut sheets stationary while a sheet is being cut, and the other member engaging and advancing the newly cut and previously cut sheets, said control means being operable to vary said predetermined number of intervals.
14. A unit strip machine comprising a web advancing device, a device adapted to apply adhesive lengthwise of said web at spaced intervals.
thereon, control means operable to prevent application of adhesive to the web for one of said intervals after a predetermined number of intervals, means to cut said web between the lines of adhesive, overlapping means for arranging the sheets formed thereby in loverlapped relation, said last named means comprising gripping members alternately gripping said sheets', one member engaging and holding previously cut sheets stationary while a sheet is being eut, and the other member engaging and advancing the newly cut and previously cut sheets, and means to vary the advancing movementof said last named member, said control means being operable to vary said predetermined number of intervals.
15. A method of producing units of sheets from a web wherein each sheet is overlapped in one direction with respect to adjacent sheets, and wherein the several sheets are secured together,
said method comprising the application of adher- 6 ering the web into sheets, stacking said sheets one upon another as they are severed, and advancing the stacked sheets the amount of overlap after each/sheet is received.

A method of producing units of sheets from a web wherein each sheet is overlapped in one direction with respect to adjacent` sheets, and wherein the several sheets 'are secured together along a line parallel to the direction of overlapping of the sheets, said method comprising the application of adhesive material to one side of the web adjacent one longitudinal edge thereof, leaving the `adhesive ofi of a sheet length of web at predetermined intervals lengthwise of the web, severing the web into sheets, stacking the sheets one upon another as they are severed, and advancing the stacked sheets the amount of overlap after each sheet is received.

A method of producing units of sheets from a web wherein each sheet is overlapped in one direction with respect to adjacent sheets, and wherein the several sheets are secured together along a line parallel to the direction of overlap-A ping of the sheets, said method comprising the application oi adhesive material to one side of the web adjacent one longitudinal edge thereof, leaving the adhesive oil of a. sheet length of web at predetermined intervals lengthwise of the web, severing the web into sheets, stacking the sheets one upon another as they are severed, and ad-` vancing the stacked sheets the amount of overlap after each sheet is received, feeding said overlapped sheets over a ledge and against a stop spaced from said ledge whereby the last sheet of each* unit may drop from the advance sheet of the next unit, and thereby stacking the units one upon another.
19. A method of producing units of sheets from a, web wherein each sheet is overlapped in one direction with respect to adjacent sheets, and wherein the several sheets are secured together along a line parallel to the direction of overlapping of the sheets, said method comprising severing the web into sheets, stacking'said sheets one upon another as they are severed, advancing the stacked sheets the amount of overlap after each sheet is received, and securing said overlapped sheets to each other in units of a predetermined number oi! sheets.
