CASE FOR TOILET ACCESSORIES Filed Oct. 22, 1958 IN VENTOR. Hmma .52 AVA/G,
ATTORNEY.
Patented June 18, 1940 UNITED STTES CASE FOR'TOILET Aoosssoaiss Harold S. King,
Asbury Park, N. J.
Application October 22, 1938, Serial No. 236,407
2 Claims.
This invention relates to folding article holding cases and has particular reference to a case, as of the manipulable and easily portable type, for holding toilet articles or accessories for travelers.
One of the objects of the invention is the pro vision of an organization in which the constituent elements are so arranged, structurally and functionally, as to give improved results with material which may be inexpensively manufactured, and which may constantly continue to operate satisfactorily without particular attention.
The case includes a body portion of known laminated or built up, substantially rigid type, which is provided with hinge or fold lines, and a feature of the invention resides in intermediate swingable members and coacting article holding straps, said members being disposed laterally or at opposite sides, in the particular embodiment at present selected for disclosure, between'top and 20 bottom structures.
- Articles of the nature herein referred to, such as liquid containers or bottles, are frequently substantially rectangular in cross section; other articles, such as cylindrical powder containers or the like, having also angular features, as between vertical side walls and flat top and bottom members; and another object of this invention is to utilize the. aforesaid straps and intermediate members insuch manner as to advantageously cooperate with the flat surfaces of the angular articles.
An outer side wall member, hinged from the bottom wall, and with a top auxiliary flap, take vertical and horizontal positions respectively, as in the closed position of the device, and a coacting strap is also hinged at its lower end, from said bottom, and has an end attachment on the edge of the inwardly folded top flap. A fold line of said strap is positioned directly under the top end attachment, therefore, the strap, having a bottom horizontal part, has also a vertical. main part, the latter being spaced from the vertical side wall member. In the space thus provided, the bottle or angular article fits, and the complete arrangement, the article and the holding members embraced therearound, is swingable be.-
tween a convenient open position and a closed position, in accordance with still other objects of the invention.
In said open position, with the uppermost or cover part held closed, since the arrangement mentioned, of rectangular outline, pivots on the hinge line of the bottom edge portion, it is impossible for said arrangement to swing to the open position, or even to swing or move inwardly,
these features being to secure yet other objects of the invention. 7
With the above indicated objects and advan-. tages in view, and others which will. hereinafter appear, the essential features of the present improvements are herein clearly described, and fully illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in
which: I
Fig. l is an elevational view of a case, in closed position, embodying the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the case in partial open position, some of the parts being closed or swung inwardly;
Fig. 3 is an end elevational View of the device shown in Fig. 2.
Fig. 4: is a fragmentary view, similar to part of Fig. 2, but showing the structure fiatwise; and
Fig. 5 is another view similar to part of Fig. 2, but showing a modification of structure.
In the main embodiment of the invention illustrated, the case includes a body having a bottom or lower side wall 10, rear or back wall II, and a top IE, to which is attached afrontwall section It. To the bottom it is connected another front wall section I l, and on these sections are cooperating members of fastening means, the latter being here shown as snap fasteners l5, 16.
For the purpose of this description, the SEC-.- tions i5, i6 areidentified as front parts, which become uppermost when the device is carried manually, as in traveling, it being seen that a handle or hand grip ii is provided.
The outer surface of the case is formed by a sheeting of leather or the like, with inner reinforcing means, comprising stiffening sheet sections, not shown in the drawing, and a lining covering the whole of the inner face. Hinge lines areprovided as at 38, 39 and fill, the inner stiffening means being there discontinued, and entirely around the edges of the outer and inner sheets is a binding strip it, having holding stitches l9 therein.
A hinge line connects the side of the bottom wall with a swingalole side wall member 2|, and as these side features, with others as specified, are the same both. on the right hand and on the left hand. sides, a description of one is equally applicable to the other.
Extending from the member 2| is a flap 22, there being an interposed hinge line 23, and cooperating with the flap 22, and with the side Wall member, as well as with the edge hinge portion of the bottom I0, is an article holding strap 24.
In the present instance, one end of the strap 2 5 is attached with the stitching 19 of the boundary seam, the associated part of the member 2| being similarly attached. Stitch elements 25 and bindings 26 are, in efiect, continuations of the stitching l9 and binding strip l8, said elements being on the side wall members 2| and their flaps.
The opposite end of the strap 24 is attached to the edge portion of the flap 22 by stitching 21, although this attachment may sometimes be made with the stitches 25, and another feature of the strap 24, which is of suitably stiff leather, or like material, and which may be lined or laminated, is that it has a fold line 28 therein.
On the bottom wall ID are other straps 29, 30, forming loops; as well as a strap 3| on the section l4, and a holding receptacle or pocket 32, on the top l2, all for conventional toilet articles or cosmetic containers.
Releasably, slidably held by the strap 24 is an article or container 33, in the instant case shown as a bottle, the bottom of which is adapted to fit against the closure section l3 to form a compact corner structure. As from the position of the right hand side, Fig. 2, an article 33 may be s1idably removed for use, and replaced.
In the modification shown in Fig. 5, the structure is identical with that of the other figure, except that from the strap part 24 extends a branch 34. This branch may be formed integral with the main strap part 24, and the extremity or otherwise free end thereof finds an attachment on the side wall member 2|, this being in the seam 26, as clearly shown in said Fig. 5.
When the device is moved from the flatwise or resting open position, Fig, 2, as for holding the top l2 and pocket 32 uppermost, the extension 34 ,ofthe strap acts as a bottom support for the container 33, in the relatively swingable organization.
As when in the position shown at the left hand side of Fig. 3, the member 2|, strap 24 and article 33 embraced thereby, form a compact arrangement of rectangular cross section. This arrangement pivots on the line or hinge 20, as for opening, causing the inner edge of the flap 22 to describe an arc of a circle, which rises above the position of the top I2, the latter being shown in broken lines (Fig. 3), but when said top is held closed it is impossible for the arrangement to become displaced, by either outward or inward swinging movement. This is so because the container, which is rectangular, is a rigid structure; since it retains its formation, the side Wall remains vertical to the walls Ill, [2, and no retaining members, as such, are required for the vertical holding function.
Variations may be resorted to within the scope of the invention disclosed and claimed.
What I claim is:
1. An article holding case of the class described comprising a body including a bottom wall, a rear Wall hinged thereto, a top wall hinged to the rear wall, a side closure means comprising another hinged wall; means including front sections for holding said walls in openable closed position; together with an opposite side closure comprising a hinged side member having an angularly disposed fiap thereon, the member and flap being adapted to engage side faces of an elongate article of rectangular cross section; a strap including a main portion having end attachments on the edge of said flap and on the side part of the bottom wall, said portion being adapted to embrace a medial part of the article, and a branch extending from the main portion for engaging one end of the article, said branch having an end attachment on one part of said side member, whereby the article may be drawn directly outwardly over the opposite part of said member.
2. An article holding case of the class described comprising a bottom having hingedly connected therewith rigid members which form one side wall, a back wall, a front wall section, a top wall hinged to the back wall and having another front wall section thereon; together with an oppositely connected side wall member having thereon a flap extension, said members being swingable outwardly into flat open position, said. side wall member adapted to carry an article thereon, and a strap having its opposite ends attached to an edge portion of the flap and to the hinge line of the last mentioned wall, the flap being disposed at right angles to the associated side wall in the closed position of the case, the article being tightly embraced by the strap, whereby said flap may be maintained vertical to the flat members in the open position of the case.
