Description

NITEB STATES PATET IPIPIC.
TIMOTHY C. \YOOD, OF CHARLESTON, MICHIGAN.
GRUBBING-IVIACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent No.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, TIMOTHY C. IVooD, of Charleston, in the county of Kalamazoo and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grubbing-`\Iachines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in the arrangement of the several parts which will be hereinafterl fully described.
In order that those skilled in the art may make and use my invention I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
In the annexed drawings Figure l is a perspective view of the machine. Fig. Q is a side view.
In the figures A, A, represent the two wheels of the machine. B, is the axle on which they are secured.
E, is an elliptical block which is secured to the bottom of the axle, and C, is a lever secured also to the axle-these two are attached as firmly and secured to the axle as though they formed a part of it.
D, is an upright which is hinged to the axle as shown at ac. CZ, d, are chains which are attached to the under side of the lever C, by means of a bolt-to these chains are attached the hooks c, c.
a., is a cord which is secured to the outer extremity of the lever C, at one end. The other end passes up between two pulleys on the upper extremity of the upright D, and then passes down so that power may be applied to it.
In the operation of this machine t-he parts stand in the relative position to each other shown in Fig. l. When I attach it to the 22,047, dated November 9i, 1858.
grub to be extracted, power is applied to the t'ree end of cord a, and the hooks c, c, are then secured to the grub. When the animals begin to move, and pull on cord a, it will be seen that the lever C, must necessarily be elevated to a vertical position and then to a horizontal position as shown in Fig. 2, on the other side of the axle. The grub is drawn over the elliptical block E, and when both lever and upright occupy the horizontal position shown in Fig. 2, it will have been drawn on top of the block, which is then over the axle instead of being under it. If the grub is not entirely extracted by this operation the machine may be driven on, thus pulling out any roots which may remain.
By passing the cord through the top ot support D, I am enabled to apply direct leverage to the lever C, when on an opposite side of the axle from the power, and thus I elevate the grub double the distance that I could were I to attach the cord to the top of the lever, occupying the position that the upright does in Fig. l.
This machine combines simplicity and eficiency in a. remarkable degree, and may be used for extracting small stumps as well as grubs.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The arrangement of the lever C the hinged supporter D, the cord a, the ellipti` cal block E, and hooks c, c, all being secured on the carriage, substantially in the manner and for the purpose herein specified.
TIMOTHY C. VOOD.
